There's plenty of documentation out there for MySQL. Seems like the last thing we need is another MySQL book.

How about a PostgreSQL book? I stopped using MySQL awhile ago for my high traffic site, as its lack of features (subqueries, views, triggers) proved insufficient. Postgres rocks!

  9. Beware of UFS on Unix File System Issues on Mac OS X? · · Score: 2, Informative

My advice: Do *NOT* use UFS on Mac OS X unless you are running a server. If you plan on using applications besides Apache or database software, use HFS+. I bought a new Powerbook several months ago and went with UFS, assuming it would be faster, superior, etc. I found that many programs (even Mozilla!) would not run on UFS. They'd simply crash or spit out strange error messages. After getting frustrated, I reinstalled using HFS+. I was *AMAZED* at the speed difference. It really is a lot faster: Apps load faster, file copying is faster, everything just seems more responsive. And, I no longer have trouble with software such as Mozilla, Toast Titanium, Dreamweaver, etc.

The bottom line: Stick with HFS.

  10. Slashdot good for the Science community? on NASA to Investigate Hydrinos · · Score: 1

There's an active study group of several hundred users (including some prominent scientists) devoted to debating the possible existence of hydrinos. In many ways it sprang from slashdot.

While I lack the knowledge to state wheather or not that's a true statement, I'm glad that Slashdot is making waves in the scientific community - even if they are small waves.

As for the usability of OSX... my only suggestion is to hide apps you're not using. You can set the dock to show hidden apps with transparent icons with TinkerTool.

Intel didn't go after Apple because Apple isn't a big threat to Intel. Apple doesn't make the G4, Motorola does :)

Perhaps with proper legislation, "leech computing" will become less of a problem...

  18. You want OSX? Buy a Mac. on Cringely: OS X on Intel · · Score: 1

I've always been a PC person. However, not too long ago I saw the light. I was in the market for a laptop. Apple's Titanium Powerbook, at 1" thick with a 15.2" display, struck me as the best notebook on the market, and I bought it.

The hardware is incredible. OSX is incredible. My Mac runs Windows 2K faster than my Duron 650 does. Plug my intellimouse and 19" monitor into the powerbook, and I can run OSX on one display, and W2K on the other. (Virtual PC).

I don't think apple should bring OSX to X86. I'm not trying to be flamebait, but ... if you want the software, buy the well-tuned hardware to go with it. They work so incredibly nice together...

Mod me as flaimbait if you wish, but Microsoft should NOT have to supply the source code. Isn't it OBVIOUS that they're lying? So obvious in fact, that the source code isn't even needed - nobody needs the glory of proving them wrong.

Instead, Why doesn't a judge order them to either remove IE from future versions of Winblowz, or fix the old ones, even if it means rewriting half of the source.

Making them give up the source code into uknown and probably insecure hands isn't fair. No software company - even M$ - should have to give up their source code, even if they're lying pieces of you know what.
