The problem with the XBox is the vast majority of the optical drives that come with them are incapable of reading burned CDs, or in some cases even audio CDs. Even if you get the drive that's supposed to be the most compatible, the Samsung, it still may not be able to read them (like mine).
The XBox isn't a great solution because the drives suck. A good solution, yes, but not a great one.
Perhaps you live in some far-off universe, I don't really know. If you are in a relatively close universe, you can go to any typical online retailer and buy yourself a nice burner, and a bunch of discs to go with it. Hell, I doubt it's much more expensive to get the DVD-RW discs you mention.
I got a DVD burner and 100 blanks for $85 shipped. And that was a few months back. A little slow, are you?
DVD Burners are what, $50 max for an excellent Dual-Layer burner, and discs can be had for $0.30. How much cheaper can you get? You can barely get a CD burner for that!
Sounds to me like a known Microsoft booster attempting to create doubt in a competitor's product by claiming it will be obsolete in less than a year. We all know how well Apple guards their secrets, the chances of Thurott leading something this big are slim to none.
There are rumors that OS X will in fact run on x86 machines, and is kept up to date, along with a seperate sort of "Classic" mode VirtualPC type thing that allows translation from PPC to x86 (so your old programs will still work). A friend of mine that worked at Apple for awhile only smirked at my mention of it, and would neither confirm nor deny.
Apple, in my opinion, will stay with IBM as long they keep producing quality chips. Sure they had some problems with their new fab process, but a minor slip-up is no reason to dump them. Especially when it requires such a radical change.
Seriously, though. Apple's cases are not good. You should consider going with a case by someone else anyway. There are plenty of companies that offer thicker cases if you're willing to consider them. Marware springs to mind, and I'm sure there are many others.
Well, thousands of customers calling their support lines to figure out why their players no longer work is going to be a pretty big problem for them, I'd say.
I'm not sure that creating a product that another entity can simply break is a great way to go. Can you imagine how irate all the innocent users would be? Man, I'd hate to be tech support at any of the companies that make these.
No, there is no current way to enable the iMac to act as an external monitor. That's the way it goes. Most laptops can't function as external monitors either. Personally, I think that would be a great feature, but what do I know.
D'oh. Though that is such a common misspelling it would have been hilarious if they tried to rerelease it without the "z" to get out of the lawsuit. Although they'd get sued again, which would suck, hehe.
Seriously, I'd call Apple today and let them know you want Tiger, and make sure you get it. Really, there's no reason for you not to if it's not supposed to ship until next month, but I wouldn't leave it to chance. Give 'em a call, I'm sure they'll help out.
Yea, that is what I was going to recommend if you couldn't talk them out of it and it hadn't shipped yet. I mean, really, there's no reason not to. In fact, I've heard that a number of reps have actually told people to cancel orders and reorder things to get special deals and such.
Glad to hear they did something for you. I'd be pretty upset if I missed it by 2 hours. From some of the other posts around here today, it looks like they're being pretty generous with those who ordered prior to the announcement. Good for them.
Even if you bought it a couple weeks ago, I'd still give Apple Customer Service a call. As a few others throughout the postings have noted, even if they purchased machines as much as a week ago the reps were offering to supply them with Tiger for $10. I'd say its worth a shot either way... the worst thing they can do is tell you you'll have to pay retail.
Well, it is free but you have to pay for shipping, for which they charge $10 (a little steep, I agree). If you time your order so that your machine arrives after the 29th, Tiger will come inside the box (but not installed - I did this with Panther and my old PowerBook), no shipping required.
I just mentioned this in another post, but Apple got sued by the rights holders over the name Rendevous. Part of the settlement included renaming the technology. Rendevous and Bonjour are the same thing, with different names.
Yea, Apple got sued by another networking company (sorry, can't remember the name off-hand) that owned the rights to the name Rendevous. Part of the settlement was that Apple change the name of its zeroconf implementation. They chose the unfortunate-sounding backup name Bonjour.
Yea, but it's not like Apple hides their upgrade policy. The only way you get a free upgrade to the new version is if you buy the computer after the new OS's release date is announced. They've done this since at least Jaguar, if not before (relatively new Apple user).
Everyone knew Tiger was on the way, if it was the big of a deal why didn't you wait?
If by last night you mean April 12th (after midnight), then you'll be able to get it for $10 shipping and handling. Otherwise, you're gonna have to call and talk them out of it. In fact, I'd probably call today and let them know. Who knows, you only missed the announcement by a day, maybe they'll give you a discount, or just send it for $10.
I've been waiting to purchase a mini until the announcement since I knew if you ordered beforehand you won't get a free upgrade. Off to the Apple store I go...
This page has some information about them, and their proper names. The pictures are pretty poor, though. I'll see if I can track down some better ones.
If the manufacturers determined that the crack is unlikely to cause a problem, I wouldn't be surprised if it was pretty minor. NASA knows, at this point, that the launch is going to be under intense scrutiny. I seriously doubt they'd put the mission in dager if they were anything less than 100% certain it wouldn't be a problem.
Besides that, I still disagree with the official explaination of the Challenger disaster. I don't know if anyone else watched the very interesting piece on the Discovery channel about a new form of lightning they're just beggining to fully understand that actually appears to travel from the ground up to the sky... Anyway, there was a picture taken by someone in San Fransisco that clearly showed the Challenger being hit by this lightning during its descent. The lightning trail was dismissed as a camera artifact. The owner has be unable to reproduce any such "artifacts". Anyway, I'm sure someone here knows a bit more about it than I.
That's one of the cooler things I've seen in a long time. Thanks for the link! I always wondered how they detected those things.
I took a look at the new US $20s... on the back you can see the pattern in the yellow "20"s scattered, seemingly at random, in the background. Very sneaky!
Yea, quality is not the only problem! Did you see how much he wanted for those plain PS/2 mice with no scroll wheels? $82.95... On Sale!!
Man, you'd have to be pretty hard-up to pay $80 for a left-handed mouse when you can buy a universal lefty/righty mouse at Best Buy for $20 (with a scroll wheel)!

The new versions of iLife and OS X are included on all new machines. iLife split off from the OS a revision back (Panther). This is nothing new.

Oh no, I accidentally typed "Challenger" instead of "Columbia"! You better go off on a diatribe about how stupid I am!

Sprite and Jets

Well, 8A425 isn't even the GM release, so it might not be as risky as hosting, say, 8A428.
So, just out of curiosity... You claim that 6 people in your office tried out Macs, and took them back... one when it was more than a month old.
Apple doesn't allow you to return Macs more than 14 days old. Something's fishy here.
