I have a cell phone from Nextel... I really like the direct connect feature and once I switched to nextel, my phone bill dropped $100 because my girlfriend (now fiance) has a nextel phone and all the little calls (ie. want to get together for lunch?, I'm on my way home, etc...) really added up.
I understand Nextel has some problems with coverage in certain areas in the US and I'm not sure about other countries but I live in PA, USA and often travel to NJ (both northern parts and southern parts) with no problems.
My only gipe is the fact that you have to call them to get the most current, better rate plan. My experiences are that as long as you are staying with your company (in my case nextel) then you can just call them and get the better rate plan. -Chris
I saw this coming since they expected everyone to buy at least 30 games in order to break even on each console sold. How many people do you know that buy 30 games at $50 a pop? Not many college students that I know... I don't even have that many ps2 games (and that's my only console)
The ps2 on the other hand is a lot cheaper to produce because it's all done in house. The initial cost is great but for a company like sony, having a production line and their own chip making machines, it pays off in the long run because they can match Microsofts price and still break even whereas M$ is losing money. -Chris
Of course if you want something more than something.dyndns.org you have to pay a little more but since it's just for personal use I really don't care if it's not something.com. -Chris
p.s. I'm going to try this at home on my 192.168.0.x domain thus I don't need a fixed IP because I made my own.
This is all well and good but if it plans to be a production vehicle it may run into problems other than just tipping over. Motorcycles in the US have decided to self regulate the top speed to 185 because of some controversy over the top speed race that Suzuki and Kawasaki were in with the GSX1300 and ZX-12. I think the GSX1300 did 189 but then after the debacle it now does 185.
Also due to the 3 wheel design, I can't imagine it would be very stable at such high speeds.
It's really a pipe dream, if it does come about, there will be very few of them and they will be very expensive, not run very well and no one will want them after the first year or two after the novelty wears off. -Chris
I got vlc a while ago and they required that I change my display colors to thousands of colors instead of millions. I don't know if it's still a bug or not but that worked. That said...
I also saw an article somewhere a while ago (don't know where exactly) that talked about flashing my tiBooks firmware to make it regionless... I was a little concerned about the validity of the firmware but it worked like a charm.
I did all this on my powerbook G4 667 with the dvd player. Your mileage may vary.
http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/ is where I got the stuff. -Chris
Don't forget that the addition of a bigram or a trigram model (using sets of 2 or 3 word pairs) would increase the probability of detecting spam a lot. Granted it taked more computing to determine this but on texts as small as an e-mail, a bigram model at least would be very helpful at getting things like "act now" or "limited offer" and such. This is a really good idea, let's hope most mail programs impliment something like this. -Chris
p.s. I've used Apple's e-mail program on Jaguar and I must say it's really good at catching spam. It has to learn at first but it was pretty good right out of the box. Incorrectly identified some of my mailing lists that I wanted but I just clicked on Not Junk and it fixes it. I'm not sure what they are using to identify spam but it's been pretty good so far. I just check it every once in a while to make sure.
Well lets see... red hat has one, debian has one... I'm sure others do as well, they just happen to be the ones I'm familiar with. Do some research next time before you shoot your mouth off. -Chris
um I think you're gonna have to make your own news site if you want that. This site is news for nerds and because of that you will have some bias towards certain things (such as linux).
Go to cnn and tell them to stop being so negative when some nutcase kills a bunch of people and they call it a tradgedy... that's bias. If you don't like it go to MSNBC to get more of a M$ slant on things. -Chris
I've used linux since High School (~7 years ago) and no one really had broadband then (though I remember when ISDN came out and I really wanted it).
Just because you don't spend enough time on the internet for you to justify the cost of broadband doesn't make us rich that we can just throw our money away on broadband. I certainly didn't have UNIX in college when I first started using linux because I was still in High School. In fact UNIX classes at my college was a joke when I took it. (For some reason we spend 1/2 the term doing java)
