I hope moderators get this moderated up to a 5. This is importanant stuff. I particularly think it's important to read the last paragraph about the charges for the boxed version. This is why I have no problems what-so-ever paying for SuSE (although I'll admit I only buy about once a year now).
I'm a little biased towards SuSE. It's a nice distro and I'm impressed with what they have done and are doing for the Linux community. However, my preference of SuSE has nothing to do with what I'm going to say now. Shut up and get a clue! Sweet Lord, I can't believe all the mindless drivel flowing on this discussion. SuSE is not going tits-up. So what if they trim some fat in the states. Just because they aren't strong here, doesn't mean they are dead. My friend and co-worker (who has used SuSE for a long time) used to be classified as a distributor a few years back. He receieved free updates from SuSE in the mail because they had no distribution here. Even if they closed up all offices, and did business from Germany only, I'm sure they'll keep an English distro going.
Just pan and scan this forum to see what I'm talking about. People assuming this means that the 7.1 release isn't coming (which ships 2/12). Going tits-up. Proves they weren't a player or shit like that. Blah Blah! I think most people here post for the thrill of it. Karma whoring? I don't give a fuck about/. karma. I'd rather not have posted this at all, but it's just so damned pathetic.
So, rather than just being another post that says "Oh, so sorry" to SuSE. Let me say, congratulations on their upcoming release with the new 2.4 kernel. Let me also thank them for their development work on the ATA-100 development for UDMA EIDE hard drives. A tip of the hat should go to them for being IBMs distro of choice on the S/390s. And finally, it's good to see AMD working with SuSE on porting Linux to Sledgehammer.
Yeah, but Dell is taking those parts and building something from them. Amazon simply re-routes the finished product to you. Very efficient if they can constantly receive products quickly at a time. After all, it costs money for warehouse space. It costs money to hire people to manage the warehouses.
I thought the guys write up was good. I really didn't understand how Amazon worked. I don't buy from them anymore since they patented "One-Click" Bullshit. However, I think this begs the question, why don't distributors, retailers, and manufacturers sell themselves? Why sell to Amazon if you aren't getting good money from it? Probably because if you don't, someone else will. I look forward to the day that manufacturers start selling more directly to the public at lower prices. May not happen, but I'll hope.
Akira isn't for everyone. I love most Anime. I watched Akira for the first time two weeks ago and I was quite disappointed. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be. It is a very weird story. To me Kaneda wasn't even the main character. Tetsuo (sp? pron?) was more the focus of the movie. But to have a movie focusing on this guy rapidly evolving into some higher form that will basically wipe out the city/country... it just didn't seem that great. I suppose if you like pain and suffering then you'll like the movie. Lot's of people die... without point. Yeah, I know... that's how a lot of Anime is. I guess I'd just recommend renting this before you buy it. You may be disappointed.
Fan Films that are not parodies however are in violation of IP law.
How do you define a parody though? Some things are blatantly obvious parodies. Troops is obviously a parody. Yet, it's serious (instead of slapstick). Can anyone give a good example of what would be a violation of IP law that isn't a parody?
