To paraphrase a lecturer of mine, "when you have five hundred new accounts to create at the beginning of every semester, which approach would you rather take?" It's all about the right tool for the right job.

  9. Every DVD? on Australia Rules DVD's are Films, Not Software · · Score: 1
Last time I checked, the V in DVD actually stood for Versatile, not Video, as so many would have us believe. Thus, any kind of recordable information can be stored upon them. This includes movies as well as everything else.

My point is, what do we consider a DVD containing actual software to be, since it has been previously ruled that DVDs are in fact NOT software?

  10. Linking with Xanadu on You May Not Link This Web Site · · Score: 1
Hyperlinks on the Web only work in one direction. ie. you can't follow one link back to the source from the destination. If KPMG (can't link to them, I don't have an Agreement!) were using Xanadu rather than the World Wide Web, with its bi-directional hypertext and host of other copyright benefits, they may have a better chance of enforcing their banal rules more effectively. Until then, they are gonna have to hope for the best and try to not look surprised when it doesn't work.

In 1994, Uzi Nissan registered the domain name www.nissan.com for his Nissan Computer Corporation.

In 1995, the Nissan Motor Company noticed that this "Internet" thingy was catching on and they may as well jump on too. Upon attempting to register the obvious domain, they found Uzi had beaten them to it.

Around 2000, the Nissan Motor Company commenced legal proceedings. Read Uzi's story here.

So far, Uzi still has control of the domain name, but for how long remains to be seen.

The moral of this story? Be careful to ensure that when you register your surname as a domain name that it isn't already a business name. Confused yet?

8,000 meteors per hour? Good luck. In our modern cities, light pollution is so extreme that we will be lucky to see even a fraction of that number.

Now would be a good time to revisit the Slashdot story on the Atlas of Worldwide Light Pollution. It really makes you sit up and think about what we are doing to our night skies.

  13. Doctor Who bad Sci Fi???? on Pyramid Shaped Keyboard · · Score: 1

You don't need to be 1337 to appreciate Doctor Who. It pioneered television science fiction and due to the budget constraints (what was spent on the pilot of Voyager would have paid for all 30+ years, with change), it was able to focus on the scientific notions at hand and not waste effort on thinking up new ways to make the phaser fire look more 'realistic'. And on the topic of weapons, the good Doctor never employed anything more lethal than his Sonic Screwdriver, or the odd Jelly Baby. Surely a better view of the future than the current wave of "lock photon torpeedos on their warp core and blow them back to the Stone Age!" Go rent the tapes, watch them with an open mind and try to think of any other TV show with a more memorable theme song.

Kim: "Uh, didn't the slipstream drive kill us all the last time we used it, and we only survived due to some bizzare storyline involving a stolen Borg time-machine or something?"
