    Because it's not open source.

    Seriously though, that's a very valid question. Aside from the fact that it's not GPL'd, it has a) better development tools, b) more libraries out there for the picking, c) better real live commercial support and d) you can use it for free.

    I personally ditched PHP several months ago and aimed squarely at Java. God knows it looks better on a resume...

    there was better PostgreSQL support out there. While MySQL is *ok*, PostgrsSQL beats the tar out of it. It supports good old standard SQL syntax, while I have to go look up functions in MySQL. Of course, everything supports MySQL, but it's tough to find apps that support PGSQL. Regardless, my current development platform of choice is JAVA/J2EE + PostgreSQL. That's what I coded Squabble in. I just wish there was more Open Source stuff out there for Java related stuff...

    While I'm of course not a lawyer, but what right does this organization have to come in and put anything on the computers that are privately owned? I think they are trying to make you THINK that they have right and you'll give them the go ahead because they've convinced you they do... while in reality you could tell them to go to hell and they couldn't do a thing about it.

    I assume people are worried about being tracked... But the only places I could think of needing to use it are when you are either a) getting on an air plane or b) entering a government building. honestly, considering how often people attack those 2 places, i think the national id card is a pretty damned good idea.

    I've never complained about content on Slashdot before, with the exception of Jon Katz' drivel.

    But this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. No, data can not be constructed from watching the LED's. Who's the marketing genius who came up with this idea? The only things that could be told:

    1) You are connected.
    2) You are sending data (maybe)
    3) You are receiving data (maybe)

    Does anybody really think that those little blinky lights are going fast enough to transmit any data? If so, are you on crack!? The only thing data that isn't transmitted too fast is like a 300 baud modem. And I certainly hope nobody's using that anymore. Somebody probably wrote this crap up so they could get marks on a performance review or something.

    Soembody needs to have a bag of STFU and stop posting this ignorant imbecility.

    While ESR seems to be very zealous and into the (GNU)/Linux scene, he's it's worst enemy. While Microsoft may spread FUD, people look at this guy and "wtf is this idiot doing? what's he talking about?" if i didn't know better, i'd avoid linux for the sole reason i wouldn't want to be associated with that nut.

    well that doesn't take into account of gravity.

    for instance, while the sun takes up 1414397073539882700 KM, the effect of it's gravity, which (for the purpose of this example) goes all the way out to pluto, effects 880568861396154242060686347361 KM of space. that 622575426568 times the amount of space the sun actually takes up.

    so uh, it's likely nothing would bump into anything else, there probably would be some detrimental effects due to stuff running into other stuffs gravity well...

    Yeah, watchig the mailing list, it does show Richard Morrell to be an ego-maniacal jackass. no, he doesn't like it when you don't pay for this stuff, and he tends to not have a great attitude.

    on the other hand, it *is* a free product, and there are a lot of other people on the list/irc who WILL help you, so if you can get over him, you'll be ok.

    the point about "don't run the CGI's as root" is moot. the web interface is only accessible to the "green" or local interface. the user has to take several steps to open that up to the outside world. if you're worried about the script kiddies rootin' ya, don't open it up. and if you're worried about the people on the local network, you got bigger problems to worry about :)
