This is an Open Source project. The source code is available for download.
If you like to try it first without downloading, we have a live Translating Proxy running on our server. Set your Y! Messenger HTTP proxy Server Name to avmedia.org, and Server Port to 8084. For more detailed instructions see here. Keep in mind that the server can get very busy at times.

Cool idea but, wow, that means they'll have a copy of every careless comment you make while chatting. That's one more entity that one has to trust on the Internet.

Just an FYI for those of us in linuxland... Kopete has (and has had) this ability for some time. The translation plugin will work with any protocol that Kopete supports.
...can it translate net speak into something approaching regular English. Oh how nice would it be to not have to read "lyke" "u" "dunno" "ur" "wateva" and the like anymore.
I've seen that Kopete has such an extension to translate your IM chat online, but I havent tried it/needed it so far. Did anyone try it? Are they useful? Can you really get by in a normal conversation?

Now, I think this is awesome technology... However, as people said... what about Klingon? No really, my question is, when will we be able to have universal translators implanted in our ear so that anyone speaking anything can be translated into your native language? Now wouldn't THAT be nifty? Klingon/Cardassian/Romulan included of course. Maybe even elven.

It seems strange that this is (to my knowledge) the first time this idea has been implemented. It doesn't seem too hard, with Yahoo! and Google translation services available for hacking. I'd love to see this manifest as a standard feature in other clients like AdiumX or Gaim...any developers out there reading this thread?? ^_^
I'd want a translator to understand IM slang/gibberish.
Am I the only one to sadisticaly force my friends to talk normal english by force feeding them with correct english ? They usually give up the chat-speak after a while.
If you look in the code you can see that http://translate.google.com/ is used for translating. So google can still see it. They might even put some adds in.

Hopefully the translation is better than the English in the above sentence.
With the amount of overseas outsourcing occuring in today's world of big business, will this mean a boom to the use of Instant Messaging as a form of technical support? Some might squak at the labor of having to type something in versus just saying it, but compared to dealing with "Shitty Wok, take ur orda prease" I think it'd be a Godsend.

Well, that is cool, but I haven't had a problem translating all my chat discussions. I just use some of the translation services available for all text on OS X. It would be nice if my chat client would support automatic translation to and from a given language, for specific person though. I do have to select the text and hit a key-combo. I really hope Linux and Windows catch up and move things like translation and spell/grammar checking to system wide services, rather than re-implementing them in each individual application. When using text or images on Windows, it always feels like I've stepped back to an earlier, more primitive, era of computing.
...so unless Google releases it, that would be a big "no."
That said, the Google translator is pretty literal and, ergo, practically useless.
For example, the following text is from the French version of BBC news:

Which, sure, you can "get" it with the Google translation to English, but good grief:

My favorite machine translation fun was a response I got from some friends who had autotranslated a phrase to German for me. I get the email:
"Ich werde eine Kappe in deinem Esel kaputt machen."
I turned to them and asked what the hell: "I will break a hat in your donkey." meant.
They laughed, and said they had fed it "I will bust a cap in your ass."

First I was exited to see an open source translation project, especially in combination with an instant messenger. The I realized that they simply send the messages to Google for translation. So no access to a translation engine and the quality of Googles translations.
There seems to be openLogos, a commercial translation system that has recently become available as open source based on Linux and PostgreSQL. Guess I'll have to give that one a try, it looked rather complicated. Has anybody any experience with openLogos or similar (freely available) systems?

This is awesome. I would like to have this for a triple-language forum. So users would have to know at least one language of English, French and German to participate. At the top of the page and in the profile settings, there are check boxes the user checks for thwe languages that he understands. Thus is someone doesn't understand German, the plugin would display the auto-translated version in the user's prefered language. Manual translations can be provided by the user to be displayed if available instead of the automatic translation. Please contact me if you have seen this multi-language forum someplace.

While you're waiting for this to show up, there's a realtime way of doing this in AJAX now: AJAX translator, and I could see this making it's way in a website, or forum to provide the same 'on the fly' translation of text. With all that's been done with the internet, it's still pretty segmented in terms of languages; this would open up that knot.

I remember there had been some hype about google developing some advanced translation technology based on neural nets learning natural language by comparing UN documents from many languages.
I wonder if google will soon integrate this sort of technology into their chat client, and hopefully outperform the existing machine translation tech.

