    They're patenting the replacement of 'do-nothing' virtual functions at runtime. This isn't new and it is certainly obvious to practitioners of the art of programming.

    I thought the Supreme Court had done away with this sort of nonsense?

    I still don't understand what makes algorithms and software OBVIOUSLY not patentable.

    Some algorithms (like RSA) are really smart and clever and do deserve patent protection (the length of protection can and should be discussed). But bloody silly algorithms like 'one click' and all the avalanche of pathetic patents on well-used and obvious programming techniques should rightly now be shown the door.

    Well yea, I've been supplementing vitamin D for a few years now. (I do D, selenium and alpha lipoic acid plus lots of veggies, fish and red wine) But I also think there are psychological benefits to sun exposure.

    The cancers are different and have different risks. As the article says, by limiting exposure to sunlight you're trading skin cancer (which is easily detected, quite easily treated and often not fatal) for the scarier cancers like bowel cancer which are implicated in a lot more deaths.

    With a subscription service you're not just renting individual songs, but the entire catalog. That's the advantage of it.

    The comparison with renting an apartment would be if you had access to a million different apartments for the rental cost and could choose to stay in a different one every night.

    Actually, no. Use ArrayList and synchronize access to it where needed in your code. The synchronization in Vector is a very blunt tool.

    The M-Audio 2496 is pretty cheap and has excellent ADC/DAC and not bad op-amps. It gives a very nice line-out into a hifi (I run my through a Quad 303 for monitoring on my desktop).

    For the ultimate hifi upgrade, get a Benchmark DAC and run it from the SPDIF of the M-Audio. Superb audio quality.

    I've just blown all the moderation I done here, but I can't resist.

    I also have work on US, FR, DE and CH keyboards. Just set the damn OS to US layout and don't look at the keys! You spend less time working out where %,$,_, etc is on a CH keyboard set to US than you do actually changing from CH to US.

    Of course you can. If an IPTV company is willing to pay for higher QOS then they can accomplish that with local caching solutions like Akamai. There's more of an argument for non-NN with low-latency applications like VOIP and games. But these aren't enough to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

    As for your kids hogging your bandwidth - there are any number of technical and social solutions to maintaining QOS through your own internet connection that needn't affect anybody else.

    Python has poor multithreading performance (last time I looked, maybe they've fixed the 'global interpreter' problem) which limits its use for certain kinds of server applications. Java is very slick and reliable at the same sort of apps.

    It wouldn't help. Your downloads probably use OMA1 Forward Lock DRM, where the the file is tied to the handset (by asking the handset nicely). This is achieved mainly by encrypting the file with a 'hidden' key tied to the handset or by restricting copies from the internal storage.

    Passing up business strategies that increase shareholder value (not necessarily short-term profits) is irrational behavior for a company director. If the directors gave up selling their pipe stuff and played golf all day on expenses do you think the shareholders wouldn't sue as the stock price plunged?

    In English common law a company has a fiducary duty to act in the best interests of the shareholders.Maximizing the NPV (net present value) of a company is definitely in the best interests of the shareholders.

    If an NPV analysis of the switch to banner ads shows a clear benefit (not at all certain!) they have to do it or risk a lawsuit.

    But if they can make more money (or more accurately if the increase of the company's NPV is greater) from random banner ads than their core business then they have a legal duty to their shareholders to do so.

    It's off by default on WMP 10, but I just checked WMP 9 on a Windows 2000 machine and it was on. The option hasn't been changed since install (I wouldn't dream of ripping with WMP).

    There are still quite a few Windows 2000 machines out there and they can't run WMP 10.

    I shouldn't have said 'major', that's far too stringent. The point I was making, though, is that many breakthroughs are made by scientists just 'doing their job' (even though they're probably devoted to it), and maybe it's better to have 10 working scientists than 1 retired rockstar scientist.

    Is anti-aging science or engineering...?
