    fwiw, I decided to break an old /. tradition, and read TFA. And I'll agree that TFA is somewhat breathless about "we've wondered for centuries", or whatever. So I withdraw my snark at your snark. I apologize if changing my mind upon review seems un-american.

    Missouri Compromise f'rinstance had nothing to do with Europe. It had all to do with extending slavery. The actions of the slave-holdering states a decade or two before the CW is proof to me what the primary reason for the war was. Of course they'll support states rights, 'cause it'll let them keep their slaves. Of course they'll trot out economic reasons, 'cause it'll let them keep their slaves. As an aside, slave-holding is one of the main reasons that the Roman Republic fell after civil war.

    Specifically, we learned that Enceladus has a large subsurface ocean, at the bottom of which may lie hydrothermal vents. Since those on Earth are often teeming with life, we didn't want to risk contamination of Enceladus' oceans.

    Really, they didn't want the Enceladusians to capture our technology.

    Anything to delay the inevitable misunderstanding when they discover Mexican food.
