Since they have to create a law to make free software their policy, I wonder what is the current law regarding software purchases. Do they currently require the use of MS products ?
While I have the upmost respect for Richard Stallman's philosophy and writings, I don't think his ideas for remedies in the trial have much chance of being implemented. The government has shown no interest in interoperability or fair buying practices. They do require POSIX for operating systems, but they don't require applications to use POSIX. They purchase hardware form companies that have signed NDAs with Microsoft. They use Microsoft proprietary file formats and protocols, etc.
Even federally funded research projects use MS Word on their websites. For example, check out the FIRE website.. Just scroll down to the feasibility study near the bottom. If the government doesn't require interoperability when they purchase hardware/software, how are they (the government) going to force Microsoft to share interface data when the government doesn't require it for their own purchases?
Actually, the above comment wasn't a troll, it was SPAM. That's right, just some lowlifes trying to make money by interfering with an on-line discussion.
"While Stallman, and others, attempt to fan the flames of petty jealousy, I am inclined to believe that most people will be able to see past this appeal to childish spite and pettiness and recognize that it hurts rather than helps."
The only one fanning the flames here is you. Put down the gasoline and back away.
Okay, you're obviously new to the use of FUD. Here's a couple of quick tips. FUD is more successful when directed at those who don't posess adequate knowledge of a topic. That's not the case here on/. as most of us have been using Linux for some time. Secondly, but no less important, successful FUD relies on half-truths as opposed to patently false statements. So, next time, do a bit more research and be more subtle. Also, find a less knowledgeable audience.
Could Microsoft use the buying practices of State and Federal Governments as a defense ?
For example, if the government doesn't require the browser to be separate, or that the APIs, file formats or protocols to be publicly available, can this weaken the government's case ?
What about TFTR and JET ? How is 16 megawatts of fusion power considered to be not going anywhere ? MFE has made steady and consistent gains without handouts from defense. Claiming that ICF is research towards fusion energy and not weapons is less than honest.
One idea is to have the neutrons react with a Lithium blanket to generate more fuel. Another idea is to use low activation fuels, the products would be mostly alpha particles (helium ash) instead of neutrons.
This is bogus. Inertial confinement is just the DODs way to continue funding Star Wars technology development. If the funds spent on ICF were put into an MFE burning plasma experiment, we would be decades closer to a working power plant.
Why are the Federal and State Governments spending all this money on lawsuits and such when all they have to do is change their procurement guidelines? What a waste of money! They are Microsoft's biggest customers, therefore they have helped create Microsofts monopoly with their buying practices.
Obviously, you meant to say: I've never heard of anybody switching from Linux to Microsoft. Remember to use preview!

Straight teeth or a fair patent system, do we have to choose ?
Which companies have been destroyed by RMS ?
M. genitalium ? They should rent "Weird Science" and create something fun.

"What changes to their current UNIX definition would be required for this?"
Here are some requirements for UNIX 95.In addition, several truckloads of cash are required.
The colors look great in lynx.
Of all possible geometries, if the universe turns out to be flat, that would be amazing.
If you truly believe in what you have written, then why are you an anonymous coward?
This study was obviously paid for by Microsoft ;-)
then why are there such large redshifts?

Doesn't this sound exactly like Cosm?

Have you released ALL your source under BSD ? If not, which licenses have you used ?

What is the advantage of using Intel's utility ?

Okay, I guess this IS different from ICF. Of course, since it isn't MFE, it's probably still bogus.
I heard that there may be a fair amount of 3He on the moon.
