"For example there was a case during the Shoah (Holocost) where a man could have bribed the germans to let his son off of a train to the camps, but if he did this somone else's son would have been put on to make the count. "
A parallel to this would be people who drive SUVs because they are safer to the people inside the SUV, but *way* more dangerous to whoever they smash into. So they're more likely to survive a crash, and more likely to kill the other person in a crash. That doesnt sound ethical either.
What happens if it starts linking to content people find offensive?
What if it inserts links to adult sites when a kid is using the computer, for example?
When I make a website, if I want to show ads on it, I'll show ads. I'll chose who can get links and whatnot.
Maybe I want to make a website about how bad Nike is with the sweatshops, and next thing I know I've got yellow links all over my new website pointing to Nike sites saying that 8 year olds making shoes is a good thing.
I'd be pretty pissed if my content started getting dilluted like that.
If someone is using a file sharing service, how are we supposed to know if they meant to share certain files? It's not like a fax to a wrong number where it says- To Freddy Snerdlick, a shared file on a file sharing service is meant to be given to everyone using that service. Its not our job to figure out what they meant to share and what they didnt. I cant tell that they meant to share this mp3 and this avi, but not this mpeg and certainly not this text file.
I used to search Napster for "mic in track.mp3"
which is usually people recording themselves singing (usually awful), talking into the mic, doing mini comedy skits, and sometimes recordings of... uhhh more private things.
When I was a kid the house up the street from me got hit with a meteorite. Went right through the roof, through the second floor, bounced around all crazy-like in the downstairs before finally coming to a stop.
Scared the hell out of me. I was certain my house was next. Though I remember thinking it would be pretty cool to have my own meteorite.
You raise an interesting point, but we have to assume that
A- Russians and Chinese citizens know about this and arent doing anything about it. Knowing how the American media works, the rest of the world could be on fire and it wouldnt be reported in the US press. For all we know, they *do* care in Russia or China, or (whatever other country)
and
B- Russians and Chinese citizens know about this.
Maybe it hasnt been reported much in their media, since I dont have access to their newspapers, etc, I dont know.

p.s. One of the reasons there wasnt much protest in China over the arrest of the academics could be that most people didnt know about it (if they had known, I couldnt tell you if they would protest or not, but...) The arrests were more for the benefit of upper level chinese govt officials than they were to drum up anti-US sentiment among the general population.
one of my friends had the track and field mat. To win the race against the rabbit, the neighborhood kids would have to get on their hands and knees and pound the hell out of the pad, two kids per set of dots.
Running in place didnt work, pounding it with your fists did.
The reason why it's called "Final" Fantasy is that back in the day, Square was going broke.
So broke that they were about to go out of business. But, they were working on this great new game. Since it was the last game that Square was ever going to release, it was Final Fantasy.
But, since the game was a big hit and made Square truckloads of money, they didnt have to go out of business afterwards. And the only thing that made sense after that was to crank out endless sequels, a movie, etc.
If it hadn't caught on, it would have been final (for Square, at least.)
Here's a question:
While I admittedly dont know much about power generation...
We hear people talk about cold fusion. If we were able to accomplish 'cold fusion' then how would we transfer the energy created from the reaction into usable energy? Would it be too cold to make steam?
Or is cold a relative term? As in, it's still hot enough to make steam?
Actually, they usually give pretty honest reviews. I'm a pretty regular reader of somethingawful.com (especially Cliff Yablomsky Hates You... check that out if you get a chance)
They do tend to be more negative in general towards the games, but a lot of games do get good reviews.
There have been plenty of times when I disagreed with them about how bad they said a game was, but if they say it's good, it'll be good:]
I guess it depends on your interpretation of what he said. Maybe the script is fantastic. Maybe he meant it is a lot different than the other Star Trek scripts in plot, characters, etc... not different in terms of quality.
So the "public" doesnt know anything about science. I'll give you that.
But you know who knows something about science?
Scientists. Most of them think that global warming is occuring, and is a result of human activity.
It's the most expensive kind of "free" speech there is:]
But seriously folks!
Another option to having campaign contributions and personally funded campaigns would be publically financed campaigns. There have been a few publically financed campaigns in the US over the past few years. I dont know the exact mechanism they use though, so I cant really provide any more details.
I do agree that campaign donations qualify as free speech. I also think it's pretty much the same thing as bribery. But, I guess freedom trumps bribery.
On the other hand, a corporation shouldnt be given the same rights as an individual. I think only individuals should be given the rights of individuals, and corporations should not have the same rights as individual, actual, living & breathing people.

p.s. We already pretty much live in an aristocracy. Yes, there are exceptions, but overall (especially in the higher levels of govt, but even locally) it's the wealthiest who get elected.
Another theory, which doesnt get as much press, says that the mad cow disease is caused by a reaction to a chemical used to rid the cows of parasites. Apparantly the british farmers were given a bunch of "harmless" chemical weapon by-products by the british govt and told to rub it on the cow's skin. I guess kind of like the anti-flea and tick drops you put on your cat or dog's neck.. that sort of thing.
In any case, the theory goes that it's the reason why most human cases of mad cow disease are found in rural areas, because the farmers have been exposed to the chemical.
Another thing that I read is that the gestation period for mad-cow might be as long as 20+ years, which would also fit the theory- the farmers were given the chemicals about that long ago.

Last time I was there I played space quarks and wilderness.

You can buy a wing chun wooden training dummy.
But they ain't cheap.
And you have to learn to love bruised forearms.
I'd rather have a wooden dummy than any newfangled input device

I suck at fighting games, but I'm decent at kung fu.
Finally I'll have an advantage over that fat kid who would always beat me at Street Fighter II at the arcade.
Now all they need to invent is a time machine so I can go back and teach him a lesson.

A farmer individually wants to increase his/her yield to have more crops to sell.
Everyone using GE crops = oversupply.
Oversupply = low crop prices.
Low crop prices = bad for farmers.
