Public domain software existed before RMS started his FSF and GCC/GDB projects.
No, you wouldn't have Mozilla to type your post in if it weren't for 100s of developers [none of whom are RMS] or a desktop mananger [gnome/kde.... again not RMS] or X [not RMS] or fuck, even a shell [not RMS] or a kernel to host it all [not RMS].
What's your point?
Even the current state of GCC/GDB has little to do with RMS's efforts.
Exactly. The best thing RMS has done [w.r.t. software] was get the ball rolling. I think he deserves all the credit in the world for that.
I don't think he deserves the credit for the current state of things. GCC is now the result of 1000s of contributors and several dozen active developers none of whom are RMS.
But does anyone know their [GCC developers] names? Hell, I couldn't even name one off the top of my head. [Mark Mitchell comes to mind but I don't think thats right]...
"we [GNU] will support linux as long as it remains popular..."
Um, I'm sure even after Hurd is out and working GCC developers won't say "oh, mission accomplish, linux support removed".
I'm also sure most OSS developers aren't tied to the FSF. People may work on GCC but they don't work for FSF [at least in their minds].
That and many people develop OSS without a thought towards the FSF, GNU or the bloody GPL.
He thinks he is the saviour of free software? Sure he's started some wonderful projects that are VERY useful today [e.g. GCC and GDB] but he's not "irreplaceble". I mean look at GCC change logs. How many commits are due to RMS? He could [...] die tommorow and the world will keep spinning. OSS will keep being developed.
The guy is nothing but a hippie throwback trying to cling to his fame from the past. Get a hair cut you bum!
it's possible that the cpu makes the model string on the fly...
but from what I recall [and I'm not downing my bros box to test] the internal strings don't change.
Even still, cpuid in windows will get you the FSB/CPU speeds which if you know thing-one about your processor [which I assume most geeks do] they'll know the correct speeds.
Which is wrong. The CPU string + model can be used to figure out the appropriate clock rate.
My model 12 Athlon64 3200+ with a bit of googling [with site:amd.com] turns out is a NewCastle 2.2Ghz
if my cpu was running at 2.6Ghz or something [which I don't know how they would do easily...] I would immediately know it was tampered with. The same goes for the XP series.
So unless the people found a way to change the returned CPUID information you can easily figure it out.
"Oh, so you were the one who offered shell accounts, then never replied to the several e-mails sent to you. No doubt that's still in the mailing list archives..."
I've never received emails on the subject. I got one last night though... If other developers want accounts just email me at either the email listed on/. or [tomstdenis at gmail dot com].
I mean I watch the news but not for 8 hours a day like they are [during this "event"]. I feel like beating them with a clue stick but they might kick me out of the basement...
FOX does the "low brow" commercials for get rich quick etc. CNN does the "equitty insurance blah blah blah" investment group commercials.
The net effect is the same thing. They're groups of advertisers who want you to part with your money. It's just the quality of the suit worn by the sales person on the other end of the phone as you sell over your life that differs.
That and CNN is much more "funny" on how they can totally zoom in and micro-report stories then totally ignore the rest of the world/stories.
I've called my parents "news junkies" no less than 8 times this week.
Try to explain to 50 yr olds that "oh, 120,000 dead in the tsunami? How many you think died in Iraq, Sudan, Africa and other countries last year?" As if this disaster [as bad as it is] is the ONLY place "bad things" are happening in the world.
Not to mention the day to day deterioration of our civilization by those seeking material wealth. Little propatainment here, little get rich scam there,...
And the problem [as the OP and many others suggest] is not the Linux kernel. The Linux kernel will support modern drivers....
ITS THE MANUFACTURERS OF THE CARDS!!!!
nvidia realized that people like linux so they wrote drivers for it [and x86_64 too;-)]. ATI just sucks ass and are ignoring the Linux crowd because "all gamers are windows users".
I totally agree. Not only that but us Gentoo folk don't like to be at the whims of what others feel like supporting.
That and [as to the wifi comment of another poster]. Speaking as someone who has traveled a bit... WiFi is not always available and when it is, it's not always cheap.
Being unable to boot my computer because I'm sitting in a Days Inn in San Diego [with lousy to non-existant wifi] is just retarded.
The real reason bandwidth scares MSFT is people can download entire distros in an hour or so. Long gone are the days of Debian on 5 1.44M diskettes [and not having much to show for it].
... except SNOW doesn't work on 64-bit cpus [at least my x86_64 with GCC 3.4.3].
I was trying to encode the freedom downtime dvd with it [it was handy] and it segfaulted on the first frame.
In fact the mplayer crew largely ignore x86_64 alltogether which pisses me off as several months ago I offered shell accounts on my 64-bit box just so they could actually get to adding proper support.
For instance, the x86_64 has MMX, 3dNOW and SSE [1 and 2] NONE of which a stock build of mplayer [up to pre6] will use. It's not like they changed how they work, just now you get 16 SSE registers instead of 8. Even if they just stuck to the first 8 to keep it x86_{32|64} compatible that would be loads better than using C based routines for everything.
OSS is only as good as the developers. And well while mplayer is coming along it still lacks some proper support for x86_64 which is rather annoying.
The MSI board has no fan, only a huge heat sink and it's never overheated during gameplay [though I only play for like 30-60 mins at most in one sitting].
Also ATI support for linux [and specially x86_64] SUCKS ASS.
As for your CRT.... I doubt that. I don't know of many commercial CRTs [at retail outlets] that will do 1600x1200 let alone at 140Hz. The card may be able to output that but I doubt your monitor can.
Um, you don't notice this trend? My 5200FX [which runs doom3/ut2k4/etc decently, sure not 300FPS but it's still good enough] doesn't even have a fan
For the curious it's the MSI brand of 5200 with 128MB of ram and 8x AGP interface. It has a massive [but short so it doesn't hit neighbouring cards] heatsink and that's it. The thing gets a bit warm during play but that's about it.
I'm sure the same calibre GPU two years ago would have required a fan + more power. I'm sure 2 years from now the 6800FX will be a "moderate" card by the newer standards.
So if you don't need excessive GPU power right now get a 5200FX series card. They're good bang for buck. I mean for 100$ [cdn] I got
1. nvidia GPU [e.g. works in linux with good 3d in x86_64 mode] 2. 128MB of DDR 400 memory 3. AGP 8x interface [sounds impressive] 4. Capable DX and GL support 5. Card that can play modern games, specially UT2k4 6. Drives a 1280x1024 LCD monitor at 75Hz;-)
I'll third that motion. Definitely not worth the 60$ or so I spent on it.
If I wanted to be in dark room with monsters I'd just turn the lights out at a Bush war-time briefing. ba-dum-dum-ching!
Thanks, I'll be hear all night... all tommorow morning, afternoon and night, and well, the rest of 2k5.

