So do I. If this idea had come from the Linux community instead of Microsoft, we'd have seen prototypes in weeks, maybe even days.

There is a subtle difference between having threading functionality and showing an entire thread in a forum-like manner. As you say, every email client has threading.

I use Mozilla and KMail, and they do not have this kind of display. KMail and Mozilla have two panes on the right. The top right pane is the thread view showing the original email with replies under it, indented. The bottom right pane shows the single message selected in the pane above it, not the contents of the entire thread.

If Mozilla or KMail implemented the interface described, the top right pane would show the subject of the thread, and not each nested reply. It would not be possible to select an individual message in this pane. The bottom right pane would show all messages in the selected thread, with an interface similar to that shown in the screenshot. In other words, I'd see every single email in the entire thread all at once.

I suppose it's pointless to expect a little content so late in this conversation, but I find the original article intriguing, and I'd like to use an interface like that to see how well it works.

Lots of people have insisted that their favorite email readers can do this. As far as I can tell, they didn't RTFA.

All email clients (yes, even Outlook) can do threading. This is NOT about threading.

The article is about HOW A SELECTED THREAD IS DISPLAYED.

If you're so busy that you can't take 2 minutes of time to RTFA, at least look at the screenshot.

OK, now that you've done that, what existing email client, if any, can show a selected thread in a nested, forum-like view similar to that shown in the article?

I thought this article at News of the World was interesting. It lists some of the weapons the U.S. could use to fight a modern war: a two-barrelled rifle that shoots shells that "explode in the air over the target and unleash a rain of death"; a helmet with visor that highlights enemies in red and friendlies in green; wrist-mounted keyboards for sending text messages to other soldiers' visors; Robot Swarms; a 2-megawatt, 747-mounted laser that "is so accurate it can pick out and destroy an individual in a crowd 180 miles away without harming people around him".

Mozilla 0.9.2 can block popups, too, but there's no UI for it yet. Add this to your prefs.js file:

    user_pref("capability.policy.default.Window.open", "noAccess");

You can also allow popups from some sites. See the 0.9.2 release notes for details.

I agree. It's Microsoft's OS, and they can do whatever they want. But it's not just consumers who keep buying Microsoft products that allow these practices to continue. Did anyone see any mention in the article that Kodak is porting their software to MacOS, BeOS, BSD, or Linux? Me neither. Let's face it, Kodak is partially responsible for this, and I don't really feel all that sorry for them.

(I know I'm quoting this sentence out of context, but I thought I'd comment on it.)

I've heard some clueless sales-people making equally uninformed statements about Windows machines.

Customer [Holding Windows 95 upgrade]: Will this work on my son's computer?
Employee: How much memory does it have?
    Customer: Uhhh... [pause] It's a '486...
    Employee: No problem!
I suspect that the employee had been told that 16 MB (or whatever) was the minimum requirement for Win95 and thought that the customer had 486 MB of memory.

    Here's another:

Employee: Would you like to sign up for MSN and get a $400 discount?
    Customer: What's that?
Employee: The Microsoft Network. It's an Internet Service provider.
Customer: [pause] I'm with AOL now... Would I have the same email address?
    Employee: Sure!
This customer actually signed up for MSN. I suppose he believed that switching ISPs was as easy as switching long-distance carriers.

Voting systems are not created by the U.S. federal government, but by the counties and states. The state where I live had major problems with punchcard systems two decades ago. The state passed a law saying that if counties ever upgraded their voting systems, they were not allowed to change to punchcard systems. The result is that today only one county still uses punchcards. Everybody else uses a pencil to fill in little circles, and the ballots are read with optical scanners. It's just as fast as counting punchcards without the ambiguities.
