Not that I am particularly for or against outsourcing work but the company I work for recently decided to go with a developer who will outsource the work to India. The product is a custom search engine running on SQL with a Java interface. One of the good things about us outsourcing our work to India is that because of the time zone difference their day is our night and they can do maintenance on the system while no one is working over here.

I work for a company that makes movie trailers. Due to the nature of the bussiness we need large amounts of storage and fast acess to it. For out main editing stations we use a fiber setup but for the motion graphics department we have one 400 gb Medea external system and for that departments server we have a terabyte of sotrage on a IDE RAID solution. Both of them work great, the second system is RAID 5 with hot-swapable hard drive bays. It works great and it was around 1/5 the cost of a SCSI solution and even more for a Fiber Solution.

How exactly can a government pass laws against purchasing from a particular company, considering the fact that the company is still operating under perfectly LEGAL pretenses and practices? It doesn't make any difference what MS has been charged with or convicted of, because they haven't been sentenced.

It isn't really that absurd. It does make a difference if they have been charged and if they have been sentenced or not. The fact is that they were charged with a crime and they are in court and they will be sentenced. Since public offices have to maintain a certain dignity (even if they really don't do that very well) laws are sometimes passed to bring that dignity about.

It really isn't the best way for the OSS movement to gain access to mainstream arenas but honestly I would take it where i can get it and move on from there.

I think that the reason that we can't sue M$ for their software bugs (or any other software company for that matter) is because there are so many bugs and defects.

If they made better products with a small tiny chance of a bug (like a car their is a chance but it is so unlikley that it is worth selling it) then they would be held acountable but since their are so many . . . you get the idea.

Another point for thought is what happens when open software has bugs. I know it was posted above that "we are giving it for free and thier might be a chance of bugs" but still people will bring anyone they can to court. Should a college student who developed a patch with unforseen consequences and was accepted into some tree be liable? Maybe the person who accepted it should be liable? No niether one should be but it shows this isnt a black and white issue.

Their must be some way we can change something and tip the balance of power. We just have to find the right thing. This article does feel alot like a lament but things are not over yet, they are just alot more difficult
The most important part of fighting a battle like this is educating the masses. Making them aware of what the problem is and give them ways to stop it. The masses are not aware of the many security risks that M$ has - they figure everything is like that. There should be some sort of huge publicity campaign similar to The Truth.