Most "tech tv" shows [not just that station but on other stations too] are so dumbed-down or outright incorrect [or just pandering] that they're not worth watching anyways.
If I wanted to see a grossly overweight freak pluggin iMAC b.s. I'd bring a mirror to best buy and hang around the wrong sections;-)
I agree they're common but my laptop, Nintendo DS and 17" LCD all have no dead pixels.
Though I had to go through three DSes for a friend [was a present] before I found one without a dead pixel [they exchanged them without hesitation] and my brothers new laptop had a shiny red pixel at the bottom [which they replaced without question either].
The trick is to shop retail. They usually have very decent replacement policies [specially BestBuy/Futureshop] and keep your receipts and boxes.
With LCD monitors I ask for them to try it in store before I bring it home. We go through various full screen solids [R,G,B then mixes] and check for dead pixels, etc... No sense leaving the store with a defective monitor;-)
Even assuming the trip cost the company $2000 [which is possible but I doubt it]. At ~45 people [and most buses are packed from what I see] paying say $50-$75 each [promo prices, I paid more cuz I didn't fit in one their promos which actually I expect many wouldn't] That's still roughly $800 profit per trip. Given that 800 > 0 I'd say it's a good business model.
Though a quick google seems to indicate they're doing fairly sour recently. Could be that everyone is using planes instead of buses.
So congrats airlines CEOs, not only are your businesses going south but you're pulling others with you!

If I'm not mistaken the AVR mcu's didn't require any external clock either.
A "clockless design" really means a circuit in which you don't drive a clock signal down the pipeline. Also known as an "asynchronous design".

Yes, it is. Except to file complaint you have to admit you were trying to download a "pirated audio file".
