    step 1) person has brlliant idea
    step 2) person shares idea in good spirit
    step 3) M$ has money, develops said idea, gets more money, everyone else is shafted.

    anyone else forsee this tragedy happening?
    what's to prevent M$ or other bastards from hell
    taking an idea and developing it to further their own ends leaving the rest of us shut out because they had the cash the fastest. having no IP is a double edged sword! think about it, where's the motivation for a new company to come in with a new idea if all ideas are free. only those with the most money will win :-( knowledge is power and if you take away that knowledge how will the little guy compete?

How's about any one who's registered here boycotts the comments section til and just looks at the news page for a few weeks/months til this nonsense dies down. I can't decide if I'm in the middle of 'elitest central' or a zerg swarm. sheesh.

    oh yeah and there was that MkLinux thing as well. It ran okay on PCI and NuBus based Macs and was the only Linux choice for PPC macs for a while.
    the people at Apple working on that ar apparently involved in the OS X Server/Darwin project due to thier experince.

    Apple has had and sold AUX then AIX on it's hardware. You can still buy liscense upgrades for them. Years of experience no less. And they produced software that ran in unix and allowed Macs to access X Windows from the Mac OS.
    On top of that, the people in charge of the OS are from NeXT. Think about it.

    big whoop! so what you're really saying is that either you can't finish what you start or you're coding is so bad you couldn't come up with anything worth releasing. you know, if you applied for a job coding they'd want examples of your work, esp. actual programs or projects that can be verified. what do you mean my likes?! I've probably spent more time bleary eyed in front of emacs coding pascal, then c++, then NLP rules than you have just sitting in front of a Mac ever!

    I said virtually the same thing in less words back in the 'favorite UI poll'. let's see how many people respond to your version of the idea :-)
    Personally I really like the Mac OS X Server UI.
    It's the right blend of Mac OS/NeXTStep w/the all that unix goodness underneath. I had to leave Linux for the time being based on my needs and not on my wants so this is potentially a great thing for me because I can access the Mac OS from OS X Server. Freeing up the other computer for Linux tinkering and what not. I had to have a production stable server (ASIP6.1, linux wouldn't cut it), I had to have the Mac OS, so 2 computers. Now I can run 3 OSes on 2 computers w/out rebooting and I'll be happy as can be :-)

    nope, SGI's are are great. Alpha's a great processor. Too bad SGI is going NT. Too bad
    Alpha's may not be around much longer. I cut my teeth using DEC ALPHA servers at college. I 'hated' UNIX back then but I learned to get the most out of it once I reached a certain point.
    I'll still use anyhting that suits my needs the best. I've tried 'em all (BeOS, Linux, Amiga, BSD, etc.) and I still keep coming back to the Mac hardware to run Mac OS and occasionally Linux and Windows(under VPC).

    ..I only have to chose from MkLinux, LinuxxPPC, and YellowDog. Soon Debian and others will also have PPC distros as well for my Mac. WHY?! Either Mac users have a higher percentage of Linux users than PC users do (I wouldn't be suprised) or the Mac market is bigger than people really think. I'm not complaining mind you, it just seems like Apple/Mac users either do something so far advanced it takes years to catch on or they wait for it to become standard on PC's then they overdo it like this USB thing. On a side note, ironic that PC's had USB for years but itlanguished until Apple's iWhack came out :-)
    I know Win98 w/'newimprovedusbsupport' came out at the same time but all those peripherals are iMac schemed, not Win98 schemed if you catch my drift. Anyways. I can't wait til I've got some more cash so I can replace my aging Tower of Power Macs with a G3 Pro and iWhack dumb terminals so I can run my Mac stuff and access the linux server thru Mac X to compile and shit.
    whatever, I'm just rambling, must be the flu.

    Sure, this is supposed to replace Copland which was due out in 1996, BUT, that was the replacement for Pink. Anyone remember that? It was supposed to be the MacOS replacement back in 1992-3! It and Taligent was a IBM/Aple project meant to break the M$ monopoly back then. Short memories!
