ESX (currently based on Linux 2.4 kernel) VMware ESX is not based on Linux. ESX is vmware that runs directly on the hardware. ESX does use a version of Red Hat as a management console. It has been said that ESX uses Linux to provide some device drivers. I don't know if this is true as the list of ESX compatible hardware is different then the list of Linux compatible hardware.

VMware Workstation (the "for pay version") has a few advantages over the free versions of VMware Player or Server. Essentially workstation has all the features of Server (creation of new VMs, snapshotting, reconfig of virtual hardware) and Player (faster console access) in one package. VMware Infrastructure (ESX) is a more powerfull version of Server. It generally allows for more virtual servers on the same hardware. ESX also supports SANs and live migration of running VMs.

Apple hardware for the same features is only a little more expensive The problem is that often the features of a Mac are not needed. It is a fallacy to compare a Mac to a Dell or HP with the same features of the Mac. Rather, you need to compare the Mac that meets the user's requirements with the Dell or HP that meets the user's requirements. For example if all the user requires is a computer that can read and send email, browse the Internet, and similar light tasks then even a Mac Mini is expensive. To say that the Mini includes WiFi and Bluetooth is meaningless if the user does not need those features.

  7. Re:VMware or Windows Virtual Server? on Virtualization Is Not All Roses · · Score: 1

The last time I checked VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 had a number of features not found on the Microsoft product such as live migration of virtual machines. I also prefer the VMware management tools. To take advantage of the full VI3 features you should have two or more servers connected to a SAN. This is not inexpensive, but the payoff will be better uptime. Think of it as RAID for servers. Of course you don't need the SAN, but you lose the live migration features. The advantage of VI3 over the free VMware Server is the better performance and management features.

I prefer the VMware tools. They are more mature then Microsoft's. The MS tools will catch up I am sure, but VMware has a couple years head start. VMware also runs Linux better then Microsoft's product.

Because the VMware images are portable across all of the VMware tools, you can develop a server image on your workstation and deploy it onto the production VI3 machines. VMware has a great snapshotting feature. It is great when testing and deploying patches. You take a snapshot of the virtual machine. Boot it in a network isolation mode. Install and test the patch. If it works you either install the patch on the production vm, or just swap the snapshot for the live system. If you time it right there is no downtime.

You may also want to consider XenSource. It is a commercial product based on the open source Xen. The advantages of the commercial product are the management tools and support. Xen is blazing fast.

The only real cost in changing back would be changing back from Mac hardware to PC hardware That is an incredibly naive statement[1]. At a minimum it assumes that a company makes a switch back to Windows almost immediately. Most companies would stick around with a platform for at least a year. Aside from that there are very real internal costs to switching to any platform. There will be costs to reconfigure the servers, retraining for the staff, and overtime or consultants to reinstall Windows. There will be costs just to insure that everything is considered so that there is no staff down time. There will also be licensing issues. If the company does not have a volume license for windows then they are likely using OEM versions of Windows which cannot be installed on other hardware. If they had a volume license then they will need to repurchase it as they likely let it lapse.

[1] if I was a rude bastard I would have written "maybe that is true in your mom's basement but in the rest of the world it is wrong."

You can see a difference between an all digital and mixed digital and analog setup. With a mixed setup there are errors (noise) introduced at each conversion step. The analog to digital conversion in particular, as that step is hard, and it will multiply all of the previous noise. These errors will often show up as pixel ghosting giving the picture a blurry quality or a harsh sharp outline. It can be quite pronounced.

The problems get worst if cheaper analog cables are used. Analog signals are prone to interference and the quality of the cables can have a significant impact on picture quality. In an all digital system most (common) interference will have minimal impact on picture quality. The cheapest of cheap cables can be used with no real difference in picture quality. A really fantastic analog system can probably be as good as an all digital system, but it is unlikely that an expensive analog system can be better then a basic, inexpensive, digital system.

Most people with average eye sight should be able to tell the difference between an all digital system and the same system used in a mixed digital to analog to digital mode.