Discussions with friends in the strange countries or for with people of other cultures after the coincidence speak, profit from this kind of the technology. Everything does not remove technical will suffers terriblly and straight under untranslated words (as a everyone, which read at all, the Japanese, Korean or even German small article report places of assembly know).

Open-source AYTTM already has a feature to translate your IMs via Babelfish. Gaim has a plugin for Babelfish translation as well.

It's nice to see the internet being used for what it's really capable of. Why should we use something that truly has the power to connect the world, and shelter ourselves behind the same invisible lines we call borders in cyberspace? I've been waiting so long for more things like this to come about. How much knowledge about culture and experiences are lying in wait out there? It's always seemed foolish to me for a tool as powerful as the internet to be restricted to each individuals language, something we clearly have the capability of overcoming with technology.
As far as I'm concerned, we're all still sitting around our unfinished tower of Babel.

Check out Nativetext.com. It's a website where anyone can signup to translate or read XML feeds in foreign languages. The guy that started it is pretty innovative - he was Slashdotted last year for turning nvidia GPUs into audio processors. So, it should be something to keep your eyes on. Here's a clip from the site: "nativetext is an online community where you can publish or read any document in any language. Translated by humans, not machines. NLS (native language syndication) is a free service to translate your RSS feed or podcast into any language."
Great, but this would not be practical for live chat. For this purpose we have to live with the best automatic translation technology available.
But does it translate to/form Americanish? I think they would have that since it's a very popular (and commonly used) lanuage. If not, why are they posting on this American site? Like we care that Polandians can speak with Germians.

I'm a french speaking person, french is my mother tongue.
I'm quite good with english though I am far from perfect.
I recently started learning (trying to learn, actually) spanish.
I found someone who has interests in common with mine online and started chatting. I can tell you that google translations are FAR INFERIOR to that provided by the fish.
Moreover, the fish has the advantage (for me) of being able to translate to/from french in addition to english.
My only problem with the fish is that it sometimes (quite frequently actually) refuses to offer me translation and just provides a standard error message "couldn't translate" blah blah...
Another resource I found useful is yahoo's online en/es dictionary. It is provided by Houghton Mifflin, their stand alone product (which I bought) is the exact same content, except that the interface for it sucks and the data is password protected. So no real advantage except speed over using the online service.

Utilization of real-time translation in instant messaging is a great way for people who can not otherwise understand each other get one step closer to being able to do so. Imagine this being implemented server-side, say in a an XMPP (Jabber) server, where the user defines therir languages and the server automatically translates when two people of different languages communicate with each other. Howver, privacy of the communication stream may be an issue if using third-party translation services, though this is not an issue of interest to me.

Why do I see a spawn of Engrish.com type sites coming about from using this proxy? At least they're not offering Chinese as one of the languages.
According to the VP of Marketing at IM management and security company Akonix Systems, who I just talked to today for an article I am writing elsewhere, Akonix saw IM attacks in the fall that were able to somehow use the IM software's API to identify the language on victims' machines and spoof them in their own language. How's that for translation?
Now I can be hit on via IM by every perv on the planet in my own badly bruised native tongue. Just what I needed. *Eye Roll*

Why does this make slashdot? I think every bot-maker has at some point thought of the brilliant idea of hooking a translator into a proxy--- it's almost a bot-makers hello world program. I think the problem is, you soon realize just how poor translator technology is. Especially when you try plugging in two of these proxies together, one translating from English to French, and from French to English--- and realize that your text becomes completely indecipherable most of the time.
Each of these asks whether any or all of the women are outside. God I love babelfish ;)

A friend of mine wrote a GPLed translator plugin (using AV babelfish) for GAIM. It has been avail. since the '90s.
She couldn't see the irony in her favourite film being Clueless, despite the fact that such a dialect originated when her own parents were teens!

but wot about ppl who type in shorthand, I've tried typing in game chat into a transl8r and it doesn't work cos people don't type correct spellings for words in chat programs! Perhaps this will have a multilingual txtrs dict in it.
would you IM someone with whom you have no common language?
I actually prefer talking with my german buddies in german, it keeps me from getting rusty. Plus, the translator is bound to be imperfect, it's much better to write in a language you know just a little than to have it translate something way off base.
