Ren and Stimpy (And John K) Returning?

An Anonymous reader writes "The comedy duo Ren and Stimpy will be returning to our TV screens on TNN. Seems John Kricfalusi, the creator of Ren and Stimpy, has inked a deal with TNN to show old episodes, new episodes and at least one never release episode which Nickelodeon squashed because it was too violent." Here's hoping that its true- I wonder if John K will reclaim Ren's voice from Billy West.

The changes come four months after Viacom Co., parent of MTV Networks, formalized its purchase of TNN's parent, CBS Inc., for roughly $50 billion.

Yesterday, Scannell made his first-ever trip to Nashville, meeting with employees for about an hour and 45 minutes. Hall began the meeting with an emotional farewell.

Since May, CMT, TNN's all-country-music sibling, has been run from New York by VH-1 executives. CMT will see no changes and will not pick up programming TNN discards, officials said yesterday.

TNN will unveil new, original programs next year, including movies and reality-based shows. By 2005, Scannell said, 50% of TNN content will be original.

TNN also will increase its ties to CBS, the only major broadcast network without a news or sports cable companion. In March, TNN may broadcast some NCAA tournament games, Robina said.

Some changes at TNN will be instant. A new logo will make its debut next week. And one of cable's highest rated programs -- the World Wrestling Federation's Raw Is War -- will switch to TNN, beginning Monday at 8 p.m. A show that will not be renewed is "Crashed", a sitcom one about the travails of bearded computer nerds who live in their parents' basements and pine over their imaginary girlfriends.

The change from The Nashville Network to the new TNN (aka USA network clone) had little to do with them ditching their programming. No, seriously. The change followed their acquisition by Viacom, which owns MTV, Nick, Paramount, Showtime, The Movie Channel, Simon & Schuster, (most) Six Flags theme parks, CBS, and god knows what else they've acquired while I was typing that out.

Viacom simply shifted all their "hit" (cough) shows over to their country channel (the name of which escapes me, but I just woke up and haven't had coffee, so forgive me), which left them with a whole channel to populate with Viacom-owned media.

Also keep in mind that the idiots who ruined Nick are most likely still employed within Viacom, promoted even (politics there are the worst I've ever seen), and may yet start meddling with TNN - it's still young enough in the Viacom realm that the nogoodniks want nothing to do with it (might result in failure, much like Nick was before it got established - then they latched on).

BTW, Viacom lives and dies by focus group tested. Everything, on every level, gets focus group testing. Like a lot of people here on Slashdot, I watched Ren & Stimpy as a young teenager and it was the first show that I really enjoyed that I couldn't explain. It was sort of the modern art of Nickelodeon cartoons. There is something there you like and you're not completely sure why because you don't completely get it. John will be doing Ren's voice, of course. I don't know if they'll get Billy in to do Stimpy; there may be just too much bad blood between them for that to happen.

Some of the old crew is back, mixed with younger blood - boards and rough layout are being done by Vince Waller and Eddie Fitzgerald; Richard Pursell is doing a lot of the scripting along with John. The show will be as anarchic and taboo-breaking as you remember it being; TNN seems to be a bit looser in what they'll let John get away with, as it's bound for prime-time instead of kiddie cartoon zone.

As to the person who mentioned the old deal with Icebox, I believe that disintegrated when Icebox went belly-up.

I still have it, and most other episodes on tapes, though the quality is only fair, due to gain problems over cable (areas of Nick's bright orange would have snow and create a buzz in the sound.) MTV at least carried mostly original, though I've never seen the scene in Big House Blues where Ren drinks from the toilet (though it's in the show opening sequence.)

Viacom blew it when they let Nick have control over R & S, which really didn't belong there in the first place. Ren & Stimpy belonged in a late night slot, like Bevis and Butthead, as their appeal was more late-teens, and older, particularly those episodes (Space Madness, Marooned) which parody old space serials from the 50's (which little kids wouldn't have any idea what's being parodied.)

The full, uneditted R&S would be instantly a part of my DVD collection, if it were available (not chopped up versions suitable to pea-brained Nick execs.) Cartoons after the departure of John K. are only marginally funny, often sophomoric and dull.

John's really a pretty cool guy, I had the pleasure to meet him and get a sketch several years ago (Ren screaming at Stimpy, "Get back to woork, you eediot!") I've tried to keep up with what's going on at Spumco, but their site seems to be down, or unaccessible from where I am.
