Precisely the way Samba has helped to undermine Microsoft's monopoly, by allowing IT guys to move their file servers to Linux while maintaining compatibility with existing workstations and desktop applications.

A lot of people write VBScript and ASP, and these people will be moving to C# because it's where Microsoft is leading them and they follow like sheep. If their C# applications run just as well on another platform, that's one less reason to stay on Windows.

If you're going to pay, you may as well pay for what's going to give you the most bang for your buck. And that's Windows.

WRONG. More and more businesses (and government agencies, and schools) are switching to Linux, precisely BECAUSE it gives them more bang for their buck. Yes, even on the desktop.

Credit unions rock. I never pay fees for anything. They have extra free stuff too, like I can get free money orders, they have a notary public on staff if I need something notarized for free, and they finally fixed their online banking thing so it works properly in my browser (it used to have a Java applet menu that only worked on some browser/OS combinations). They also set it up so I can transfer money into my mom's account, but can't see her balance or transfer money out or anything (I'm paying rent while she's living elsewhere).

I bought a monthly bus pass from a vending machine near where I work, and used my debit card. The credit union called me to make sure I'd really made that transaction and my card hadn't been stolen or anything, since it seemed unusual and had been flagged by Visa. I can't imagine a bank actually making that kind of a call.

Exactly! That's why his idea doesn't work. It works for awhile, but then your address gets out, and then you're screwed. If you have multiple addresses for different purposes, you can manage them.

The e-mail address I used for eBay finally got added to a spam list, so I changed it, and now all that spam bounces. I don't have to worry about losing legitimate mail, because that address is only used by eBay and those involved in auctions I'm participating in (none currently).

However, the address I normally give out to people (I don't post it online anywhere, but I do use it as my return address when I send mail) gets several pieces of spam per day, presumably for the reasons you listed.

Good! If the spammers find some other vendor, this means Verio will stop getting their money. This means Verio does not profit by disregarding their own AUP. This means Verio will (hopefully) be less likely to knowingly provide service to spammers in the future. That would mean that the next time the spammers need to find some other vendor, they'll have one less other vendor to choose from. Lather, rinse, repeat.
