Call me a paranoid shizofrenic alienophobic, but I damn won't give some pantsy-ass aliens my DNA.
If those alien dudes are smart, they'll send back sterile cloned Kenau Reeves or Leonardo DiCaprio lookalikes, and we all know what that'll lead to: no more reproduction.
I think no species in it's right mind should send the most intimate information about their genetic buildup into space, that's just too naief.

  7. International law revised? on Does Defamation Know Borders? · · Score: 1

I imagine these kind of cases will have interesting sequels that will redefine international law for times to come.
The big differances in national laws of different nations will make it virtually impossible for internet companies to stay on the safe side of law in all the countries where their pages might be viewed. With more and more of these lawsuits hitting persons, companies and even governments this is going to provide for some interesting legal battles.
The whole of internet is going to cause some interesting shifts in international law of which the French Anti-Nazi case and this new australian businessman case are just the first examples.

  9. It's a symptom, not a problem on What Do You Do To Relieve Lower Back Pain? · · Score: 1

Remember the back-ache isn't the real problem, but just a signal your body is sending you that you're doing something very wrong.
Pain is a really strong signal, and it's seldom the first one your body sends (except when you're in acute danger). Most chronic pain kinda problems begin with mild comfort, that gets ignored because 'well, I really wanna do this' or 'hey, it's my living' or another such reason. This eventually causes the problem to come to such a point that it can't be ignored anymore, and it'll force you to stop what you're doing wrong.
Anyhow, familiarize yourself with your body, take it seriously (it got to last you a long time) and find new ways of using it (heh, yes, in all ways possible ;-))
I do tai chi, which has equipped me with a kind of toolkit of exercises to solve nearly all discomforts, but there're plenty of alternative to that which'll do the same for you.

Just remember the pain is your body asking your attention.

  10. Real world on Is Technology Making Kids More Intelligent? · · Score: 2

I myself am a professional programmer, so I make long hours behind the computer. Programming requires a large amount of creativity and I think few would deny it to be an intellectual progress as well. I do find that after I've been programming for a long time, I get disconnected from the real world, to the point were I'm unable to tie my shoelaces, because I can't remember how. And that's if I'm lucky enough to actually recognize my shoes from all those other things that look a lot like shoes, but don't fit on my feet. It usually takes me one or two hours to get back to myself again. Point being, is that this kind of detachment from things down to earth is bad. It'll make your anti-social, unable to take care of yourself and generally unmotivated to do anything else than crawl behind the computer again. I imagine this goes for anybody who (over-)uses a computer now and again. It even goes for anybody I think that does long periods of very abstract thinking, like academians and such. It's this kind of behaviour, when people are detached from the world around them, that freaks out people, and makes them condemn computing all together. And they're right, if somewhat blunt. I think we should teach our children, and remember our friends, that a computer is a tool to get things done, and not a world in itself, not somewhere to retreat when the real world scares you, which it so often does when your a teen.