Most linux users have broadband because they use the internet a lot. Imagine that... you can actually buy linux distributions on cd for very little... let's see... Debian (my fav. distro) on linuxcentral.com... 7 discs... $14.95 and you don't need to download anything. Then you can set up a PPP connection (which I did in High School) to an ISP and set up to download upgrades before you go to sleep. You don't need broadband for linux, you need broadband if you want to download mp3's, download movies, check your e-mail every minute, check slashdot constantly, play any online game... shall I go on?
Because of the fact that many computer junkies like myself need the internet to get all this information, sources become available to download Linux this way or install linux over a network, but you don't have to.
I still firmly believe the reason that Linux hasn't taken off in the office desktop is because M$ office is not available and M$ users have a hard enough time figuring out excel that they need to have special classes.
and I wouldn't classify Windows 2000 as an average users desktop... I don't know too many "average users" who use it... that would be more like ME or XP. -Chris
From what you are saying, most MS machines don't have this level of security because it requires service pack 3 and "People who use Windows are less likely to know-how, or care-to-know-how to install patches for their OS"
and you got modded up to 5?!?!?
If we were to compare this to cars, most people go and get their oil changed, put gas in it, take it to a shop to get it repaired, inspected etc... these are the Mac OS X users...
Linux users are the ones who take the car apart just to see what it looks like.
M$ users are the ones who buy a Porche and then put regular gas in it because premium is too expensive. Then they drive it off the road because they don't know how to drive it.
OS X has a nice feature where it tells you there are upgrades and you click which ones you want and hit install. It then downloads and installs them for you. Why hasn't windows picked up on this? It's easy as pie. -Chris
p.s. but your right most M$ users don't know or care how to use a computer.
I agree, in a perfect world it would be easier. But how many programs have you downloaded that turned out to be incomplete or just plain wrong? Ever download a movie and find out it's not the right one? It can be very difficult at times to find the right one. Also a few hours to download a movie vs. a few minutes to drive somewhere to get it. It all depends on how patient you are. If you want it now go to blockbuster (or similar movie/game rental place) if you don't want to leave you computer just download it... It's all a matter of personal preference. -Chris
People often ask me why I got a linux kit for my ps2... I only tell them that if they have to ask they wouldn't understand.
Also don't you want to screw Microsoft? In order for Microsoft to make any money (or to break even for that matter) they need to sell something like 30 games per xbox user. (They get about $5 per game) Why? Because they are selling the XBox for less than is costs to make. Now say you can get an XBox and install linux (and not buy any games) and you and your friends all do the same and install linux and have fun with it. Microsoft looses a lot of money because you aren't even buying 1 game for the xbox. Therefore Microsoft looses lots of money on the XBox project and then decide to bow out to Sony and Nintendo. It would finally be a place where Microsoft has failed.
That is what I would do... just to screw MS.
However, those screen shots look kindof hokey and I don't actually see linux booting, just one line at the top. Anyone actually get it to work?
Oh that wasn't a joke? Please, I originally started on a Commadore 64, then I got a 286 with just dos. Then a 386 and I remember getting windows 3.0. Then a 486 and windows 3.1 and then I remember getting 3.11. (around this time I was introdced to Linux and I've had at the very least a dual boot machine ever since) Then I went to college and got myself an AMD K6 and got pissed off at Windows even more and started using linux more often but I still wasn't ready to make the switch. Now (a couple other computers thrown in there) I learned LaTeX so I didn't need to use office (for Word) and I'me completely M$ free. The only halfway decent OS that Windows makes is Win2k but why use it when linux is so much faster? In fact in order to run windows well you need a pretty fast machine and I have a few old machines lying around that linux runs great on.
As to me being and OS/2, Amiga or Mac lover let me put that idea to rest. My uncle had an Amiga and I thought it was kindof neat but never owned one, I hated macs pre OSX but now that they run *NIX I have a tiBook laptop with OSX. (And no Windows anywhere)
Now if you ask me about windows I can tell you all about there crappy software and how they won't let you actually use your own computer without their OK... Does this make me a zealot? Heck if I could find a way to convince everyone I know to abandon windows I would. In fact I stopped helping my friends with their windows machines when they brake. Anytime someone asks I just say I don't do windows... but if you want I'll help you with Linux. So I say F^%$ M$, use linux, but I can tell you why and my distaste for M$ grew from using their products. -Chris
But if you look at it, it is comparing Windows to Mac... and not even a current mac...

