Funny how in the most socialist times the Western economies have seen, the growth has been phenomenal, advancing further in 100 years than in the previous 10000. Why was this? Perhaps because people were able to do things other than scratch around in the gutter for food or work in deathtrap factories for an absolute pittance, and people like you want to turn the clock back to the 19th century just so you can make a fast buck. When your shares become worthless because your stupid self-centred capitalism killed the goose that laid the golden egg, I'll be the one punching you in the queue for the soup kitchen.
Which is fine if you're 23 and have no debts or dependents. Slightly different when your 33 and have a big mortgage and 2 young kids to support. Yes I will probably be ok because I don't have this problem (although I resent enormously that I'm going to lose the only job I've ever wanted) but pity the kids who will have to put up with a great deal of stress as their parents have to scramble desperately to keep their heads above water.
Because they don't have a better argument than that to justify the fact that a multi-billion dollar organisation can't do any better (and in some cases worse) than a rag-bag bunch of amateur programmers.
Consider that especially in corporate desktops and really on a home user level that 99% of computer users have no business performing any task that could be labeled as "setup/configure exercises". This is a thorn in linux's side. Microsoft has spread a load of crap that these tasks can be acomplished by your average user. Sometimes they manage them using microsoft's wizard, 80% of the time they do they call me to come in and fix what they broke because they don't know how the machine works and how applications interact and in short, didn't know what the fucking consequences of their actions were.
You say that like it's the user's fault that they've been lulled into a false sense of security. If software is unusable by the least computer-literate person you know then you didn't design it properly. I'm sick and tired of trying to figure out any kind of method behind the madness of 'clever' coders. Perhaps if some of the high and mighty posers on this forum tried to put themselves in the position of the users occasionally instead of dissing them for not knowing what you know our jobs might not all be heading to India.
Affirmative action is a way to jump-start the futures of a formerly oppressed minority who have several years of denied opportunities to make up on their oppressors. It is a good idea and I'm tired of hearing people badmouthing it because a biased newspaper report allows them to justify their small-minded racism.
So do I, since I work on it every day, just like thousands of other programmers. It may not be pretty or fashionable but it does what it's supposed to do and that's all most large organisations need.
Nope, unfettered capitalism failed as well, that's why social democracy came about, which has delivered more progress in 100 years than either feudalism or sweat shop capitalism or any other oppressive system has done in 10,000.
One of the main tenets of social democracy is that the better-off pay more tax and it has worked really well. Sadly the better-off can't see that a fair society benefits everyone including them and are trying to destroy everything that put them where they are.
Dude, just because no-one you know uses it doesn't mean it's dead. There are billions of lines of currently used COBOL and Fortran. It's a damn sight more alive than OS/2 that's for sure. I wish it wasn't, and I wish I got to code in something better, but to say that it's dead is just clueless.
Cue hysterical Microsoft shill: "XP is so stable, I manage 25344563 workstations and none of them have bluescreened in the last 6 months and you zealots just want any excuse to bash Microsoft coz slashbots are blah blah blah......"
This is buzzword stuff though, so it doesn't have to have any resemblance to the actual meaning of the word. Anyone else remember when leverage was just a noun?
Next time someone tells me Linux is too hard to use and Windows is the consumer OS, I would like to walk them past the computer room in my parents' house where they can listen to my dad swear at WinME as it annoys him yet again with spurious messages that mean very little (and are hard to find on google). My mum won't even consider using a PC, since they are ridiculously difficult to use for a technophobe like her.

Did you have a mortgage or any kids? It's not just 25 years olds who are getting screwed.
Damn commies depriving a corporation of it's God-given RIGHT to make a profit.
The people who built my car still make parts for it even though they stopped making it about 5 years ago.
No you just hire a bunch of Indians to do it.
Doesn't mean we should stop looking though.
Erm tell an Australian that an aborigine (black person) stole something and they'll instantly believe you. What's your point?
Money can buy you all the prom queens you want.

That was also a long time ago and common-sense has prevailed since.
If dishwashers were built like Windows, sales of washing up liquid would rocket.
And Adolf Hitler =P
I hate when people bring that up when I say I'm veggy.

Sounds more like Scooby to me. Relp Raggy a rhost!

Nope they'd be using OS/390 or z/OS, which are both very much alive (and probably producing your electricity bill as we speak).

The notion of "off" is confusing to users
Which users? The last remaining lost tribe of Neanderthal pygmies? Marketing people are a strange bunch.

This year's $299 cellphone will be next year's $50 special offer.
