  1. Re:CUSTOMER ALERT: Uswest DSL (ISP) on Cable vs. DSL, Explained · · Score: 1

I am using uswest as an ISP and for my DSL line. (see my email address?) Yes, when I got my modem I had to connect to it (using a serial line at first) and set it up for ppp mode. What it does is it sets up my username and password in the nvram of the modem, and when it is first turned on (it is always on though, but whenever it needs to reconnect) it uses that name and password to authenticate on the network, then uses DHCP. On my side of the network I am a 10.0.0.x, and I connected a hub so I could potentially have hundreds of computers in my house on the internet, I think. The modem gives out the 10.0.0.x to local machines using DHCP on the local network. The modem uses NAT (network address translation) so my IP address (which changes) is different to the outside world. If you try to telnet to me you will actually get my modem, (which has a password of course, and I think I have WAN telnets disabled anyway). This works fine for email and web stuff. Unfortunately I cannot:
    run a web server
    accept files in ICQ
connect to a lot of IRC servers because the identd can't get through to me
It's due to that stupid NAT. Uswest said I had to subscribe to their home office offering to get dedicated IPs without NAT. I'm not sure how much it is but I bet it isn't free.

I think a lot of slashdotters were waiting for you to do something about it. I don't think any kind of posting on slashdot is the same as sending hate mail to corel, which no one did. It was more talking about them behind their back. You were the first to contact them. Speaking of which, it was funny seeing in that email what you really think of slashdot. :-)

First they posted the requirements for the beta, "requires Windows." OK, so that was a mistake. An overlooked boilerplate bullet. Then they did the same with the software license. I don't think they intended to violate the GPL. They seem to have repeated trouble with details. Just think of it as a code review for software licenses.

  3. This is not "Linux for Windows" per se on WinLinux 2000 · · Score: 2

This is not Linux for Windows in the same sense of "Word for Windows." I know that is what a lot of people thought because I thought that too... and that is what a lot of the comments seem to be saying. It has an installer that runs under windows, pulls settings from Windows to make installing Linux easier, and uses UMSDOS to put the linux files on the C: drive.
    e.g. c:\linux\usr\bin\netscape etc.
Then when you run linux, an icon set up for you, (probably using loadlin) Windows is shut down and the linux kernel takes over completely starting with text mode and everything.
Your best bet for running Linux at the same time as Windows is VMWARE for windows NT (or vmware for linux, you can run win95/98/NT or almost any other OS under linux).

Do some things run on one BSD that don't run on another? If so why isn't there a best one? Are there different distributions of nBSD (for some reasonable value of n) like there are a ton of Linux distributions? If not, why not?
