It's not about smarts; rather it's the nature of distributing material which is meant to be viewed. If it can be seen or heard, then it can be copied, and software and hardware engineers know that. They know that their DRM is nothing more than obfuscastion which will do little more than prevent casual copying. But the execs keep paying people to create it -- possibly because they don't know any better -- and as long as they keep buying, someone else will keep selling.

If you have a friend or family member then sure, use them, but there aren't many tech savvy people in my old man's peer group, and I don't live at home. But yeah, there are 1 or 2 other important buildings in DC, so keeping them powered is probably just a bit of a priority, even though most of them probably have generators. The DC area seemed to have the most stable power of anywhere I've lived, going out only occasionally during freezing rain/ice storms, and never for more than a few hours.

The place I live now.. let's just say the clock on my microwave is rarely accurate for more than 48 hours straight. They're working on putting power lines underground in the "near future," but I'm taking it upon myself to get some solar panels, an inverter, and a nice bank of batteries. Even if they ever stabilize the grid, I'll still save a few bucks on my power bill.

I just want to play the game -- whatever game -- based on its own challenges rather than trying to do it without screwing up X times. I no longer have either the time, patience, or inclination to play a game over and over until I can do it perfectly, and I just don't think it's fun to start over -- if I did, I could just do it on my own without the game forcing me to.

I'm curious to know how the money is divvied up among copyright holders. Is it proportional to the number of copyrights you hold? By what position your song is in the charts? By informal polling? Compulsory reporting of copies? Number of copyrighted characters prominently represented in cosplay? Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [approaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca is not the most popular cosplay character, you must acquit! The defense rests.

Perhaps, but it's a lot difference when "the ones" have to be all of X million college students rather than one or two people. It would require extraordinary organization and coordination, and frankly it's not worth it. How many students are likely to care about people on scholarship? How many would care enough to stop attending or not enroll? Moreover, how many people would turn down a scholarship, or even a guaranteed spot on a team just because of a silly Facebook policy? I'd wager heavily that for every person who would, there are 50 who would be happy to take their place. So the University has power too.. if students really held all the power, homework and attendance would never be mandatory.

  21. Re:Bad Streets...and why no US Autobahn? on Interstate Highway System: 50th Anniversary · · Score: 2, Interesting

The autobahn was engineered to be durable and long lasting, and the US highways were designed to be cheap (but not as long lasting). In some parts of the US, the highways are in very good condition, but there's just too much variance from state to state, and even among locales within states.

But they're also much more efficient and prompt with repairs in Germany. Anecdotally, I'm told they have huge trucks (like that thing in the movie Cars) that can rip up pavement and lay down a new top layer in one pass. They also pioneered traffic monitoring and electronic speed limit and other signs to alert drivers to upcoming congestion.

But the biggest factor in the safety of German roads is the drivers. Most Germans would never consider eating a burger or putting on makeup while behind the wheel -- they take driving much more seriously, along with vehicle maintenance. Licenses cost a lot of money, and you have to be 18 to get one. Tailgating is illegal, as are rude getures, passing on the right, and rust holes or any fluid leaks, and enforcement is strict. You can get a ticket if your car leaks oil or has balding tires, and passers-by will often report parked cars they see in poor condition. It would be difficult to change the attitude of the typical US driver to match that of the Germans. I wish we could, but I don't see it happening anytime within the next ever.

Yeah, I can definately relate.. I have ADD too, so when redundant questions start cropping up, it's hard for me to keep paying attention.

On the flip side, I've seen teachers/professors completely skip over things inadvertantly, and it's to the detriment of the class if nobody speaks up. Also some professors just do a terrible job of explaining things.

All things considered, I think encouraging questions is probably the lesser of two evils, and the curricula of most classes factors in some amount of time for discussion. Some people may not belong in a particular class, but they're obligated to take it anyway. It's their responsibility to make sure they learn the material, so I try not to hold it against them. Likewise, it's the prof's responsibility to identify when a particular question is best answered outside of class time because the person just doesn't "get it." Most professors are pretty good about that, and if something takes more than 30 seconds to a minute, they'll tell the person to see them after class.

Except they're not telling athletes what they can do; rather it's a condition of receiving scholarships. And they can certainly decide who to give money to and who not.

"If student-athletes don't remove their profiles by the deadline, they risk losing their scholarships, he said. Coaches and athletics counselors will monitor the site for violators."

If they started kicking them off the team or expelling them, that's one thing, but they're just threatening to revoke scholarships.

More serious action may still be okay too, legally, since a code of conduct is common practice. Cheating isn't illegal, but a school can still expell you or take other administrative action if you're caught. The school is providing a service/product (education), and it's provided at their sole discretion, as long as the decision is not made based on race, color, creed, or other constitutionally protected attributes.

I think it's a ridiculous policy, but it's theirs to make.