I've been thinking about my original post. I think now that the suspension was indeed uncalled for. I just find it disturbing that so many people find his actions to be justified. This was a high school and such actions aren't as consequential as they may be in the working world for an adult. Young adults need to learn that some actions have consequences. I myself was the object of ridicule by many of my classmates in high school. Ridicule so bad that I broke down in tears once my junior year in science class. It just got to me that bad. I didn't fit in with most. No girl wanted to dance with me, so I didn't go to dances (like homecoming). I didn't have anything in common with those that were "royalty" for such events. So, I missed out on homecoming, prom, and other school events. It hurt inside. But, I kept my eye on the goal. The goal was to make something good of my life. There is a big world waiting after high school. (I hope any students reading this take this to heart.) My junior year I applied to go to work for a senior year internship at one of the local science/engineering companies. Out of 150 or so students from schools all over the area, only 56 were chosen for jobs. I was one of them. This did wonders for my confidence. So, while my classmates were enjoying their senior year by slacking off, partying, and whatever, I was going to work 5 days a week from 12:30 to 4:30 for engineers that gave me things like research projects to assist them. Lots of go-fer work to, but for a 17 year-old it's pretty cool hopping in a government car and cruising a Dept. of Energy site running errands for engineers. Beats flipping burgers. I didn't have the luxury of acting like your typical high schooler. I didn't want it either. I genuinely helped engineers and was appreciated. I had to be responsible and professional at a young age. And what a difference it made. Even then I'd look back at some of the people that were popular in my class. They were the center of the stage. I knew it didn't matter in 9 months when we graduated. For years after high school I'd see classmates. Some did well. Many were not doing so well. Pregnancies, no further education (thus low paying jobs), and even criminals. My way of fighting back for being picked on was to make something of myself. So, when those guys saw me and asked what I was doing these days. I'm damn proud to say I'm a software engineer and doing just fine.
What I'm getting at with all this. I absolutely believe that he had the right to make that statement in his own way. I hope he had more good impact than bad. (Good meaning his point.) His statement may have been totally misunderstood. And to me, that was a waste. I'd like to see a lot change in schools. I'd like to see many misconceptions about those that are "different" and "don't quite fit in" with the normal crowd. Actually I believe there isn't a normal crowd, but kids try and adapt to their surroundings so they aren't different. Many people that joined in and picked on me did it so they weren't picked on themselves. But, I think many kids try way too hard to be so different that they take it to extremes. They want to have confrontation. They want to make a statement. They feel they have to rebel. And sometimes there isn't really anything to rebel against. Got a point to make? Put it in writing. Send it to the newspaper. Distribute fliers. Want to show the world that "geeks", "goths", or "quake players" aren't so bad. Do something for your community. Get noticed for doing positive things. Maybe piercing your tongue isn't going to get the message out that you want to be accepted for who you are. You send message your way that but they don't perceive it the same way. I just see so much anger and bitterness being expressed by people here on the posts. I think that today's geeks in their teens and twenties are amazingly intelligent in some areas, yet so blind in others. They tend to look at religions, politics, and those in the older generation (parents, bosses, teachers, etc.) as being sheep. Just following the norm. Well, we're sheep too. Black sheep, but sheep none-the-less and we're flocking together. You can live in the system, and still strive to better it. You can disagree with what is the status quo for the way you should be, but still should understand why it's that way. You may find that some of the ideas and beliefs of the older generation aren't so primitive and closed minded. Just because you are smart, doesn't mean you know it all. I know I've rambled on and on about this. Sorry. I just want to see people start taking care of themselves better and then start taking care of each other.
Yeah, go ahead and flame me. But, everyone including Katz is supportive of what he did. So am I a little. However, the article (which I can't get back to now for some reason) said that he had ample time to step down before hand. Each person could've declined nomination before hand. Ok, yeah he didn't think he'd win. But, he had this planned if he did. It was disruptive. Granted, I myself think homecoming is worthy of being disrupted, but you have to pay the price for actions. If the price is a two day suspension, then so be it. He wanted to make a statement. He did. I think he did it wrong. Oh sure, more attention is definately brought to this means of statement. But, was the point delievered? Did people understand? Or did they just think that this was yet another misguided youth with a bad attitude? I'm not disagreeing with what he did. I'm just trying to say that some methods don't work as well as others.
I guess what I'm thinking is that he was deceptive. I think honesty and integrity are important. He should have backed down from nomination and been honest about it then.
