  2. Fork on Microsoft Agrees to License Windows Source Code · · Score: 1

How long will it take before this code hits the streets?
How long will it take before a fork is on the net?

This would also be really helpfull for wine and samba developers.

  3. Miserable failure on U.S. Government Wants Google Search Records · · Score: 4, Funny

I guess bush really wants to know how many people are looking for 'Miserable failure' on google.

  4. Homo v.s. Hetero on Ask Microsoft's Security VP · · Score: 1

Do you think a homogeneous os population will be beter then a heterogeneous one, considering security.

Isnt with a homogeneous population the change of pandemics much larger so any security fault will have a much greater impact?

If you believ a heterogeneous population is better (which is wat most research points at) how does microsoft use this information?

  5. Single market = OK on EU Software Patent Argument to Reopen? · · Score: 4, Insightful

The goal of creating a single patent system for europe is not a bad thing in itself. But they should start with the lowest dominator instead of trying to make "everything" patentable.

Lets hope they've learned something from the previous attempt and they will go for a clear patent systems that only allows "real" inventions.

But I honestly dont think that the big money will accept a more strict patent system. So we need to keep the politicans aware of what the citizens think!

  6. loading time on Web Users Judge Sites in the Blink of an Eye · · Score: 1

I dont know how they tested this (probably with screenshots) but a page never loads within 50ms. In real life the way (speed, layout correct, banners slowing down, etc) a page loads is also imporant.

The 50ms cant be right how do they even measure such a response you do not click within 50ms.

Basicly I do not trust this research.

  7. Re:Linux users on Spielberg Bitten by DVD Encryption · · Score: 1

I know libdvdcss solves this. The issue is that this is even necassary, and illegal in some countries.

Why should I do something (difficult for novice users like my mother/girlfriend) while I payed for the dvd?

  8. Linux users on Spielberg Bitten by DVD Encryption · · Score: 2, Insightful

Then they now know how someone who only has a linux machine feels when he tries to play the dvd he just bought.

I suggest them to download the movie that works without problems.

  9. Re:an argument for lamarckianism on Genetic Clues to Cause of Death? · · Score: 1

Yes the genes will passed on but they would be passed on anyhow.

They are not looking at the genes themself but at the rna created by those genes.

  10. Good thinking on Genetic Clues to Cause of Death? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Not even that suprising but I never thought about it. If the oxygen level in the cells decreases that of course has an effect on the creation of rna.

If a creature dies suddenly the total blood flow stops and so the flow of all chemicals instead of just oxygen (and maybe a few others).

  11. 4, 19 inch screens on Dell Selling 30" Flat Panels · · Score: 2, Insightful

For the same money you can buy 4 (or even more) 19 inch screens.

Having several monitors gives you the ability to focus on the central screen while some applications (monitoring, chat, email, etc...) or on the side.
These monitors can be moved placed on top of eachother turned to a collega, etc.. so they provide you much more flexibility.

Also when one of the 4 screens dies thats not a big deal when your massive 30inch screen dies you have nothing.

  12. Linux? on Turn an Optical Mouse into a Scanner · · Score: 0

The software is written in VB, how ugly can it get.

So the question is not "Does it run linux?" but "Is there a linux version?".

And I'am curious if this site can be slashdotted.

This is a settlement probably offfered by sony. The other option is that sony will fight in court and millions of dollars will be wasted.

I would say consider this as warning where sony gets away easy. Otherwise only the lawers will win.

Of course this is an exploit but the impact shouldn't be overrated.

  17. Go outside? on 365 Nights of Skywatching · · Score: 3, Funny

Looking at the code 'GoogleTranslator.java' they are just using http://translate.google.com/

So basicly this is just a proxy which sends a message to google which then translates and the result is returned.

    4) Should technology be accesable to everyone or only those who can afford?
    5) What is more important, money or a social society?
