I think you miss the point. It's not Joe Consumer that can boycott any particular product. Texas Instruments out sources engineering work to India. Who is going to find all the products that contains a TI designed chip that was in part or in whole designed in India? What products to we boycott when a Pepsico outsources its accounting, or new product development? Most large corporations and now even smaller ones are doing some kind of outsourcing of work.

I too have worked with less experienced engineers based in India, but keep two things in mind:

    1) Within a few years engineers with one or two years of experience today will be hitting the sweet spot of 5-7 years experience and cost less than a new grad in the US.

    2) There is plenty of discussion about the flight of Indian engineering talent home because of the slumping high tech industry here.

Geek! I design chips for a living. If I can't communicate and motivate (oh... social skills) I'd never get one design out the door. Technology changes... (two years ago Java, today ????). We have to learn to learn, to communicate, to teach... all social interaction skills. For most of us, Einstein, Hawking, Gates... great dreams but we're not them. What about Ford, Edison, etc. Those men had as much impact on the world, they understood the social component to life.

A standard for what? Verilog is a standard. 85% percent of the chips designed today are described in Verilog.

Verilog is to C as VHDL is to C++. You can easily hang yourself in C just as you can in Verilog. VHDL is heavily typed and object oriented, so you have to write more code but the compiler will pervent you from doing bad things.

The answer to the question of Verilog vs VHDL for FPGAs is what tools do you have. You can describe the design in C using SystemC or C-Level. But it comes down to what code your FPGA tool can swallow. Remember, you have to map your design to the logic found in the FPGA so you need library support for the FPGA with any language you select.

If you have the budget, look at VisualHDL (Innoveda). It let's you graphically capture your design and it produces Verilog or VHDL as it output.

Isn't this a two way street. We have to stop using MS products and start using other programs in order to develop a market that companies will be attracted to. And yes, we also need the kill apps that will dethrone MS. We have to keep in mind that a company with $36 billion in cash reserves and that has used unethical (not necessarily illegal) methods to capture market share needs to be fought on other than the technological front. History teaches us that the best technology does NOT rise to the top (Intel, MS, etc... vs Motorola, Digital Research, etc.). We believe that capitalism works. It works when everyone plays fair. When was the last time you saw anyone play fair in any market in the last two decades in this country.

A rather simple-minded view of things. How many times have you received and accepted one of those great credit card offers when you know that a credit line of $5000 is more than you can pay back. We have done that around the world though organizations like the World Bank. We are wealthy and we have screwed with enough countries so that we can be a little generious. The more markets we create by allowing countries to climb out of their debt, the better our economic future will be. We don't have to let the debt go without some strings attached, but at the very least we should consider the broader implications of keeping these countries down when we first offered them an opportunity to sink into debt.

I have to agree! I participated with a team from Fort Collins, CO and the most important goal for the engineers was to let the students do as much as possible. We, those engineers that participated, all agreed that the students would conceptualize and build the machine and that we engineers, would help where ever we could. I actually felt sorry for those teams that were dominated by the engineers who thought they were creating the next generation of engineers but instead made sheep. To lead means clear the path that others can be great. I hope the students of Fort Collins High School read this and know that I wish them great luck and that the future is theirs to create.

Oops, I guess you're not an engineer. This program is not designed to create new researchers in the robotics areana, but to inspire students to enter the engineering field. Deadlines, the use of existing materials and technology, and restrictions on what can be done is at the heart of engineering. We, engineers, seek practical solutions to problems using actual parts. Yes it would be great if we could get high school students to invent the next generation technology but we have to remember what the goal of the program is: to inspire the next generation of engineers. If you would simply donate your time to inspire the next generation you would discover that the challenge is great. Tell me how you create interest in creation of new technology with the next generation, otherwise blah, blah blah.

This program requires lots of work, but the rewards are great.

Another option is to get students building robots using the Legos MindStorm ($200). There are competitions (even at the college level).

Good Luck. The generation of engineers that will be working 10 years from today needs to be developed and encouraged now.
