    Read A Mote In God's Eye someday. It's one of the best first contact novels. And The Gripping Hand, it's sequel, is equally good. Lucifers' Hammer has not aged well, however.

    And, as we all know, Bush and Gore were the same, thus Gore would have appointed the same sort of people as Bush. Ashcroft, the Watt protege at Interior, etc. A vote for Nader was a vote against the environment and freedom.

    The original C compiler had a backdoor. (someone find the link to the story and post below, please). Basically, the compiler knew when it was compiling login.c and inserted the backdoor. The good part was that the compiler recognized when it was compiling the compiler and inserted the backdoor creation code into the re-compiler compiler. The only way to find it was to dis-assemble the compiler and codewalk the result.

    Using it as a tape backup system for a PC? At 15-20 per tape with 75 GB it's certainly competitive with the other systems out there. Of course, you would only need it if you back up 75GB.
