I was under the impression (and i could be wrong about this one) That there were going to use cartiriges still which is why the game prices have been way up. If they arent going to use game cartriges then they lose an extra source of revenue b/c they charged game companys for the technology in making the cartriges, They will have to make up that revenue some where and since the game console itself is nicely priced where else would they make it?
Macs are really getting high into DVD Authoring. The latest G4's come with the "SuperDrive" which im sure most people know is a DVD/CD-RW drive. Another company to look at is QPS-Inc (http://www.qps-inc.com) they have which will burn DVD's through firewire and they have a Guide for authoring DVD's. They have some of the beset products i know of and the support is really really good. Who knows maybe they would have some more info as well.
A number of things come into play here when you ask if there will be enough of a market. First off the market is only there if there are enough attractive games out there to pull some buyers. They dont even need the hard-core gamers (sorry to make you guys feel unwanted) they just need a nice chunk of the masses. X-Box is saying it will have only twenty games out which is a nice amount if it can get them out and ready in time (we know about Microsofts schedualing problems). Not only that but Microsoft is having a small problem of signing Gaming teams on board because it is an unproven system and people might react negitivly to it so why produces games that will fail. On the other hand if it hits the market and everyone goes wild it will be the new baby on the block and everyone will want to get on board to the project
Another thing to consider is price. GameCube is reasonably priced (but its games wont be) and Playstation isn't all that handsome of a price right now but by then you will expect major price cuts (more then the expected $50 - $100 expected at E3 Conference this week) Which will boost its sales just in time for the holiday season.
Over all i hope it works out because (even though it is microsoft) a little competition for the market will bring prices down through out the gamin world and no one can complain about that.
I think the drivers are cool and people will just cheat on-line weather the drivers are there or not but still the whole concept of the drivers allowing you to cheat and cheating itself makes the game stupid. Where is the challange in a game of Quake if you cheat? Whats the point of playing games at all? My opinion, and people will torch or laud it as they will.
There is a link in the article that is even scarier - http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/2/15718.html - everyone should see this and take note. It discuss "the end of the PC" although a little pessimistic and morbid it has alot of relevnt points especially from who it is coming from. Something needs to be done please if anyone has any ideas of how this could be prevented please something needs to be done so this Does not happen
I though that this was an excellent interview. It brough to light some scary stuffas far as PC's go. One of the questions i had on it was how will CPRM effect people who dont run windows? Is really going to end up being ignoredable by programs? After all the entertainment industry has gone to trouble to get it in the door. The next step if it was ignored by programs would be enforcing it in hardware instead of software. Digital fingerprints are all ready being implemented by Napster, it isnt that hard to take advantage of that at all. Really scary stuff.