Ok, now let's compare linux to Dos.

Obviously you can just delete IE and use mozilla (like I did) It's apparently not an integral part of Mac OS X so why is it in windows?
Interestingly enough I remember seeing a screen shot from apple where in the task bar in the bottom of the screen, it showed mozilla and not IE.
The only thing about osx that bugs me is not being able to set up emacs right... still having issues with function keys and keymaps and such in emacs on osx. At least vi works though. -Chris
Maybe you do but I'm sitting here among 2 Linux boxes and my G4 tiBook. Oh and I don't use office either...
If you want you could also add my ps2 to that list... I now have the linux kit up and running on my ps2. No windows boxes at all. Heck, I've even tried to convince my grandparents to switch. (I think my grandpop is close)
I'm beginning to wonder if Microsoft isn't employing people to infect slashdot by posting pro-microsoft material. It goes something like this...
I'm completely microsoft free except... where linux isn't even close.
You comment that you would like to see what someone who has actually used Chinese input on windows and linux implying that you yourself haven't. This makes you just as bad as the people telling you to RTFM or search google. There is a lot of BS that get's thrown around slashdot (quite a bit of which gets modded up) and yours just adds to it. I believe the person said they want nothing to do with windows, and I don't blame them. Heck, I learned LaTeX so I didn't have to use Office, but that's just me. How about when you learn to use Chinese input on Linux you compare them then ok? Until then shutup, if I want to hear windows advertising I'll call a MS rep.
Now I don't know Chinese or Japanese or any other language with a different character set but there was a grad student in one of my classes who used linux exclusively and used an oriental language (not sure which I think Chinese though) Also I remember reading articles how Linux is really cathing on in China.... must be an easy way for them to input Chinese if it's catching on huh? -Chris
Well if switched kindof... I had a pc (linux... not windows) and now I have a tiBook... but I still have my pc. I like UNIX and I hate windows. I tell all my friends that I won't help them with their windows problems anymore but I will help them with OS X or Linux... I now get very few questions because my friends running OS X don't need help because they don't have any problems and my linux friends don't have too many questions after they get started. It's amazing though... I still get requests for help with windows... I of course reply with "I have an extra Debian install disc that will fix that pesky windows problem" -Chris I will never switch... only try new things.
Not true, if you have a company supply linux installed pc's with all the software you need then it won't need any support because it runs a heck of a lot better than windows. I recently switched to linux (and mac os x) exclusively and now when I go to the computer labs at school I get frustrated at how buggy and slow windows can be. (and it's not the hardware) And rebooting may solve you problems with windows but the time rebooting can be better spent doing other things... I don't reboot my Linux machine unless I install a new kernel. If you hire 1 IT person for linux support, there is a wealth of information on the web and one person can handle it because most of the time linux runs quite smoothly. -Chris
So what your saying is People outside of North America and Europe are too stupid to use open source software and should therefore be forced to use windows? That is the biggest load of Sh!@ I have ever heard. Have you ever installed Red Hat?!?!? It's the easiest install I have ever seen... in fact the newer versions are easier to install than windows. If these countries are setting up networks and installing windows then I think they can install Linux. So just because the Zambian Census Agency hired incompotent IT personel doesn't mean everyone is incompotent. I seriously believe you could teach a monkey to install Red Hat...
I think you need to push a pin into that inflated ego of yours. If you can teach people to use windows then you can teach them to use linux in just the same ammount of time. -Chris
gee... you are a goober... RMS is Richard Stallman, Free Software promoter (to say the least) and a whole lot more. He's done a lot and google has a little section on him. Read more at: http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/History/ Pioneers/Stallman,_Richard/?tc=1 -Chris
I tend to agree with you on this. When Lucas did the original trilogy (SW, Empire, and Jedi) he was a student of Joseph Campbell's and was writing a STORY deeply intwined with the monomyth.
Now with ILM at his side, he is placing much more emphasis on the CGI stuff. There is still much of the monomyth in Eps I, just as I'm sure there is in Eps II, but THERE WERE NO FART JOKES IN THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY... Jar-Jar is one big fart joke and hugely deminished the quality of the movie.
The original trilogy had no Fart jokes, instead it was a much more serious movie. If the original trilogy was comprised of fart jokes it would have gone away never to be heard of again like the D&D movie, another huge fart joke. In order for a fart joke movie to be funny, the whole thing needs to be funny... ie. Shrek.
But now I ramble... I should go get ready... I'm going to go see a special charity screening of Eps. II. So for all of you watching a low-res version on your computer:-p I'm gonna go see it on the big screen. -Chris
Ummm... it's one thing to make it look like it runs on OS X it's another thing to optimize it and get all of the features working on os x. I'm sure adobe wanted make photoshop on x to be as nice as possible and as fast as possible because you only get one chance to make a first impression. The fact is, they've had the Beta out for a while now and have been working on it... it's wasn't just sitting around waiting to be shipped. If that was the case I think we would have a more specific release date don't you? This is adobe's flagship app, I think they want to make it run great before releasing it.
-Chris
I have a 6 Meg limit on my mailbox at yahoo. My big gripe was when they took away availability of checking it via an external mail reader.
However, if you don't mind checking it via a web browser, it's fine. The SpamGuard feature is really nice.
-Chris
I saw this coming since they expected everyone to buy at least 30 games in order to break even on each console sold. How many people do you know that buy 30 games at $50 a pop? Not many college students that I know... I don't even have that many ps2 games (and that's my only console)

-Chris
I can comment on both vlc and RegionX.

Don't forget that the addition of a bigram or a trigram model (using sets of 2 or 3 word pairs) would increase the probability of detecting spam a lot. Granted it taked more computing to determine this but on texts as small as an e-mail, a bigram model at least would be very helpful at getting things like "act now" or "limited offer" and such. um I think you're gonna have to make your own news site if you want that. This site is news for nerds and because of that you will have some bias towards certain things (such as linux).

If you can teach people to use windows then you can teach them to use linux in just the same ammount of time.

gee... you are a goober... RMS is Richard Stallman, Free Software promoter (to say the least) and a whole lot more. He's done a lot and google has a little section on him. Read more at: http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/History/ Pioneers/Stallman,_Richard/?tc=1

I tend to agree with you on this. When Lucas did the original trilogy (SW, Empire, and Jedi) he was a student of Joseph Campbell's and was writing a STORY deeply intwined with the monomyth.
:-p I'm gonna go see it on the big screen.
II. So for all of you watching a low-res version on your computer

Ummm... it's one thing to make it look like it runs on OS X it's another thing to optimize it and get all of the features working on os x.
You mean like the release date of TOMORROW? Before you comment, check your info.
