But then I think MS is COPYRIGHTING the technique used. So for older versions of SMB, MS can't do anything,. But if they come with something NEW, like a modified POP3, they can copyright that software and you're back to square one...
TO QWEST CUSTOMERS
Be advised, I just contacted a local ISP (EStreet, although there are quite a few in Denver) and an excerpt from their response is as follows
If you are currently with Qwest as your ISP, you "should" just be able to
call them and request an ISP change to E Street (or whatever ISP you like)...
The trouble may come if they have already switched you over to MSN. If they
have done this, you may have to totally cancel your MSN service and then
re-order service with us. It looks like MSN actually "owns" the DSL service
and they won't allow any transfers to other ISP's.
The implication being that you would have to disconnect your _DSL_ and go through reconnecting, back to the 3-week process. This may not be right, it's from another ISP, but it doesn't seem like anyone inside Qwest knows the answer either...
The more star systems will slip through your fingers...

This has been rumored for some time. One can escape assimilation by paying an extra $10/month and going to OfficeWorks, although rumor ALSO has it that even OfficeWorks won't be safe from the Evil Empire.
Someone mentioned getting around this. The problem is the DMCA. As I understand it, it's now illegal to do that kind of reverse engineering, i.e. the type that allowed *nix users to connect to SMB via Samba. So basically, through emrbrace and extend, MS can technically and legally exclude non-conformists.
To switch ISPs requires a 3-week downtime. This is done to eliminate the "slamming" phenonemon that plagued Long Distace carriers. I being one of the "renegades" running an alternative OS, have been looking into alternatives.
The problem is that I work from home (so I have between 3-5 machines networked into a DSL line) and it would create no small problem if I were to have to connect via modem for 3 weeks. Although given the alternative, I may be purchasing a modem...
Say's who? The only flashy toys and gimmicks are those obnoxious "flash" ads... It's amazing how much more I enjoy surfing without Flash installed. *aaahhhhhh*
The only people who want that crap are the marketing drones who think it helps them get "clicks"...
Doens't this sound a bit like when BT came out and said that they had the hyperlink patented about 2 years ago? Now we have IBM with THIS move of genius... I think someone should write a paper showing how these 2 patents overlap one another. Let these 2 bumbling fools beat on each other for a while in the courts.
Software patents are bad ideas, always have been. I hope Europe doesn't succumb to these little devices of the devil.
After all, you can't REALLY have fun until you have some underpaid patent clerk making decisions that result in huge lawsuits which are appealed until the end of time with nobody truly winning...
Sun is doing just that, the spec is called JAX-RPC and it's in the formative stages. I wouldn't expect too much from them just yet...
There is another spec called JAXM (Java / XML Messaging) which is more mature - version.94. I don't know enough about it right now, but at least we know that Sun is working on it. I'm hoping that they do a better job than what we saw with early EJB specs.
I'd think that Sun would integrate it into JMS (or at least J2EE). Even if they didn't and left it seperate, I wouldn't bitch, I think platform is getting to big anyway. I'd almost rather just have the foundation classes and then download jars as needed...
Dude, I have NO idea what the story is in DFW. In Denver, the "bitches" are just that... MCSE (My Career is Still Endangered) are a dime a dozen and treated as such.
Even though the ecomony is tough, Java skills are still good (even better are Java/Unix/Oracle). Any kind of sys-admin is tough, but I'd rather be a *nix sysadmin that anything else. $$$ wise, that is.
If you're going.net, don't go to far, I smell blood. A LOT of BIG, BIG promises are being made. At some point MS has to deliver a system that works as advertised -enterprise scalability, speed, reliability.
Yeah, wouldn't want to be at the client explaining why the project was working as promised
I'm a qwest DSL user. I've been pretty happy b/c I'm running a Linux box and a couple servers and they don't really care. My IP is stable if there's no power loss at the modem, etc...
BUT, I was NOT amused at this. i can only assume that MSN was NOT planning on offering any kind of Linux support (since you have to run their d@mn virusware to connect).
A little notices item on the FAQ is that if you're not running Windows, you're not eligable! They only mention Mac by name, but when I called to ask, they told me I wasn't eligable.:( You mean I don't have Uncle Bill watching over my shoulder! Curses!
Apparently they send you an e-mail asking you to convert and you reply telling them you're not eligable!
Whew, i was starting to look for other ISPs...
Great, so I'm a Linux user on qwest.net dsl. I'm sure they have sw which runs on Linux! Yeah, maybe NOT. Why do they need this sw anyway?
Can you say - Big Brother?
So they're monitoring my actions using sw that isn't compatible with my OS. At least they'll be selling my personal info to 3rd parties. Unless I opt out on some obscure page which I have to re-opt out of every quarter.
I think I have the username I want: irritated@EvilEmpire.net

People want flashy gimmicks and toys on sites
