I'm a Ham operator (KC8DDC), and I think your claim that morse code (BTW, we call it CW) is destined to become a lost art, and that the only reason its still in use is because of the licencing requirement, is way offbase.

Even if the CW requirement were to completely dissapper, CW itself will not disapper anytime in the forseeable future. There are situtations where, right now, CW is the only viable communactions mode (one example is adverse conditions such as severe interferance, and weak signals). Also, many hams use it for contesting and DXing, and there are hams who use it as thier primary communcations mode because they enjoy using it.

Rest assured, despite what the pro-code lobby says, CW is not going away anytime soon. :)

You results will very, but my vision was inproved greatly from 20/2000 before the surgry, to initaly 20/120 afterwards. After my eyes had a chance to adjust, my vision latter inproved to 20/60 in the left eye, and near 20/20 in the right eye. However, there are risks, and the surgry is not for everyone.

I have some advice that may save you some surprises and posiable problems down the road:

I recommend that you get the surgery done at the Vision Surgery & Laser Center in La Hoya, California if you can make the trip, since, IMO, they have the most experience. Wherever you chose to get it done, make sure you find out how many eyes they've done to date. The places that have most experanced doctors are the places that have done the most eyes. There is a big diffrence between the experance level of a doctor who has done a dozen eyes, and a doctor who has done a couple thousand, and you'll want the doctor who has the most experance.

If you are going out-of-state to have the surgry, then, if you can, plan to arrive at least 2 days before the surgery is scheduled to be done. This will give you enough time to get settled in and adjust to any time zone changes before having to deal with the surgery. Also, plan to stay at least 2 or 3 days after the surgery to recover before going home. Trust me, you're not going to be able to see well enough to do any traveling initailly after the surgry. You'll need to stay overnight after the surgery, anyways, because they'll need to check your eyes the next day.

After the surgery, you will experience poor vision, and that may last for a few days. It would be a good idea to have someone give you a ride back afterward. Also, you might not want to do any reading or computer work for a few days afterward.

Your eyes will be sensitive to light for at least a couple of days after the surgery. If your going to be staying at a hotel afterwards, your better off IMO staying in one that caters to business travelers (ex. has room darkening curtains, has a shuttle service, ect.).

Finally, they'll give you a kit that includes, among other things, a couple of eyeshelds and some moisturizing and medicating drops. Be sure to follow the doctor's instructions for the medications they'll give you. Also, be sure to allow enough time between each set of drops to give the eye drops enough time to work befor you put the other set of drops in. You'll need to stop by a pharmacy after they give you your kit, they'll give you some prescriptions that you'll need to fill, and the small bottle of moisturizing drops they give you is only intended to last for 2-3 days (you'll need them for months). Also, you'll need to wear the eyeshilds for a week, when you go to sleep, to protect your eyes. Don't be in a hurry when you take them off, the tape they give you loves skin, you'll have to literally peel the tape off your face.

Hope this bit of advice helps, and good luck on yopur eye surgry.

I've been reading some of the comments here, and I wanted to share some things I know about flourescent lights.

Flourescent lights are not supposed to buzz, hum or flicker. If you have a noisy or flickering light, the bulbs may be starting to wear out, and will need to be replaced. Other common causes are a bad starter (for a starter-type light), loose wiring, a bad connection between the bulb and lamp holder, or the balast is going bad. Also, a bad ground can cause any number of problems.

As another poster mentioned, older flourlescent lamps used a magnetic balast ( esscently a transformor) while newer ones use an electronic balast (usially a switching power supply with some extra circuitry). If the fixtures in your office are more than a few years old, it may be a good idea to replace them.

Another problem is water dissapation. There needs to be a certain amount of water in the tank for the toilet to flush properly, or you going to end up with a toilet that clogs frequently, and gives you all sorts of other problems. Older toilets may have enought room, but, unless your system is really small (think embedded system), the newer low-flow toilets do not.

If you're going to do this, please be careful. If you're going to power it from the AC (not recomended unless you really know what you're doing), make sure that the line is isolatted, and is protected by a GFCI. Don't count on the power supply to provide isolattion, a liner PS might if it uses a transformor (no ganunaties), but a switching PS won't, and most computer PS'es are switching PS'es. (1) Offer to buy him a "low pass filter" - anyone who works at a radio equipment store will know exactly what you mean if you ask them for one. it may cost as much as $20, more if he's running a heck of a lot of power out the back of his radio. he puts this in-line on his coax before it reaches the antenna. I would not recommend going to RadioShack for this. Try looking through the yellow pages for a business that sells or leases business radio or ham equipment. A low-pass filter tries to clean out the ranges of transmission that will interfere with A/V equipment. It shouldn't interfere with his fun.

    (3) Buy some high-pass filters to put on your tv and stereo to filter out his transmissions. This might not work, if, like you say, anything with a speaker repeats his voice.

Here are a few other ideas:

    * Buy a package, or two, of 0.01 uF bypass capactors, and connect them across the speaker treminals. The bypass capactors act as a short circuit to RF, but won't do anything to power and audio.

    * Try putting an AC line filter between the device being affected, and the AC line. It is possabile that the interferance could be comming in through the AC wiring.

    * Switch to shielded cable, if you have that option(some manufactures mold the cable pernamently to thier speakers). This will make a big differance(it will cut down on alot of crosstalk, and other interferance), and you really should use shielded cable on your audio/vidio, speaker, data, and antenana(RF) conections anyways.

BTW, one inportaint FYI: ham radio operators can legealy operate radio equment that they've built or modified without having that equiptment type-accepted, as long as it's for personal use. For expample, If a ham builds his own radio, or modifies his radio, and he's useing it for his own use, his doesn't have to get it type-accepted. If he's building or modifing radio equiptment comericially, however, he still needs to get that equiptment type-accepted for it to be legal.
