... after the whole series will be that Linux does not save money for an average company. This first part gives a major point why a company won't save money. Another major point, I think, will be the time spent in helping users using Linux. The average company will have employees who are used to Windows and they will thus need help to get on track using Linux regulary. This time will probably cost a company much more than the licenses for the applications needed if they ran Windows. Another point I see coming up is the time for installing software. I'm a very experienced Linux user, and a less so Windows user, but I'm finding it quite alot easier to install software on a Windows system. And then I'm not talking simple software such as firefox, I'm talking complicated applications such as j2ee application servers (for sandbox development), advanced IDEs and so on.
I am pretty sure it at least decreases the amount sold to minors. If something is not as easily accessible, people who do not want it bad enough don't go through the hassle to get it in other ways. At least that has been the case for me and many of my friends in the days we were minors.
The things you mention which are doable (transactions, subqueries) require significant rewrites to port an app to or from MySQL.
The only thing you need to do is change a line in the config file and specify the table type when creating the tables. I don't call that a significant rewrite to be honest. A simple search and replace would do it.
Probably some truth in that I'd say. I still have trouble understanding why people can't just use their better judgement (well, when they conduct in illegal activities they've already failed maybe:). It just doesn't make sense to me to continue harvest those rewards when _know_ you'll eventually loose it all. I'll have to work my brain a bit on this one I guess:)
... why people never stop their illegal activities when they've earned enough money? I mean, $5,000,000 should be enough for anyone for quite a while? It seems that they'll eventually get caugh otherwise and don't have any real use of the money anyways, like in this case...
Come on, writing "DON'T GO HERE!!!" before a link is almost worse than writing "Don't push this button" above a big red button in a kindergarten. I know I _will_ click that link soon. Argh! must... resist...:)
Yes, but it's big. And can't handle much shaking at all. The big pros with an mp3 player is it's small in size and that it can take quite a beating without the sound getting jumpy.

I'd classify that as a stupid trick. Come on, sounding like something the animals want to kill doesn't seem clever at all methinks:).
The article doesn't say that you really need the consent of the user. You only need to provide an option on the website, which when chosen stops the site from using cookies.
So you do not really need to ask the user if he wants to use cookies or not (as the/. article says), you just need to provide an option (on the website) to turn them off. And, as stated, you need to provide information about what the cookies will be used for.
How do they make the movie "expire" so you can't watch it after a certain amount of days? Sounds to me like some problems could arise, with cracks etc? I can't look at Movielink's page since I'm outside the US, it just shows me the message that it's only available to US citizens:/. So I can't find the information there.
I can imagine that this is not a very smart thing to do. It would likely make things worse. If you reply to spam, it proves that you have looked at it, and thus are a good victim and they are likely to spam you more. Just at thought.

I think too that good mathematicans very often make good programmers and the other way around. The problem I see with Dijkstra's statement is that he says (as I understand it) that poor mathematicans would do better pure mathematicans than they they would do programmers. However you see it, there is more mathematics in pure mathematics than there is in programming. And thus if you have other qualities needed in programming, but you are not very good at maths, you would make a better programmer than pure mathematican (though maybe not a very good one at either). I hope that makes my point a bit clearer.
"Programming is one of the most difficult branches of applied mathematics; the poorer mathematicians had better remain pure mathematicians."
I do not agree with this. I mean, in pure mathematics there are not much to think about besides mathematics. Programming includes many other aspects, for example creativity. So if you are a poor mathematican but have other qualities that are needed for programming, you would have an easier time doing programming than pure mathemtaics I think.
Well, I'd say that a desktop will still allways have better cooling and thus will be able to run faster. I mean, if you can fit a water cooling system in a laptop, you can fit a larger one in a desktop. So I do not see this as a reason that desktops would disappear. Besides, they will be cheaper for a long time still since you don't need to make everything as small as possible. I could probably come up with tons of arguments why desktops will not disappear in the near future to be honest:).

My two cents

A problem, potentially delaying release? Seems that they don't really know what causes it as of yet...

Not really, they state that it could be a hybrid of a gorilla and a chimp, if that is the case, the hybrid could have been quite newly "created".

Actually, it isn't. You are not allowed to fall asleep when meditating.