I will say that I do feel that his suspension should be off the record and that it should not be held against his work at school. (Make up tests, turn in assignements, etc.) But, perhaps a better form of disciplinary reaction would be to required him to compose an essay/report of why he did that. Instead of just throwing him out of school, find out why he did what he did. Just my $0.02
I know the parent is funny, but lets keep things in perspective. In the realm of 3D graphics cards (the kind mostly used for games), most cards that you'd want to invest in are still about $250 and up. I say invest, because I do not like buying a new card more than every 18 months. Yet, with the onslaught of new and improved hardware at a breakneck pace, cards are getting cheaper before they are antiquated. (Thank God! My bank account may yet survive!) Now, I only payed $125 for my OEM Voodoo3 3000 when it first was released. Our clan bought a box of 20 cards, so we got a price break. But, at that time, new off-the-shelf V3's were $175. This was top-o-the-line then. (They were for about a month when first released.) And before that I paid (ouch... hurts to think about it) $300 for my V2 12MB card when it was brand new.
So I think $150 is cheap for a card that is on par with today's technology. I think $300 for top of the line is adequate too. You get what you pay for. That $500 for the GeForce2 Ultra is getting what you pay for. Granted, I think I will wait till January so I get it for less.
I'd have to agree there. It's hard to look at something seriously when such descriptors are used. Granted, I myself think in terms of "that rocks", "it kicks ass", "this is the bomb", or the like. But, I would not be using such terminology in anyway that supported such a (supposedly) serious project. And when you start claiming to have something better than Java, which is becoming more and more established, you'd best be backing this up with professionalism.
I'm with you... I bought 6.3. I would like to get the 7.0 pro version. It's got all the stuff I want on it. But I'm kind of broke right now. Thought I'd do an install over the internet. Anxiously awaiting the FTP sites to carry the files. What gives SuSE? I'll buy the damn thing, but prove to us you are a real Linux distro and give it away.
Ummmmmm, you deep linked to his essay. You are denying him the right to spam (good or bad) us with things we don't want to see. Just trying to make a simple point.
I really don't care if I come off like a flamer, but what planet are you from? If you haven't noticed, most articles posted on Slashdot have both the root web address for the site and the address for the article. Quite frankly, I don't want to always surf through crap to find what I'm looking for. Most don't. Besides, sites that are updating news and content often change their entry pages. So, this Carmack interview may be hard to locate in three days.
Also, many sites on the web over do the banners and revunue stream thing anyway. It's like, click next page 10 times for something that could fit on one page. I click the printer friendly formats whenever possible just to skip the crap. Banners and gifs and crap on the top, bottom, left and right. You readers know what I'm talking about.
This is lame anyway. Permission? They posted it. It's the web. We don't stand for that crap. Some stupid judge in New York may call linking wrong, but we don't. By the way, the search engines are stealing their content too if you apply the same logic.
What's the point of 50-60 FPS when broadcast video is ~30? Are we itching for a higher frame rate in movies and TV?
You don't play Quake3 (or any other FPS) do you? Because if you did, you'd know that you really want as many frames/sec as possible. Dipping down to 20 frames/sec in a firefight almost always insures you a rocket to the face. Don't post in ignorance.
Thanks for this bit of information... I stopped and thought about what it is I eat daily. Have you heard the Galactic Cowboys song titled "Kill Floor?" It's about a guy who works in a slaughter house. I thought of that when reading your post. They really blast Death Metal in the slaughter house? Why? Is it to instill a more trance-like state of mind so that you can focus on the job and kill? Or is it that they actuall like it and find it enhances the feeling of the job? It's something to think about. Got me thinking.
No it was not a troll. (Yeah, I did post it very early in the morning when I should've been sleeping, but not to troll.) Considering the lack of interest in this article overall (currently half of the 98 comments are score 0 or less) and the state of the discussion while new on the board (a bunch of A.C. trolling and flamebaiting) I thought I'd try and get a discussion going. Honestly the original article was very "ho-hum" boring. Sure, it was news that pertains to geeks, but sometimes geek news is boring.
Maybe you know everything, but I don't. I thank those that bothered to post decent replies. I actually learned some good things about BSD and am now going to take a closer look at it as an option for a good server OS for a business idea I'm developing. Hopefully others learned some stuff as well. Hopefully one day I'll be as 31337 as some of you are. Until then, I guess I'll just have to "Troll" for information.
