  2. What you should get... on Creating Music Using Your PC? · · Score: 4, Informative

    1) The most powerful PC or Mac you can afford. You are not going to be able to use Linux if you want to do anything serious as far as music production goes.

    2) A pro audio soundcard. Again, depending upon how serious you are...if you just want to dabble until you find out exactly what your style is, your SBLive should be more than sufficient. I can't really recommend a particular unit to you though, because I don't have one myself.

    3) Software. These days, the simplest and cheapest solution is to go all software. VST instruments simulate "real" electronic instruments (synths/samplers/etc) much more cheaply than outboard MIDI gear. I very rarely use any of my hardware synths. As for what you should get, it really depends upon what you intend to do. You can get demo versions of many popular packages. At the minimium, I would recommend a sound editor (Sound Forge is good, some people like Cool Edit or WaveLab) and a sequencer that supports audio such as Cubase or Sonar. If you plan to use a lot of samples/loops, I would highly recommend Acid 4, which includes VSTi support and basic MIDI. Softsynths that I like are the Pro-52 and FM7 (both by Native Instruments, I think) and the Junglist (Sonic Syndicate).

Sorry, but it is impossible to pass judgement on OS/400 if you have no experience with it. It's a COMPLETELY different way of thinking about operating systems, and it's simply not comparable with Unix or Windows. I come from a Linux/Windows background, and I'm still trying to get my head around the /400 mindset after working with it for a few months. Oh, and the filesystem you don't like? It's DB/2. Think about how cool that is for a minute. It's easy to look at something different and immediately dismiss it as *wrong*, but we don't have that sort of ignorance here on Slashdot...right? ...right?

No, but it really does just do that sometimes! Actually, a hell of a lot. Try doing tech support for an ISP sometime...actually, no, don't. Go off into the woods and become a hermit first. 15. As an interviewee... on How Do You Interview A Sysadmin Candidate? · · Score: 1

First of all, when you're an interviewee, sometimes it's hard to tell whether you're talking to an HR Drone/PHB or someone who actually knows what they're talking about. I find myself reluctant to go into full-geek mode on an interview because most people at a given company don't really understand what geeks are all about.

Second, where the hell are the job postings from all of you!? I've been trying to find a job for a while, but my lack of "professional experience" is keeping me from getting my foot in the door. I'm reading these questions and saying, "yeah, why would I memorize all the flags for grep when I've got a man page to look at? Isn't it more important to know WHAT and WHY?" Which seems to be a common theme here, but not one I'm seeming to find "out in the world."

A true story...a placement agency I was working with had me take a Solaris test at BrainBench. Keep in mind that I had never touched Solaris before. However, the tests let you use not only your related knowledge, but any online/print resources available. I passed the test easily, and I THOUGHT that this would speak kind of highly of my abilities, but no, that whole HR drone mentality again.

  16. Re:Lots of holes in the story (LOTS of spoilage) on Review: Planet of the Apes · · Score: 1

    *SPOILERS HERE*

The other planet was NOT Earth. They went through great pains to explain that the apes came out on top on that planet because the humans were stranded without the benefit of the full technology of all of human civilization and thus, once the apes developed ambition and were no longer content to serve their human masters, the physically stronger race won out. The horses? I don't know, either we're not supposed to notice or we're supposed to assume that they're horse-like animals that happened to be on that planet.

My question is, where did the gorillas, orangutans, etc. come from? The only apes I saw on the spaceship were chimps.

As for the ending, I think it was intended to be maddeningly vague so that they could do a sequel however they wanted. The problem is that we weren't given enough information to come up with a reasonable explanation for it. The one thing we can semi-safely say is that Thade SOMEHOW escapes and uses the gun he was left with to create some sort of ape revolt. Whether this is in that planet's future, the Earth at some earlier point in time, or an alternate reality altogether is impossible to determine. However, when Marky Mark is bringing his hip-hop rhythm home at the end, his display does say that he is approaching Earth, and we're not given any indication of a malfunction.
