Yeah, but MS realized Windows is too generic a word, and they settled. Ajax is a verbatim ripoff of an invented product name. The only defense would be that it doesn't create confusion in the marketplace, but that's far from guaranteed -- especially given "SOAP" web services -- and Colgate could probably demonstrate that it dilutes and devalues their trademark.

It's basic economics: Don't pay more than what a product is worth to you. Apple realized it would probably help sales to put a more reasonable price on the iPhone. That's funny.. I would swap my neighbors for war on anything.

And for the record, I'd swap the show as well. For those who don't know, most Aussie TV, especially Neighbours, is about the quality of the 20th century BBC: low production value and weak acting. If you can get beyond that, the plots are pretty mundane as well. I just read that they apparently switched to HD for the 2007 season, but before that, viewership was severely declining. It's definitely a solid Meh, whose main purpose is to provide Australian produced content, since most TV and film is imported. While I'd rather watch grass grow than watch Neighbours, I will say that its popularity reflects well on the character and (general) good nature of Australia. If it wasn't for their metered broadband, I'd want to live there :( What can I say, I need my fix.

Heh. I never really thought that was true. People can't be that one-dimensional and/or gullible, I thought, to A) approve of anything that "makes them safe," and B) to believe something will actually accomplish that without giving any thought to the methods. Then I saw the post-debate coverage last night, and when they were asking one woman why she would vote for McCain, which she had indicated that she would do, she said "He makes me feel safe." Now I respect John McCain, but I don't buy that staying in Iraq will make us any safer, and even if it made us slightly safer, I don't believe it's worth the price. Honestly, why don't we all just walk around with bicycle helmets and kneepads. Slip/trip and fall accidents are the leading cause of injury and death in the home after all. Lives could be saved! It's amazing that convenience, fashion, and appetite outweigh safety in our daily lives, but when it comes to terrorism, suddenly no price is too high. As long as someone else pays it I guess.

I bought a home breathalyzer, and by manipulating my breathing, I can alter the results +/- .05 in either direction from the "norm". And I'm just talking about minor things like how long I hold a breath before exhaling. A matter of 0-5 seconds can make a world of difference. Generally, the more air exchanged and the less time the air is exposed to the lungs prior to blowing, the lower the results. Exhaling deeply then inhaling deeply, then blowing immediately will give substantially lower readings. Hyperventilating first, lower still. Holding your breath, even for a couple of seconds? Might as well turn around and place your hands behind your back...

Actually, there's evidence when you look at regional crime rates and corresponding population data. Note that crime rates != conviction, or even arrest rates, merely reported crimes. Of course, the problem isn't based in race, but rather the economic and social structures that either encourage crime, or tacitly accept it. If your social circle belittles education and promotes thug behavior, then it's more likely you'll get involved in crime. It may well be true that minorities commit more crimes, but that's not ipso facto evidence that minorities are a problem, rather it's a symptom of deeper issues. Unfortunately, it's very difficult for outside influences to change a culture or subculture. Law enforcement is a Catch-22. It absolutely must be provided, but it also creates a perception of oppression, real or imagined. As for the carrot, opportunities can and should be provided, but ultimately change comes from within; opportunities do nothing if people don't take advantage of them. Not everybody achieves their goals, and nobody's guaranteed any success in life, but the guaranteed way to fail is not to try, or to give up.

That's irrelevant.. you should only pay as much as an item is worth *to you*. If it was worth the price you paid, then you've lost nothing. If not, you should have waited longer and/or bought something else. Just because you didn't properly anticipate the rate of decay doesn't mean Apple has somehow wronged you -- it was your mistake, not theirs. People make the same mistakes every day in the stock market, so you're not alone. Some people bought houses anticipating a continuing price increase. At least you only bought a phone and you (hopefully) realized from the start that you wouldn't be able to resell it for more than you paid.

At any rate, I'd bet that if you're persistent enough, you can probably get a refund for the difference and/or make an exchange for the next model up. It's in Apple's best interest to keep happy customers, so they'll probably do what they can to make you happy.

The axiom is that "correlation does not imply causation," not that "correlation excludes causation." There's a high incidence of cavities among people who eat lots of sugary foods. Do sugary foods promote cavities, or do cavities compel people to eat sugary foods? It's always worth *considering* that your causes are reversed (or affected by some unknown/unconsidered external factor, such as oral hygiene), but in many cases the reverse just doesn't make sense. If cavities promoted a sugary diet, you'd expect to see people eat more sugary food as they accumulate more cavities. Sure, you might find correlation in otherwise unrelated data -- the inverse ratio of pirates to global temperature is the typical example I believe -- but that's more of a warning to take your results with a grain of salt, not to dismiss them out of hand. (And actually, piracy is rampant in many parts of Africa and Asia today, not to mention that temperature data (arguments of validity aside) goes back well before there were any tall ships in the Caribbean, so that particular citation isn't accurate).

In this particular case, it's worth *considering* that ADD causes more TV viewing, but do the kids really have much of a say in it? Not if the parent has a backbone, and you could easily refine your data to exclude cases where the parent lets the child decide, assuming you could contact the parents to ask them. Essentially, the will of the child is irrelevant.

Sorry, I feel no pity. If it was worth $600, then you got a fair deal. If it wasn't, why did you buy it? The RAZR was something like $400 when it first came out; now it's typically one of the "freebie" phones you can get with any service contract.

Unless you actually *need* the latest and greatest (top of the line CPU to keep up with heavy server loads, for example, or the biggest HDs you can find), the only value added in buying early is bragging rights. And those are usually trumped when your friend buys the exact same thing a month later for 30% less. Lesson learned, I hope.
