Here's basically how things work in the US. Assuming this would be distributed by a pharmaceutical company, and goes through the same process:
    • Company submits a New Drug Application to the FDA
    • The FDA evaluates the NDA on their schedule; this is a long schedule
    • If it's approved, the product goes through Phase I trials- basically lab work, test various interractions, effects, possible side effects
    • Phase II- Animal testing
    • Phase III- Human testing
This is a process that takes years, and I don't see it getting any shorter. A few years ago Wyeth got hit hard with the whole Phen-Phen (sp) fiasco. Even with all the required testing, problems can slip past, and it hurts the company when this happens, so getting new medical technology to market too quickly could result in people dying from side effects, and the company isn't going to take that risk (even if they weren't bound by FDA regs).

I may be missing something. I interned at a Pharmaceutical company many years ago, and I was amazed at the paper trail for new products.

With the headphones on, I tend not to notice the ring or light, but having some's name and picture appear in the center of my screen is hard to miss.

Still seems like it's got potential outside of us freakish Mac users. The number and variety of wireless devices is only going to grow, and unless you want a USB dongle for every single one (or Manufacturer), you need a standard short-range wireless protocol.

When I was hired a few years ago my company purchased a G4/400 (rev. 1) for me to use, partially since we design web-based software and there was no QA for Mac users.

Two years later and I was ready for a Powerbook(17). So now I come in every day, connect my Ethernet, monitor, keyboard, etc., connect to the Samba share, and I'm good to go. The company didn't have to make a single change to get my machine working on the network, able to browse the Windows share, or any of the complications the author reports.

I'm sure individual experiences will depend largely on company setup, but I can honestly say I have less day-to-day problems than I've seen with the Windows users.

Now I have no clue how many of those jobs may or may not be lost by this bill, but the fact is, he is voting to protect those jobs. I personally fail to see how it is some great inconvenience to have telemarketers calling you every so often.

While I think you've got a valid point about the jobs, I think it's enough of an inconvenience to merit people losing their jobs.

Telemarketing is a parasitic industry, it's built on aggressively marketing products and services that people generally have no need for. They employ high-pressure sales tactics, are often deceitful, and take advantage of people who don't know any better like my 80-year-old grandmother, which has happened.

If you've ever come home after 10 hours of work & 2 hours of traffic, finally sit down to relax, and are being targeted by multiple companies that know that's the time people are just getting home, that's beyond inconvenient, it's infuriating, hence 50 million peoples' opinions.

Going by your logic, the drug trade employs.. I'm gonna say thousands, but it might be millions, of people. Would your argument hold if these same reps voted against prosecuting this industry too?

I guess my point is, I've gotten enough calls from people I felt had no business contacting me that I'm all out of sympathy for the people actually on the phones. Someone placing bags of dogshit on my porch every morning would also be a 'slight inconvenience', but I'd do everything I could to stop them doing it.

I can't speak to standby time, but I believe it does a fairly good job of power management. When it's running, the drive only spins up as often as it needs to refresh the 32 Meg cache. And when you pause it, it powers itself off after... three minutes? So at that point it's only expending however much energy is necessary to:
    • Power the LCD
    • Save the RAM state
    • Maintain the clock
I tend to skip lots of songs, so I get less playtime because I'm forcing the HD to keep spinning up. But I also have a first version 5Gig and my battery life is barely over an hour at this point. Figures I got a Dr. Bott auto charger last week! When I first got it, I was able to get a solid 10+ hours. I'll have to see how much this update improves things.

At my previous job, my (right) mousing arm was in a very bad position for mousing, and I started getting a significant amount of pain in my wrist. (Would have been less than $100 for a proper mouse tray so I can use a computer for the remainder of my life, cheap bastards)

When I switched jobs, I started using the Imak SmartGlove and my wrist DOES NOT HURT AT ALL ANYMORE. If I type/mouse without one for a few hours, I feel the pain coming back.

The only drawback is wear. If this thing in on my wrist basically all day, it gets dirty. After a few weeks or months (depending on your particular body chemistry), it will start to get a bit rank, and will need to be washed. Just take out the support and throw it in with the laundry.

But drying can shrink them, and the support does weaken over time (although I must say, in the last two years they've made a few design improvements that have worked towards fixing this). So every few months when it's getting worn out, I get a new one at Staples for $15 (large tends to sell out first), and I use the 'old' one at home.

My 2 cents: If you have experienced wrist pain, or want to avoid it, invest in at least one of these. They're well-constructed, a great value, and much less expensive and painful than carpel tunnel surgery.

Buying a few SmartGloves a year? About $30-60. Not having burning wrist pain and weak hands? PRICELESS.
