Bullshit. As an American I find the entire operation offensive in the extreme. It's nothing more than colonialism, pure and simple, with a good dollop of dick-measuring added in so that King George can prove to the world that his willy is much more impressive than it appears at first glance.
The fact that my own people are such fucking ignoramuses, willing to piss away the very concept of liberty just so they can convince themselves that they're superior to everyone else, is just plain sickening. If it were select individuals acting through the government via coup it would be one thing; but the fact of the matter is is that most of my fellow citizens are becoming more and more Orwellian with each passing day.
To be an American right now is shameful. And the worst thing about it is that the vast majority of Americans *like* how things are going and only wish to shred the Constitution, and the ideals upon which it's based, even more than they've already done. Iraq is just a result of the ever-burgeoning desire for dictatorship, a dictatorship which it appears they wish to impose world-wide.
It's enough to put any sane person off their feed.
So lemme get this straight: we went to war to 'free' the Iraqis so they could have their own democratically elected government, which would in turn craft laws based on the will of the Iraqi people.
Where, exactly, does Fraulein Rosenberg ("sieg heil!") come into this fairy tale story of good triumphing over evil?

In this case the reason they haven't "taken their encoder to the street" is because others have already done it. The results? Vorbis ranked #1 hands down, with AAC near or at the bottom in all tests - *even below mp3s*.
This was for the average listener, which is the only listener that counts when trying to sell things. Apple is making claims about AAC, rather than throwing it to the wolves for comparison, because they already know they'd lose out to Vorbis and the current mp3 standard.
The link for one of the comparison articles is already in this thread, and I think I saw one other. I won't repost here, they're easy enough to locate. Both of the articles are good starting points on comparisons, and IIRC a simple google search will turn up others.
Vorbis is still the best way to go. Unfortunately for Apple, they aren't in a position to make any money off of it.
Off-topic: my entire music library is mp3, not Vorbis. Why? Can you even begin to imagine re-ripping nearly a thousand cds just to get better sound? Perhaps an audiophile would go to this trouble, but even someone like myself who has exceptional hearing thinks mp3 is 'good enough', especially in comparison to the work that'd have to be done to make a conversion. Vorbis is certainly better, but mp3 is decent as well; when thinking about the work involved in doing another library conversion the differences between the two become more and more trivial with each passing second....
Which is no doubt why mp3 is still the default, even though Vorbis is clearly better than mp3 or any of the alternatives. Everyone else out there is just as lazy as I am.
There are a fair number of people who have a similar reaction to violins. Although it's not as bad as a harpsichord, a violin has strong high-frequency harmonics that are often badly out of tune. If you clip off everything above 15 kHz or so, you eliminate this distracting noise and the music comes through.
And if you do that, those of us who have exceptional hearing will immediately notice that the violin seems 'flat'; much of the 'character' of the person playing it will be cut out completely, which is often expressed on the high end.
Not that most people will notice; they don't have the hearing for it.

