yeah, it's been going this way for literally thousands of years, and israelis are not any better *or* worse then the palestinians. If you start ocunting who has done more harm over all those years, you will probably see that both sides even out here.
SOmebody here is quick to jump to conclusions and put blame on one side. That's fine. Why in the world does it get moderated up then?:(
On the other hand, what is scary is that we are in a state of mass panic now, trying to halt the life of the country for no good reason, and is just seeking to find someone to blame so we can retaliate. Doesn't matter whom, we just need blood to avenge the American blood that was spilled. That's a normal natural human response, yet not a healthy one. I am afraid, US might call for an "eye for an eye" retaliation.
What now? We will probably see a serious increase in that anti-missle defense budget Bush is pushing for. Yes, I know, it is useless. After all, it was not a missle that hit US, but a much cheaper and more effective way. Yet it proves that US is in danger, and will allow the panic to be used to push through a new and increased missle defense budget...:(
Yes, this is a troll. It's just sad that the damage that will be done if/when US retaliates will probably outweigh the damage that has already been done. It is under our control, yet the outcome can clearly be seen even before US gets into that mess.
It is possible, as in 'doable' - that's true. But think about the implications.
First being technological. Say, you have a 100 or so viruses going around. Would you scan all your neighboring subnets and infect all the machines you find with an 'anti-virus' like that? If CodeRed by itself creates bandwidth issues and headaches (think AT&T @HOME), think of a 100 or so 'anti-viruses' contributing in the same way at the same time!
Second being ethical. If you are hacked once, do you want another 100 people to hack your computer to 'fix' the damage someone else has done? Or, better yet, How would you like people hacking your machine in a 'benign' fashion because they were pursuing a good cause, and hacked your computer to vaccinate it? The cause is noble - it might prevent the spread of the real virus, were you ever to be infected by it, but how much do you care about how good the intentions of the one who hacked you were?
Last, but not least, is legal. What if all those 'anti-viruses' essentially DOS your box trying to 'fix' it? Can you sue the one who sent you the anti-virus? What if something went berserk in the code of the anti-virus (yeah, I know, software does not have bugs, but what if it happens), and wipes out your whole server, while it could be fixed fairly easily otherwise? Can you sue the creator? Probably yes. After all, the 'anti-virus' virus did not present you with a click-through license that disclaimed any liability or even gave you a choice to *not* be infected.
Just a few thoughts that came to mind. There are more. If you can think of some, post below!
Since we mentioned PHP, I remembered that cURL is actually... yesterday's news. I am not sure why it is mentioned as a "new language" in the article. I develop PHP, and, as far as I remember, the first mention of cURL on the mailing list was well over a year ago. That's a good millenia in software life terms...
Nobody at all? Well, I guess I am the only one that develops for Linux then... And I use Windows for the things that haven't been ported or rewritten for Linux. There are a few things like that left, particularly games. Once my office suite gets a bit more friendly towards Word files, and a few more games are ported to Linux, I have precisely no reason to keep windows around... --------------------------------------- ----------
yeah, I usually notice those programs running only when they generate a GPF or some sort of access violation anw to IS reports to me that this or taht app crashed. And I go "Huh? This thing crashed and I do not even know I was running it - moreover, I never knew it existed on my machine and have no clue what installed it or what it does!"
Typical virus-ware. I think we just coined a new term here. Good one too.
BTW: WebHancer got reinstalled at least 4 times on my machine @ work and @ home, and I do not even have a clue about *what* installs this piece of @#$%^.
I am ticked off and can't even do a thing about that. Time to throw away my computer and go live in the woods, like our predescessors...:( ------------------------------ -------------------
I have never bought a distro. Always d/loaded, even when it was a version of slackware with 2.0.36 kernel, and I had a 28.8 modem. Pain, but... at first it was a matter of principle. Then I kinda felt bad because I used linux a lot, it was a good product, and I felt like contributing. I contributed tiny pieces of source code and bugfixes, but never monetarily.
On the other hand, since we use RedHat at my company, we bought a couple of their distros (couple versions of redhat that is). And I am thinking about getting support from them too. I don't need it all that much, but if nothing else, I think they deserve to be paid for the job well done.
Still the best stuff flows steadily down my DSL connection, do doubt of that.
Windows? I bought one. From a friend who worked at M$oft. Cheap. I got a couple more with the systems that were going to garbage and just happened to settle down in my basement. I don't really use it on my *personal* computer anyway - not worth the headache. Gotta wish more game developers will jump on the linux bandwagon though... That's the only think I truly miss... ----------------------------------------- --------
What I readdy *do* hate is that i can not close an alert box. And, if I kill it (at least in IE), it kills a whole bunch of other innocent IE windows. Now, does not that suck? ------------------------------------------- ------
Well, I would have gotten here at least at some time if my cable wasn't down, which it is 50% of the time, like right now!
Now, does the fact that I am typing this make it more or less funny? I dunno, but I do not think so because I have to use DSL at work to get to slashdot...:) You be the judge... ---------------------------------------- ---------
A healthy dose of paranoia is good, but just inserting the three-letter acronyms do not make your posting interesting *at all*. You are making no sense, sorry.
P.S. I was going to meta-moderate your moderator who rated this as "interesting", but instead I'd rather just reply to it...
