  4. Weird story for that day..... on 7 Myths About The Challenger Disaster · · Score: 1

I remember the accident clearly. Somewhere In my house I even have a VHS tape with at least 4 continuous hours of coverage on it.

I've even got a weird story to tell about that day. I was home that day and was watching televsion when the news report had interrupted whatever it was I was watching. I watched stunned. As a kid I was interested in aircraft, rockets, etc. So to see this unfold in front of my eyes, live, was a shock. Watching the coverage, seeing how the accident was explained made me curious. During a commercial break, I ran into my bedroom to grab my model of the Columbia shuttle and look at it as a reference point. It was one of those full blown kits; shuttle, boosters, fuel tank, platform. I kept my shuttle proudly on top of a tall bookshelf next to my bed. When I came in and looked up, it wasn't there. It had fallen down to my bed, the left booster detached from the fuel tanks.

Sure, it wasn't the exact spot where the challenger experienced the failure. But it was an eerie coincidence nonetheless. That model was up on its shelf when I left my bedroom to watch tv and came down sometime before I saw the live news report.

If you're creating an IS dept. It's time you start looking into ITIL See here for more info: http://www.itil.co.uk/ From what you describe of your situatiom, you're the only guy running the show. You need to start establishing a framework within your org to start managing IS/IT in an organized manner. ITIL provides a framework for which to do so. Trust me, you'll find this useful. Whether your company likes it or not, it has reached a critical point where it depends on it's IT infrastructure more than it thinks it does. You've gone beyond being the only admin running the show. The smart thing is to get their buy in on treating IS/IT like an asset and managing it correctly.

  12. What is the real impact here? on Jail Time for Movie Swappers · · Score: 2, Interesting

Seriously, practically every week we hear about movies setting box office records.

Yet, someone with a Hulk workprint on their PC is instantly guilty?

I seriously doubt the movie industry is in financial straits. Despite DVD, pay per view, specialty channels, etc. People still love to see movies on the big screen and will not jump en masse to peer to peer to get their fill.

Even with broadband, it;s a pain in the ass to download movie files.

Go to the theater and watch a movie the way it is meant to be. And from the box office number$; it seems that that is what the majority of consumers are doing!

Anyone who is going to download and watch a crappy camjob of LOTR ROTK is a moron. That is a big screen movie! However, they shouldn't be crucified for it either. The punishment here does not fit the crime IMHO.

If there is a crime being committed it is by the movie studios for:

1.) Jacking up ticket costs to the point where it is now worth waiting for the DVD release. I can pay up to $13.50CDN per person depending on the theater and show time. So, instead of taking my girlfriend to every freakin' movie. We now pick and choose. If it's big screen worthy (Matirx, LOTR) we'll hit the theater. If it's not. (i.e. any romantic comedies) we rent it on DVD for $5.

2.) Recycling the same plots over and over and over again. There is a movie formula in America that is followed to the T by practically every studio depending on the genre. There are not too many truly original films anymore.

3.)Blaming the leaked movie files on the end users (consumers) and not the people within the movie industry making this material available prematurely. What's to stop the MPAA from manufacturing this crisis for their own gain? It's not that far fetched. /RANT ON
US Senators should be spending their time and resources questioning the validity of " The War on Terror" not passing sweetheart copyright laws that hammer the average consumer to the benefit of a multibillion dollar industry. /RANT OFF

  13. Re:I love this hypocrasy on RIAA Prepares Legal Blitz Against Filesharers · · Score: 4, Interesting

I think people understand the concept of having the right to make money off what they create.

What seems to be the major issue is that the RIAA, without having any solid proof, is claiming that filesharing is the sole cause of the music industry's financial losses.

They believe that the economy's downturn, does not apply to them, that sales should be constantly rising every year. When they don't rise, they look for a scapegoat.

Rather than studying the download model, they attack it because it threatens their distribution cartel. They don't care about trying to find out how the filesharing phenomenon works. Are people truly using this to sample music and then purchase accordingly? Or are they just plain theiving?

It's wrong to go into a music store and pilfer a CD as much as it is to download an MP3 version of a song. But, is that download occuring because someone wants to sample some music? Or is it just plain theft?

Are there any studies on this?

  14. Re:Wow on Movie Industry Blames Texting for Bad Box Office · · Score: 1

    I think this is shameful.

Movies and music are among the select few products out there that once you have seen/heard them your money and satisfaction is gone!

If you don't like a movie. Fat chance getting your money back, and more importantly, your time.

What the movie industry is trying to do here would make P.T. Barnum proud. "Never give a sucker an even break!!" Hollywoood churns out crap, they know and fear this so....don't improve the quality of the product. Bump up the advertising, generate hype and make your killing those first 3 days.

If people afterword felt that the movie was subpar or outright sucked, there's nothing they can do about it. The money is in the bank.

So if people are texting each other, is it really making a difference? How many movies have you seen that your friend's say sucked, but you enjoyed? And vice-versa.

I'm sure the MPAA used proven scientific methods to come to this conclusion. After all, they are acting in our best interests. Right?

It's bad enough that going to the big screen costs way more than it used to. The concessions are a ripoff, from a quality, quantity and price point.

Reading this, you get the impression that the movie studios expect and demand our patronage for a product we cannot get an appreciation for until we consumed/viewed it. I know there is not much that can be done in this regards. But, the movie industry is going to price themselves out of the stratosphere without providing a good effort for our money.

It has come to the point where buying a DVD, something you can view as much as you want, has become cheaper than taking your girlfriend out to the movies. Sure some movies are must sees on the big screen (i,e LOTR) others are not.

Hollywood is just recycling the same stories over an over again. There are some movies I am not goinng to waste my time in the theatre for.

Bay Boys2?? Saw it before it even came out. It was called Bad Boys 1.

S.W.A.T? Hmmm...cop story. Very original. Next!!

It is insulting that the MPAA believes it has a right to make X amount of $$. They should learn from their mistakes like the rest of the business world does.

If they managed to ban texting, just shout out at the top of your lungs as you exit the theatre...

"Don't see (insert movie name here) it reeked of mastadon poo!!!" ;)