I hope this thing falls flat on its face, and that many developing countries out there take the things that have been given ridiculous patents in the U.S., 'steal' them, and then turn a nice fat profit off of them.
Perhaps then my people will see that they aren't capable of imposing a world-wide dictatorship and will just give up on this insanity altogether...yeah, right. Hey, at least I can dream of an America not ruled by loons and people who spit on the Constitution.
What galls me is that there's a certain type of person who laments the fact that six billion people walk the planet, then suggest that everything would be just peachy keen if only 90% of them didn't exist.
But they do. So overpopulation, while it may be a problem, is just not something you can 'solve'. Not unless you're willing to wipe out a great many of those people. And if that's so, I nominate *you* to be one of the one's to be exterminated.
To a person not invested in murdering billions, overpopulation isn't a 'problem', it's a simple fact of life that one has to deal with. You might decide to try to do something about the growth rate (the most effective method being to raise the standard of living for every country on the planet), but the current numbers will not decline unless some rabid greenie with a supervirus is let loose upon the world.
The world has a certain population of human beings. Deal with it. Problem or not it's a fact of life and the gnashing of teeth and the wringing of hands does nothing other than to suggest that certain nations with high birth rates are to 'blame'.
No doubt these same folks will scream for the banning of immortality since it would exacerbate the 'problem' - well, ban it for everyone else *but themselves*, of course.....
The logical conclusion is that communism leads directly to fascism, because the whole philosophy is so very wrong in almost every conceivable way that it's impossible to even implement partially correctly!
That's bullshit. No one has ever attempted to implement anything even remotely like communism. The Soviet Union, China, and Cuba are simple fascist dictatorships that have used the rhetoric of communism without applying any actual communism whatsoever.
BTW, I'm not a communist, I'm a Randian libertarian. I think real, marxist communism is extreme bullshit idealism without any grounding in real-world human behavior. But I recognize, quite clearly, the fundamental difference between a dictator claiming communism and an actual attempt at communism, and the latter has never happened.
By your reasoning if these societies had instead claimed to be 'democratic' and 'capitalism', any person claiming to be a capitalistic democrat who tried to institute such a society would invariably be nothing more than a monster prepped to kill millions. Oh, wait....
Nobody claimed that "individual rights would solve everything". You made that up yourself, pulling the words out of your ass with no regard to what the original poster said.
Very deceptive of you. Perhaps you should run for office....
Ironically enough, the federally-owned land in the state of Oregon, where I live, is leased to logging firms in rotation. This means that there are now exactly three tiny patches of old-growth forest left in the entire state; the rest has been logged by private companies who pay the government for the privilege.
All of the range land - and I mean every bit of it - is leased to ranchers, primarily for cattle production. Nothing is 'preserved' by the government. Very little 'natural' rangeland exists (not that I give a shit, but it certainly seems to upset the environmentalists).
Oddly enough, the land that has the least amount of logging is that owned by the Weyerhauser corporation. You see, this company's life blood is logging, and they know that they have to preserve their crops *over the course of a century* to maintain sustainable logging. Something the U.S. government doesn't do in any way, shape or form.
So the best maintained forest land in the state belongs to a private company whose sole interest is long-term financial motivation. A company which is aggressively investigating selective cutting over clear-cutting because it seems to be more profitable in the long run, something the federal government refuses to do because clear-cutting is more profitable in the short run.
So much for trusting the government to preserve natural resources....
The proposed technical standard would be aimed at identifying "good" from "bad" e-mails on any platform.
So whether you're running Win98, Win2000, or WinXP, you'll be certain to meet the technical standards! Oh, and open source need not apply: you're all terrorists and communists anyway, and obviously a part of the problem.
If somebody punches you, do you punch them straight back?
No, I pull out my.38, point the barrel right between the son-of-a-bitch's eyes, and say "you want to try that again?"
When threatened with violence, the production of a firearm has never, in my experience, resulted in an escalation of that violence. In fact, the assholes who're being violent seem to discover pacifism quite quickly, as well as the location of the nearest available exit.
This works well for me. If it doesn't work for you, well then, don't punch me.
While much of your post made sense, your rabid anti-communism makes you look like a loon.
The so-called 'Communists' in the former Soviet Union and modern-day China are actually fascists. Their economic systems have nothing whatsoever to do with communism. Most intelligent people recognize there's a huge difference between the communism-as-theory and communism-as-rhetoric. The Soviet Union and Communist China were, or are, communist in name only. Their use of 'communism' is nothing more than a propaganda tool.
So if you're a reasonably intelligent sort you can indeed be a communist without backing the fascist propaganda states of the Soviet Union or China. It's really quite simple.
Equating little-c communists with Soviet or Chinese Communists is just plain ridiculous. The two have nothing to do with one another.
Money and power make the law in every country, not just the U.S. Any country in Europe is just as much a whore in this regard as America is.
This system isn't new; it's as ancient as civilization itself. What's happening in America is the same thing that's been happening in America and all over the world since time immemorial.
And protests change nothing. At best they manage to oust one powermonger and replace him with someone a bit more intelligent and a bit less obvious. The movements of the Sixties did nothing to improve this country, and in case you haven't noticed the very same protesters are now Boomers happily electing anti-liberty politicians and passing anti-freedom laws just to buy themselves the illusion of safety. These former radicals are more invested in the status quo than their parents ever were.
The 'apathy' of the 'average American' (read: anyone in Gen X or younger) is entirely due to the fact that the system resists all attempts at change, and everyone who is older and already 'has theirs' is actively assisting the system to crack down on anyone who wants change. Change = danger to the power structure, and is therefore evil if you're already set and happy with things just the way they are.

And if ye have a second clip, ye shall reload and empty that one into him as well. And that man who wishes to do others harm will never raise a hand against anyone ever again, and life will be good."
It doesn't matter how well liked a murdering bad guy is. The very fact that he murdered makes him fair game. We might let a court system decide whether or not he's truly guilty, but if he is then he deserves nothing less than death.
An eye for an eye sounds just and equitable to me, not to mention very, very satisfactory.
