...like the Windows variants, Mac OS & Mac OS X Server, and plenty of Unix variants. Generally speaking, scientists have been heavy non-Windows users. I can't explain why they, more than others, would be heavy Mac and Unix users but I do know that a lot of scientific software is predominately Mac and Unix. I don't know if this is a 'chickien or the egg?' thing but the end result is clear; scientists don't use Windows:-)

As is the APSL needs works. As is both ESR and Apple know this and have publicly stated that it will be revised as issues come. Bruce himself acknowledges this. Keep in mind that what you see is APSL 1.0 and that it went thru changes before even being released. Taking a vote on this is probably just academic because everyone involved, ESR, Bruce & Apple all admit that the APSL will change sooner if not later as things are worked out. No point in shooting a moving target unless you want to kill it. Too many people around here apparently want to kill it instead of reforming it:-(
...anonymously tho'. I'm the same Apple list Bruce was on so I cut-n-pasted some email from that list into a submission. I keep all those digests so if anyone wamts to see the relevant ones, feel free to email me. The list sure is quiet now that Bruce is gone. Otoh, while I miss his sane comments I can't express how glad I am that those Debian goons are off the list. What a jerk that Stephen Crowley was. He had nothing productive to add to the list and just emailed out misinformed insults all the time.
OS Matrix SRP Linux $0-headache in 6 seconds flat (just kidding, I had a bad linux week) Mac OS $90-100 Win98 $180-200 WinNT $275-300 Which proprietary OS is cheaper again?! Completely open? I've heard the occasional grumble that bits of Linux are completely open. I'm not sure how that works tho... Many platforms? why, do have all them?! Apple Darwin comes pretty close to completely open source (at least in spirit it does) and all it'll take is porters to get it to different cpu's and that work is done for x86 according to some coders.
Apple IIGS w/separate monitor, computer and keyboard - 1986. that's one full yeay before the Mac II. Besides, you didn't mention the separate keyboard issue so I didn't think it was an issue. Some computer were all 'keyboard' like my old MC-10 and the Commodore 64. I remember the IIGS well because my friend bought one and was playing around with Bill Cosby soundfiles the day I came over and saw it. btw, don't take it personally, I'm smiling and I view this as a fun challenge:-)
Apple didn't steal anything of the sort. Maybe I need to put it simpler for you. Apple had been shipping computers w/out attached monitors for 8 years before the Mac even came along. When the Mac came out they didn't stop making the separate style components of the Apple II series. Oh, and the Mac II came out in 1987, not the early 90's. Apple neither pioneered that a-i-o nor the separate case style as both had been in existence by many manufacturers for years. To imply Apple stole either idea or pioneered either idea is ludicrous!
Apple has always shipped 2 piece units from day one. Just because they initially shipped the Mac as a compact unit means nothing. It had a different purpose, it was supposed to be an information appliance. Show me s single all in one Apple, Apple II or Apple///.
a freakin' iWhack. The original Mac's were supposed to be information appliances and the iMac is just that again. A computer in many ways has the potential to be an appliance. It can play CD's and DVD's, it can tune in the t.v. or radio and of course not only does it make an excellent typewriter it's a good game console as well. This of course ignores all the other possiblities:-) But what if you only have a limited space and limited needs? Hmmmm, that iMac begins to look pretty good and the first two versions were pretty expandable. Too bad they dumbed 'em down even further:-( Working at a reseller I can get an iMac for a good price and with those things getting faster and faster every day my older slower workstation sure could use a little less load that the iMac can handle. What's more, in my case I'll stick it in the diningroom / kitchen right where the phone line is. That way all info in and out of the house is centrally located on one dedicated machine and my wife can use her cooking/shopping software w/out having to walk across the house to her current pc. I'm sure we can find other jobs to push off onto it as well:-) like maybe some X-10 duties or something...
I added Matrix to my favorites list. It has just the right amount of details to enable suspension of disbelief. The fight scenes had some good moments I've not seen even in a Jackie movie and the special effects were rather good. The characters were also well acted and you got a feel for their personalities right away. Keanu's slightly deadpan style acting was perfect for the character he played.

I can just picture some guy sitting there w/out a clue in the world thinkin' he's doin' his job moderatin' the hell out of the responses:-) It's AFD fer cryin' out loud and we're responding to a joke! Hellooooh! Rob, you're complainin' to us but yer own moderators can't even let loose a little I guess:->
...computers have been around since before many of you were born. It's a rare job that doesn't involve using one these days. Computers have more or less been forced on people. Did it ever dawn on you people that some people only want to write letters, and email and such?! Did it ever dawn on you people that some people -omigosh- don't like computers!? Yet they are forced by our current society to have have them to get along or compete. Yes, some people even resent computers!! What does this mean to all you people here? Your plans of world domination are for naught because M$ makes things just easy enough to use that most people can get done what they want w/out really learning anything. M$ and Apple make better appliances. Linux is not nor can it ever be an 'appliance'. That is it's strength and also it's weakness.
My score is set to 1 so I don't have to see the a.c.'s comments. However, if I posted something and an a.c. responds it might be nice to see it just out of curiousity. Then again, unless a moderator raises it to 1 maybe you don't want to see it:-> hmmm, maybe better a mod raises it rather than risk raising your blood pressure:-) never mind...
...if you view it from a numbers p.o.v. Linus said recently that like 7->8.5 Linux users were out there. That's more than some OSes and for comparison when you consider that companies like Apple say there's 25 million Macs in use right now and M$ say theres 50 Million win98 users that 7 million is a respectable number! I'd bet it's higher. Right now I account for 5 os those 25 million Macs and only three of them run the Mac OS. Heck, even one of the ones that does I still use to log into the linux box with and run PowerMach on so that's more 1/2:-) Pretty soon I'll have OS X Server to play with and only 1/5 of my macs will have the Mac OS, my wife's! There's no way she's accepting anythng but Mac OS because all her very expensive music software and equipment runs on it:-) She'd kill me! I know I'm not the typical Mac user but there's a significant number of Mac users with alternate OSes out there.
...I was just going on what my Amiga using friends have told me:-) I never owned one and altho' I used one frequently I never got involved in the politics of being an Amiga user. I did simplify the whole deal I admit but there always is that FUD floating around and the general public hears the FUD w/o hearing the evangelism most of the time. I've been a multi-OS user for years. I've lived through and almost succumbed to the FUD at one point. I was that close to buying and HP windoze machine when Linux for the Mac became more than buggy junk and Apple became a revived company. I'm happy with my dual setup of Mac OS and Linux, it works out perfectly for me. I'm also happily awating my NFR of OS X Server so I can give that the try out:-)
FUD killed Atari, Amiga, Apple (almost) and other M$ competitors (Caldera, Be,Inc 'anyunixvendor' etc) will never be the same. Remeber back in the 80' and early 90's when you had many mainstream OS's to choose from? sigh oh well, eve tho' I'm forced to do windoze at work I can go back to some freedom of choice at home:-)

I decry your disparaging take on what it means to be a weasel. Weasels never did anyharm to anyone. In fact, they're good for the general well being. Well, unless you're a snake or or a hare in which case your s.o.l. I guess:->