I honestly do not know that much about BSD. I have heard many good things about it and understand that it has been around for quite some time. I've seen the issue raised several times of "Linux Vs. BSD" and that this battle of the systems is somewhat of a holy war amongst the free OS community. It seems that so much effort is being thrown into Linux that too me it would make sense that Linux will emerge on top eventually by the sheer development/advancement effort thrown into it. Is BSD really needed? How much longer will it be around? Does Linux really need more "competition" besides trying to compete against the Redmond giant? Just a thought on my mind. It's late and so far a bunch of junk has been posted. So, thought I'd throw out something with more substance.
Now, does the Slashdot crew need to update the faq for the new readers from India that explains how Slashdot karma works? On the other hand, it would be fun to imply that bad posts may result in being continuously reincarnated as spam messages for all eternity.
So are you saying I'm a problem? I usually moderate well. I somehow made a simple mistake in a moderation and was wanting to post an A.C. reply to the improperly moderated post explaining that it was wrong hoping that someone would mod it back down. And then by not posting A.C. (in a hurry and didn't check the box) it cleared out all my other moderations. All I was trying to do was the right thing and it back fired on me. I do not approve of such articles that are meant to be slanderous in anyway. Especially those that are just plain Troll or Flamebait. I try to post quality to this board and moderate such. So, I'm not sure what was meant by the comment, but for the record, I'm not the problem. I just made a stupid mistake.
I did not mean to mod this as funny. I picked troll for a -1. I don't know what happened. May my karma forgive me. And would somebody at/. ban this jerk.
I'm really getting sick of all this crap. Really I am. You are all posting like the foolish 16 to 18 year olds I LAN party with (I'm 26 myself). What am I talking about you ask?
"3DFX is dead! Long live nVidia!" "3DFX was once good." "3DFX sux!" etc...
I myself have bought 3DFX cards only in the past. I bought my Voodoo2 12MB for $300 just two years and three months ago the first week it was out. I bought my Voodoo3 3000 OEM just over a year ago for $125. I got that great price as part of a 20 pack that my friends all chipped in to order. Rember those were $175 and up when they were brand new, so $125 was a great deal. Just how often should you have to upgrade your freakin' graphics card? I cringe at once a year but I love games and want performance. I look at nVidia and see that they have this "aggressive" release schedule to try and get a new product out every 6 months. BFD!!! Who can afford that crap? Not many. You'll have to skip a generation or two between your upgrades. Then what. You suck, right? Because you don't have the very best card available you must suck. You don't think so? Sure you do.
Now I'm not saying that nVidia doesn't have a great card now. They do. But my Voodoo3 3000 is still a kick-ass card. It looks beautiful to me. Of course I don't get 120fps, but I like some eye candy. And speaking of eye-candy... yeah I know it's Glide... but... I've seen Unreal Tournament on a GeForce that had to run D3D. It looks like SHIT!!! I'll take my proprietary Glide over that crap anyday for Unreal Tournament.
Another thing that bugs me is that everything seems to revolve around the innovations of nVidia. I'm sorry, but last I checked 3DFX had some pretty serious new features. Oh, wait! That's more of that eye candy that prevents us from getting 600fps. And the nVidia has T&L. 3DFX doesn't. So... they said they didn't think it was that big of a deal. That's D3D thing if I remember correct. And you all dis on 3DFX for not being as OpenGL friendly as they should be. Then why even accept D3D as an option. D3D looks like shit. Back to the new features. I think that I'd like to see newer things added in like motion blur, focus on what's in view, soft reflections, etc. What's wrong with trying to be more cinematic in games? I'm not saying that these new features will be as good as they hope they'll be (games will have to incorporate them I think), but it's a goal. These guys I play Q3 with turn off all the eye candy on their GForce cards to get more fps. Looks like Q1 now. Funny.
And to all of you that think that nVidia is king of the hill and should crush the others, then get ready for lack of innovation and high prices. Competition is needed everywhere. Shall we get rid of AMD and just have Intel? And those damn long distance providers... let's just go back to AT&T. No, not at all... you need to be hoping that companies stay in place and keep trying to one-up each other.