Can't express all of that as a meta-moderator...:( ----------------------------- --------------------
... and the policy here, at my company is very simple. You do not need classes. Most of the things we do are so new, they are not taught in classes yet. However, we have to be constantly studying by ourselves to keep up with the technology, and if this takes some reasonable amount of time, it's ok.
In short, we study as we work, during regular work hours, it's a necessity, and we learn a lot this way (while obviously missing a lot too). ------------------------------------------- ------
Agreed. And you can also (hopefully) build your own after designing it on the web (e.g. quadrant.echospace.com)...:) Hope more of them realized that designing a house on the web is effective (and thus good)...:) -------------------------------------- -----------
I am not sure who I'd rather excericise my bashing abilities upon - MS or AT&T. They are pretty much the same as far as I am concerned.
There are three entities in the US - corporations, government and us (the rest that is not covered by the first two).
Corporations suck because they rule the world and take away your freedoms; the governement sucks because they just take away our freedoms (unless they are regulating corporations, which happens extremely rarely, but is nice), and we suck because we enjoy seeing our freedoms being taken away (at least we don't do anything about that; rather we wait for somebody else to step up).
Bottom line is that AT&T is just as bad as MS as far as I am concerned. Both have stepped on my toes and have taken away my freedoms, so why would you choose one over the other? ------------------------------------------ -------
Well, I guess, I live in a universe of perfection - Every one does his best for the society's sake... and... never expcts to be paid back. And the life is beautiful... errr... not really... In my dreams maybe...
But in general, I'd still want to state that this is true - the greatest works are done *in general* by people who do it not with the ultimate purpose of reaping rewards, but for the sake of others. That includes a lot of scientists, philosophers, well... that might be a little bit of a stretch, but... that's the idea of open source... kinda. We all know very well that open source does quite well as long as it is kept open, but we all know what happens to open source projects when you try to squeeze money out of them. They die.
(Actually, I was referring to Free Software, but "Open Source" is just a better buzz-word, in my opinion, and the two kinda go hand-in-hand here, as far as I am concerned; yes, I know the difference.)
in addition to his obvious ignorance I would remind slashdotters that neither Einstein, not Tesla, nor any other great minds of the past seeked glory and recognition. They did it for the sake of the people, or at least just for the heck of it (read: science) but never seeked a reward. He does.
His purposes and attitudes seem noble, at least donating money to a charity seems like a good idea. But then, again, if he does that clearly for-profit, FDA will stop that right there. In fact, he is expecting that any moment. Yes, I know, it might not be hurting anyone physically, but it is a scam anyway and that is something that the we have to deal with.
As far as his ignorance... oh, this is truly bad. Here he compares the way our body works to a transistor (resembles a recent movie, except there we were duracell batteries, right?). I do not know anything about how a body works, but it is apparent that he has no clue about how transistors work, that's for sure. He also seems to be missing the point that the energy can't be drawn (and amplified) out of the thin air. Tesla himself probably would have turned over in his grave if he heard something like that.
I would not even touch his perception of God ("God is the mathematical formula which runs our universe"). errr... hideous herecy, along with toddler level of comprehension put into scientific words!
!!!Last, but not least, every one of us has seen spammers and MLM promoters, right? Right. What do they use? Pop-ups that advertize you to buy a product - he's got it! Paid ads - he's got it! TESTIMONIALS OF SOMEBODY'S GREAT EXPERIENCE AND MIRACULOUS CURE IN CAPITAL LETTERS? - he's got that too! popups that open up when onUnload() happens? - He's got that as well. It doesn't take too much time to see that he is making money just off this website, just running it and getting money off advertizers with very nicely disguised ads (just look at the source code of his pages). And now, sice he is getting slashdotted, he is getting even more, we are helping him quite a bit.
Now, since I established that this is a rather typical scam, and this guy exhibits remarkable ignorance, and takes pride in it, makes money in the very detestable ways that slashdotters hate, and shamelessly considers and announces himself the next best thing in the Universe (or at the very least the next Einstein)... since all this is true... why in the world would Roblimo even think about interviewing the guy. Yes, it might be entertaining to see the gross stupidity and laugh at it, but did we really degrade far enough to interview a guy just to laugh at stupidity? I think this is something for those scandalous magazines that you can buy at any grocery store, not for slashdot!
Actually, this will do nothing more than eventually kill your network because of lack of bandwidth. Just think for a second...
Such a driver will force people (read 'Id') to write games in a way that will reveal the client only what the client *should really* see at any given point in time. And when, say, you move a tiny bit, it has to send you more data (the stuff you couldn't see before) and invalidate all the data that you had, because you shouldn't be seeing it anymore. That would be immense amount of traffic! *ouch*!!!
PR, unfortunately, is a big part of Software Development (yes, I consider it development). Therefore those who do the *real* development, coding, debugging, etc. ultimately depend on the PR the company has. Without it, nobody cares if your product is the best in the entire Universe, simply because they won't even know it exists, and this leads to a company burning cash and eventually laying you off.
I am a developer, I write code for a small startup. I maintain our servers. And my company is struggling with all that PR mess on which I ultimately depend personally. If I find a good suggestion here, I'll go and bring it to my boss and marketing guys and see what they think.
In a nutshell, I am a typical slashdot reader, and this article affects my life, so why shouldn't it be posted here? I think it highlights a very important aspect critical to the survival of many small companies like mine and the one of the original poster. It's time someone mentioned something like this.
