    they don't talk to babies. The period of time a civilization will use radio is only a few hundred years at most. The period of time a civilization is at the stage where they can relate to us without disrupting our civilization is only a few thousand years. The odds are that there are no other civilization at the right stage within communication distance.

    forever. They were meant to be temporary storage for the used fuel rods. The used fuel rods were then supposed to be transported to a processing plant where plutonium and U235 would be extracted. The leftover waste was to be encased in a long lasting container and shipped to long term storage. That was never done. Now we are stuck with large amount of used fuel rods in storage. Those who advocate for nuclear power need to make sure that the end of the used fuel rod cycle is put in place.

They write them up, give them a NI (Need Improvement) and then fire them. These are people who have being working for decades and never had a bad review.     Burning natural gas is cheaper and it is much cleaner. Its call a win-win.

    they were more expensive to run. The utilities don't really care whether or not the plants pollute. What they care about is how expensive they are to run. Old power plants tend to be less efficient in converting fossil fuel to electricity. The general dispatching rule is that the cheapest power plants go online first until you satisfy the demand. Which means that old power plants only go online during peak demand periods. In fact some may only be on during the weekdays of the summer months. Since you still need them you have to maintain them and they are old so that can get expensive. There comes a point where that does not make sense anymore.