And quit rooting for a damn card manufacturer like it's a commercial sports team! It's sick! It's pathetic! Go Broncos! Seattle Sucks! Indians Rule! Go Green Bay! I hate sports. I'm not playing. It makes no difference to me who beat who. I think that those who root for teams (especially those 1500 miles away) think they are part of the team or something. "We" won the game? Who the fuck is "we"? They won, not you. Same goes for graphics cards. So you've got a GeForce and nVidia is on top. What does that make you? King of the video card industry? Part of the team? Step off, fool!
The bottom line for me is a wait and see. I'll save my money for a while and wait and see how good these cards turn out to be. My money doesn't come easy. The next card I buy is going to have to push 2 years before the next upgrade. Does that seem unreasonable? I don't think that it is. I am fully open to buying any brand of card, but I want a good card. I don't buy into hype or even reviews because they are not all encompassing. And you would all do well to remember that.
Forgive my rant, but I am just tired of the whole thing.
Assume I'm Japanaese and say I'm an Anime fan and I have a web page that has links to other fan sites. Say one of those sites begins to add illegal things on it. Like pirated videos, hentai (XXX stuff), etc. But those things weren't there when I originally linked to it. But, hey, we get busy and can't keep our pages up to date. Am I now responsible?
I realize the true intent here may be to prevent direct linking like many MP3 sites do. ie.) "I only have links to these files. None of them reside on my server/site."
So, what is to keep Japanese from obtaining sites elsewhere in the world anonymously. The only enforceability of this would be for servers hosting data (or I guess hosting the links to the data) that physically reside on Japanese soil. Or, I suppose that if a foreign site could be linked to ownership by a Japanese citizen that may be enforceable.
I am glad I'm a U.S. citizen. As messed up as things may seem over here, we are still pretty damn hard-core when it comes to freedom of speech. (Let's keep that up BTW.)
This all seems to me like corporate marshall law. Bring on the one world government, right? That way they'll make us all abide by the same rules. Screw that. Who's money is it anyway? I don't understand why companies just want to keep growing and growing. It's got to be those rich fsckers at the top doing all this crap. Enough of my ranting. I feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for Australia too.
I thought the episode was hillarious. I admit, I had to go and play some Quake 3 afterwards so I could (as Scully put it) get my "yah-yahs off." It was cool definately. The whole concept of the program running itself though was too much though. And you can't just make someone disappear from reality like Mulder did. Come on. This is why that episode is dangerous. John/Jane Q. Public watch that and start wondering if it's possible for such things to be. Like a computer program (it wasn't even the same program) jumping into another. Alternating realities. Real deaths. Not being in control of a system... etc. This could make the computer games realm look dangerous.
Also, I speak for myself here and many others. I'm in no shape what-so-ever to be actually running and jumping around like a Quake game. Forget the all night LAN parties. Hell, i'd be tired of the game in 10 minutes.
So, I definately like the episode for it's fun... and those shots of Miss Afterglow (hubba hubba), as a long time X-Files fan, it sucked.

Nuke them now! Nuking was, is still, and will always be the solution. Nuke them till they glow and be done with it!
I can't believe I said that.

Cheers.
At least spell "coolest" right.
You should work for the RIAA or the MPAA.
DOH! Forgot to select the A.C. mode. Lost all that I moderated and I didn't get back my points. It's all that trolls fault.
I did not mean to mod this as funny. I picked troll for a -1. I don't know what happened. May my karma forgive me. And would somebody at /. ban this jerk.
I'm really getting sick of all this crap. Really I am. You are all posting like the foolish 16 to 18 year olds I LAN party with (I'm 26 myself). What am I talking about you ask?
"3DFX is dead! Long live nVidia!"
"3DFX was once good."
"3DFX sux!"
etc...
Please ignore this test.
Let me throw this out for an example then.
The plot is out there.
