    I wasn't actually referring to crapflooding P2P networks with fake MP3s, rather your userspace on your ISP.

    I would imagine it would be easier for the RIAA to find MP3s on actual ISP space than it would be to track down those sharing via P2P. Not by much, but anything to confuse them.

    I've got the perfect name for this. We could refer to it as our 'Shock and Awe' campaign! ;)

    Ok, so everyone create folders on the ISPs and fill them with textfiles named with .MP3 extensions. Make sure to use artist's names & song names for those artists that support this action (Madonna, etc).

    When the bots start picking up on a plethora of bogus MP3 files, it'll take more effort to actually find something worth suing over.

    Just make sure to make the files a 3-5 MB in size.

    but is it even possible / should it even be possible to get a patent for a business model? If so, why hasn't the RIAA patented the process in place for screwing its artist & the general public, while pulling the wool over the eyes of lawmakers? Why hasn't SCO patented the process for going after more-successful companies in order to keep themselves afloat?

    I was going to make the same comment, except that I was going to refer to the entire Vectra line of systems (never used or worked on a Pavilon..)

    This is just another shining example of the utter stupidity of the USPTO.

    Makes me wonder if they're using trained monkeys to grant patents.

    I certainly hope you're correct. I'd love for these five people to be able to tell the RIAA to go f themselves. I serously doubt the RIAA would be able to use any evidence gained by the subpoena for any criminal or civil prosecution.

    Of course, if this is the case those five should immediately consider changing ISPs or at least make damned sure their IP addresses get changed..

    I work at an ISP and are scanned all of the time. I don't send messages to CERT or the NIPC or FBI though.

    You truly are an idiot. This wasn't a scan this was a hijacking likely in order to grab personal citizen data. What ISP do you work for? I need to know which one to avoid.

    ... like you covered all the bases you needed to cover. I'd start contacting some of the tech magazines (Wired, etc.) and provide them with everything you've got. Cast some negative light on the FBI's and Charter's lack of interest in getting involved. If charter has a user group (like Road Runner does at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cable) I'd post it there as well. One of RR's top support guys frequents that group and has gotten the ball rolling on more than one occassion.

    Drawing any negative publicity to this is likely the only way to get it looked into.

    The RIAA is so out-of-touch with the fans, it amazes me that it still exists. I wonder what kind of revenue it gets from the major lables.

    What amazes me more is the fact that so many people are clueless to whats going on. I have an EFF sticker on my truck ("Fair Use has a Possee") which a coworker saw yesterday. He'd never heard of the EFF and had no idea what 'fair use' was or covered.

    Hillary: If you actually read /. (or have one of your lesser demons scour the internet looking for any record of your name), feel free to subpoena Cmr. Taco for my records. You're a public figure and as such are fair game for parody.

    I sincerely hope that when it joins CNBC, no one tunes in. I'd like the show ratings to be in the basement compared to Donahue's..

    Yes, but Verizon today, Road Runner tomorrow.

    The RIAA (and anyone else) can simply point to the Verizon lawsuit as presidence in any future case where they want the names of "pirates".

    Personally, I'd like to see the C&D letters the RIAAs henchmen sent out. I'd bet Hillary Rosen's soul (assuming she actually has one) that they're demanding payment for "infringing" on the "artitst's rights".

    This is OT, but if you like some good fiction, check out Dan Brown. I just read 'The Da Vinci Code' and thought it was really good. The story is totally fiction, but some of what he covers in his book is factual (regarding Da Vinci's paintings and double meanings). I'm reading 'Angels & Demons' right now. Supposedly 'Digital Fortress' is good as well.

    That's a tough one. Computers are a hobby I turned into a career, so a lot of what I do at home is computer-related (just built a dedicated UT2003 server on an old PII 400mhz...)

    Non-tech would have to be :

    -- Dicker around in the garage (just got a radial arm saw)
    -- Play with my son (ok, not really a hobby but a necessity)
    -- I still build models. I'm working on a B17 for my son's room
    -- A little bit of painting

    Wow. I did't realize my life was that boring without computers. How depressing.

    This would've saved the moron I saw in a Suzuki Samurai who pulled upto a Chevy 1500 at a red light & revved his engine. The guy in the Chevy had his windows down and was openly laughing his head off. When the light turned green, you could hear the strain in the Samurai as he attempted to accelerate to catch up to the 1500.

    It was all I could do to keep from wrecking as I passed the Samurai in my wife's minivan..

    From the letter:

    Given the apparent willful nature of your actions, Marvel demands that skindex.net disclose all of its activities with respect to its use of Marvel's properties, including but not limited to all sales or distribution of any products bearing any Marvel intellectual property, the names and contact information for all companies that have purchased or downloaded those items, as well as the addresses of any other websites where the infringing properties have been posted. In addition, skindex.net must disgorge ally and all profits illegally made from its use of Marvel's property and enter into a permanent injunction in which it agrees never to infringe Marvel's property again.

    I realize this is standard C&D letter, but it comes across a bit harsh. I seriously doubt Skindex was hosting Marvel character skins in "blatant bad faith". What next? They go after the fans who took their time to create the skins?

    ...and if you look at the headers, it still shows the IP address of the host used to send the forged email. The originating host (or ISP rather) is still easily determined.

    I stopped it a few years later becasue they make it such a hassle to get and take care of in school. I had to go into the councilor's office, get her attention and get my pills. If the regular person wasn't there, I had to explain to someone else what was going on. Several times I was accused of faking and just being an addict.

    Which is precisely why I never took any of my meds to the school nurse to dole-out. Its none of their goddamned business to begin with & there was no way I was going to sell or give my meds to anyone. You're not required by law (who gives a shit about school rules?) to take your meds to them. My suggestion to everyone is simply don't.

    Wellbutrin is also the prescription drug given to people who are trying to stop smoking, although its under a different name.

    The only side-effect I had when taking it was tinnitus (ringing in the ears) which you eventually learn to tune out, and the overwhelming desire not to smoke.
