When OSS becomes an effective monopoly and uses anti-competitive tactics to maintain its hold on a specific market then it, too, will become an object of hatred. Hating Microsoft is not a knee-jerk reaction for those of us who have to endure using sub-standard software every day.
They licensed Spyglass Mosaic from Spyglass with an agreement to pay a percentage for every copy sold. Since they then decided to give it away for nothing Spyglass were screwed (and sued Microsoft over it AFAIK). Legitimate perhaps, but not either innovative or fair.
they assume that the manufacturer is up to no good, and that the consumer is an idiot
Which sums up the cigarette industry and its customers beautifully (note I am a smoker and know I am an idiot - no flames necessary), and yet bizarrely there's a lot of legislation involving cigarettes. How many of you disagree with them?
You're right. Punishing criminals just because they committed a crime is just plain wrong. Next you'll be telling us that the methods of organised crime are just aggressive business tactics and they shouldn't be punished because millions of people have chosen to pay the protection money.
By that argument, no company could ever be a monopoly. For example, say an electricity company has 100% of a market. They still can't charge whatever they like as people would consume less and less electricity as the price rocketed. They can, however, charge what the market will bear in terms of prices, which will be more than if there were 3 or 4 electricity companies competing. This is exactly what Microsoft are doing, therefore they are a monopoly.
You think Apple (and Microsoft and IBM for that matter) don't have an R&D department that does nothing but try out cool stuff that may or may not have any real value. That's what this is, Linux R&D.
To be able to look past the name I'd have to forget the poor products that Microsoft have released in the past. It's a matter of trust you see, which Microsoft have yet to earn, at least from me.
Although most people don't particularly want to shell out another $1000 when they already have a computer, no matter how good OS X is. When I can buy it for my PC (and Satan skis to work) I'll give it a go.
Yes they were - after they had already caused a great deal of misery. That was my point. People don't trust corporations to do the right thing, as they have a long and inglorious history of not doing so.

Except that I'm a Brit where most of the population is urban and SUVs are a damn nuisance. I've got no objection to farmers and other people that actually need that kind of machine having one (and who buy proper ones, not the pathetic toys), I'm just tired of people who buy one because it's the latest fad and have no consideration for anyone else because they think they're perfectly safe in their tank.
And since when were British Telecom the only phone service provider in the whole of Europe?
So my only choice is take it or leave it? Ergo monopoly.

Didn't the French help the American colonists during the War of Independence? Gratitude goes both ways, surely.

Although he has been known to speak the odd word of English every now and again......

Yes they should have meaningful names that describe the application like errrr.....Acrobat.

Have you looked at this? It might be what you're looking for.
Have you thought about setting up a dial up server on your box and connecting the Dreamcast to that?

Most of the kids here wouldn't get that reference, but good one anyway :-)
Your comment about the solar panels being used as tables reminded me of this.
Since Windows NT5 was 2 years late, I wouldn't throw stones in that glass house of yours.
That's why they called the latest one ME.

Included in the price is not the same as free, especially in the case of Win2000.
Or connecting to a Citrix Metaframe NT box using a Linux client and being able to run Windows software, like I used to do in my last job
AFAIK, Apple did sue Microsoft for copying their GUI, but the judge ruled that look and feel could not be copyrighted
I don't think there's a bank in the world that doesn't have management like that.
