Oh. I don't personally care about that, but I can see your point. It isn't a tivo problem, it's a cable card problem and when (if?) they introduce 2-way cards, Tivo will support them
What's wrong with the Tivo series 3, other than the price? It takes cable card (no cable box!), has 2 tuners, records HD, works with Comcast in WA (I'm doing it right now).
It is pricey, but it was worth the cost just to ditch the lame ass Comcast DVR
Sony did many things wrong with the PS2, there's no way it will be #1... it'll probably be #2 or even #3. The reason the PSX is so cool and successful is that it appeals to EVERYONE, not just a select crowd of people. PlayStation2 will be stuck in the middle between Dreamcast and Dolphin... the only thing that it won't have between DC and Dolphin is the price... PS2 will be the most expensive of the three.
Being an early adopter to any new game system is frustrating. Even Wii, with all the hype, is suffering badly from a shortage of new games.
Motorstorm is fantastic, and Oblivion is pretty neat, but I spend more time playing PS2 games than PS3 ones for now. GTA really is the one game I'm waiting most for.
The OS is ok, but it definitely gives the feeling of a work in progress. I have noticed that they don't announce everything that goes into the updates, for example, their Javascript and CSS support in the built-in web browser improved during one of the updates and I heard nary a peep about it anywhere. Sort of a strange take on underpromise/overdeliver, but I'll take it.
Linux works well enough on it, but I've been running Folding when I'm not gaming, so I don't really have a strong opinion about that. Maybe if someone gets a Cell accelerated Mesa going, I'll actually boot it more often.
Oh, and he's right about the noise. As in, there is none. At all.
I've only watched one Blu-ray movie, which was 5th Element, known to be a particularly bad example, so I can't say much about that aspect.
It's really quite an impressive machine, if a little on the big and heavy side. Once the 3rd parties start to deliver, it'll be much more sensible a purchase. I'm just a sucker for new toys:)
The lead Resistance: Fall of Man developer (or someone like that) had some high praise for the Unreal engine (particularly the streaming textures feature) which is responsible for a lot of what games that game look as nice as it does. Always refreshing when developers are honest about their competition.
Take as much salt as you like, I'm not making shit up. But it's a valid question. How exactly have they could have done it years ago? Which system did they have that was powerful enough, popular enough, and networked in order to take advantage of it? Only Wii, and that system is brand new.
"I think they've definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they're pushing in a different direction and we've sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here. I think theres is very much a vision that people see it and it looks cool but it's fundamentally separate from the games - or at least what they've shown so far," Satchell continued. "It's a cool world but it's like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; it's that games are the center and that's the star of the show, that's what people buy the console for."
Not exactly a condemnation. Statements like "it looks cool" and "pushing in a different direction" imply that they're admitting that it's a good idea. Everything else in there is spin.
"This is an example of Sony's 'Mii-too' approach," said a Nintendo spokesperson to CVG. "But as Mr. Miyamoto states, Nintendo years ago considered and rejected the type of approach Sony is now taking."
Oh really? "Years ago" huh? On what exactly, the Gamecube with it's 25 users? The DS with it's SNES level graphics? Even the Wii would be a stretch to pull it off, although they probably could have if they'd chosen to, but they did not. Why exactly did Nintendo reject an immersive world for a bare-bones cartoony poor man's version with little actual value to the player?
I'd expect a lot more harsh criticism if they honestly weren't jealous. You never come right out and say "damn, I wish we had what they have", but that's about as close as it gets.
Other than Heavenly Sword and FF13 (which will be ported, they announced it), I don't sense any anticipation to speak of for the rest of that list.
Are you shitting me? No anticipation for MGS4? That's probably the biggest system seller I mentioned.
And although Nintendo and Microsoft feigned "who needs it, what we have is good enough" when Home was announced, between the lines was quite a bit of penis envy and the press was drooling all over Sony's new baby.
LittleBigPlanet is a coup. That by any measure should have been a Wii game, but PS3 stole it. The anticipation there is enormous.
please, anyone can make a list of those ps3-seller games?
Exclusive material that people are very excited for, most if not all of which is expected this year:
Motorstorm (already out) Metal Gear Solid 4 Killzone Heavenly Sword FF13 (despite recent headlines, 13 and 13vs are still PS3 exclusive for now) Lair Afrika LittleBigPlanet Home
And others coming down the line, like the next Gran Turismo and Tekken games
And there's games such as GTA4, Assassin's Creed, Katamari 3. People talk about a lack of exclusivity as if it's no longer available on the first platform. That's just stupid. The fact that a game is going to be available elsewhere doesn't mean it's not going to sell tremendously well on the PS3, and many people will buy one just to play their favorite franchise because it's what they're familiar with. Not to mention that it IS a better machine, and there's a good chance that multiplatform games will look nicer on the PS3. This has happened already with Oblivion.
cutting the price at this point wouldn't help game sales enough to offset the extra loss they'd be taking on each unit, because the library is still pretty sparse. might as well suck it up and sell whatever units are selling. when the really good games start coming out later this summer and fall, sales will pick up and I wouldn't be surprised to see a november cut of about $100
What scares me is irrational people who ascribe human traits to inanimate objects. There's no such thing as an "assault rifle", just assault humans.
It's not a "human trait", it's an adjective.
And other use cases aside, things are often named for their original intent, such as "steak knives". Doesn't mean you can't eat chicken with one. When was the last time you saw someone use a SUV for "sport utility"?;)
Sony doesn't announce what is coming in the Thursday update ahead of time, but speculation is that some or all of Calling All Cars, Super Rub-a-Dub, and the Home beta are coming out this week.
not everyone's got the time and rarely anyone has the need. don't be a gentoo user.
That's pretty ignorant. Few if any pieces of software have the number of compile time options as the Linux kernel. Even if you module-ize everything you possibly can, there are still many choices you make that you are bound to, such as IO schedulers and pre-empting.
Any serious Linux user is capable of and knows the value of compiling their own kernel.
Accessibility. Could you see your average non-geek using "RPGMaker" or "Pinball Wizard"? Clamor all you like about the superiority of PC gaming, but that type of thing is NOT mainstream.
Sony isn't inventing this concept, certainly, but making user-created content a quick-and-easy thing *is* a new concept. Other examples are Spore and Line Rider
I know Apple is all trendy and hipster-friendly, but I'm much more excited for the OpenMoko platform.
this is ice forty two
The cablecards cost half as much as the box (same price then, when you get 2) for me
But not everything is about using the cheapest solution.
Since ESPN has decided that hockey doesn't exist, I have no use for them, so I don't know if I get it or not.
I'm not sure I understand your question, but I can record, for example, Discovery HD without the use of a cable box.
Oh. I don't personally care about that, but I can see your point. It isn't a tivo problem, it's a cable card problem and when (if?) they introduce 2-way cards, Tivo will support them

This guy's take on MS-on-Comcast is right on. It's been nothing short of godawful.

Let it not be overlooked that 2.0 includes "Finch", which is a text mode IM client! (instant messaging in screen)++
I've been using CenterICQ for a couple years, but after trying the last beta of Finch (was gaim-text at the time), I'm sold. It's really slick.

Why should I trust you? I can read.
