EXACTLY! How better to confirm that your vote really _did_ count. I've come to the same conclusion you did in thinking about this situation. If something looks funny - you can check it out, you can verify that everything is as it should be. Of course, the information needs to be online. Talk about a/. effect, the night of the election and the day after would be a hoot.
And while we're at it, let's go to instant runoff voting, and eliminate the public subsidies for private organizations - that is, party primaries.
I attempted to purchase something from OpenOSX, and never received anything. To their credit, they eventually refunded my money - but only after I resorted to vulgar screaming emails to whoever I could find. There certainly was nothing helpful on their site to address the problem.
Of course, now I'm glad I never got anything from them.
I remember a guy who had graduated from high school the year before me, and had gone to MIT. He wanted to experiment with vacuum chambers containing carbon (gaseous, I suppose), and a seed diamond. The idea was that it would act like a "supersaturated solution", so that lowering the temperature would cause the carbon to crystallize on the seed diamond.
Maybe it would have just produced pencil leads, but it sure sounds a lot like the CVD today.
Actually, they're both pretty damned annoying. I don't care whether it's a cell phone or not, I just don't want to be subjected to the obnoxious bellowing of arrogant, loudmouth, rude pinheads. STFU!
Huh? Why's everybody getting so worked up over this article? I've never read any of the books, but I found the article to be pretty funny. Kinda like Niven's (I think) essay on why Superman is a virgin. Relax, have a good laugh. It ain't that important.
Can anyone keep track of a series in which the whole season consists of 4 episodes? Good grief, as much as I like Farscape, I've about given up on it. Why can't they produce a decent number of episodes?
P.S. Please, kill the screamer, immediately. What an annoying character.
I plugged my Apple Pro keyboard - with the mouse - into my USB hub, which is plugged into my USB A/B switch. I press one button on my switch, and I'm using them on my Cube. I press another button, and I'm using them on my PC. Only problem is I can't seem to get right mouse button functionality at all. This is mitigated somewhat by the fact that I can use my PS-2 keyboard and mouse at the same time as the USB stuff. If I want to right-click, I grab the PS-2 mouse. If I want to mess with my BIOS, I use the PS-2 keyboard. Otherwise, I just flip the switch and go. I did this because two keyboards takes up too much space on my desk.
I didn't install any drivers, so it might work better if I did so.

While I have come to HATE SUVs, I think those who would burn down a dealership are responding in frustration. Consider that _every_ internal combustion engine is producing toxic fumes in the air, oil and gas running off into our waterways, noise, and the destruction of nature along with expensive road construction. SUVs, and all other vehicles, are damaging our property. Shouldn't they be liable for destroying our America?
So how about a fee for every gallon of gasoline (and diesel, and fuel oil, etc.) designed to compensate Americans for the damage they cause. Then, to be truly democratic, distribute the proceeds equally to every adult citizen. How much of a fee would be appropriate? Well, no amount is enough, but we're in a trap, aren't we? So how about we start at $1.00 a gallon and go from there. Those who do very little driving, or use highly efficient vehicles, or buy goods that didn't have to be trucked 3,000 miles, get back more than they put in. Those who drive SUVs, and act as heavy consumers, pay more. And industry has an incentive to reduce their consumption even more. And a monthly check emphasizes the relationship between "cheap" gas and the continued rape and murder of the landscape.
No need to burn down dealerships this way. Recognize the economic nature of clean air, healthy waterways, and vibrant forests and plains, and those dealerships will shrink dramatically. And, there'll be fewer people in small vehicles being crushed by the tankmobiles.
I've been looking into this, because the fan on my old box is really annoying me. The PC Power & Cooling power supplies (the quiet ones) run at 34 dB. However, QuietPC purports to reduce the sound level for the entire PC (using their power supply, plus things to muffle the disk noise), to 26 dB. That's a LOT quieter than 34 dB, and it's not that much more expensive, even with the outrageous cost of delivery.
When I build my new box, I'm going with QuietPC
I'll leave the water-cooled cases to the serious overclockers. I'd rather go to the source of the problem. Cyrix supposedly has a CPU that doesn't need a fan. If I can find it available anywhere, I'm building me a new machine with old-style hardware - Socket 370 with a "C3" running at 733.
Hey, that's more than twice what I'm using now, I'm not a big gamer, and it'll be QUIET! (Sorry. Didn't mean to yell).
Of course, if anyone has built (or found) such a machine, I'd be interested to know what your experience has been like.

.. as in hardware, that is. I looked at that site years ago, and it's pretty clear that they'll NEVER produce anything. I gave up long ago.

They wouldn't let him try it.

the perfect recipe for insanity.

I don't even use my CD burner anymore. I only ever used it for music, and all that just goes on my iPod now.

I don't know about Europeans, but this American got a good chuckle out of the "Move to Europe" comment.

Great idea. Think I'll buy an iPod at less than half the price, and do just that.
