Damn it.
You have to look REAL hard to find more stupid people than/. people. Yeah i know... Call me a troll. I don't give a shit.
You yell and you scream and you do all kinds of crap. And when all comes to all you don't even know fucking why.
People here talk about.Net as it was the same as passport etc. Those things has NOTHING to do with each other.
People wake the fuck up and live in this world, instead of you holy fucking linux bullshit all the crappy time..Net actually is a brilliant technology which could kick some major ass if implemented on the linux platform. You are just to stupid to see it.
Jesus christ./. the home of thousands of idiots
Well if you read what i wrote, you would see that if i or somebody else have a Word 2000, and want to exchange files with a user with Word 97, i just save the doc as a Word 97 file or as the lowest common fileformat which will work in most of them. Word 6, or all the way back to Word 1 for DOS(Which is viewable in 99,9% WP on the market).
And you example of HTML 4 is bad. If you utilize the features of HTML 4, then it won't display in Netscape 1. Not proberbly anyway, and then you have only accomplished to confuse the viewer because he or she sees something in a completetly wrong context becuase lots of info is missing.
Too wrong.
If you need to bash on MS, please do it with some hard facts. They have never broke anything in their fileformats. Whenever they release a new version they have often expanded upon a fileformat, but thats not only MS who does that.
Everybody does that, cuase it's needed to support the new features you put in applications, and i don't know about you but my MS Office can save and read all the old MS formats as well. All the way back to MS Word 1 for DOS and all kinds of more or less obscure formats as well.
So what do you complain about? You'r just bithcing about something you heard somewhere without knowing if it's true.
I guarantee you, that ANY MS WP fileformat you send me, i will be able to read with MS Office 2000.
And if you complain that it's the others who adopt an MS fileformat that then have to keep reverse engineering the new fileformat version, then you're right. But again, this is not just something which regards to MS. Whenever you adopt something other people develop, you have to keep up all the time. This happends with new versions of PDF, HTML, and all other formats which keep improving.
First they talk about how they can't comptete etc. But then they say that they will still continue to dveleop both desktop an dserver versions? Is it just me or is that just what they have been doing all along?
That menas that nothing has changed one bit. Everything is like it has always been. They will still develop new versions of both products, so whats the big deal?
It's fine that it can take up to 32000 frames pr. second, but it also needs to write thoose 32000 frames, and correct me if i'm wrong but a digicam today spends a few secs saving each frame....so if the camera needs to save the images anywhere it will only be able to take a picture or two each second..... Then the remaining 29998 won't do any good when they aren't saved...
And even if you could save them you still don't have a harddrive which can save 256 megabytes in a second.... NO harddrive in the world is so fast...Even flashmemory etc. arent that fast....
They claim that the SGI 1200 is faster than the Octanes. If thats the case then why spend $15,000 on a standard Intel server with alot of RAM. If they could see pass the pretty box the SGI 1200 comes in they could get a comparable box for $4000-6000 instead. Waayyy cheaper...
Anyways... I also want to see some physical evidence of the claim that the SGI 1200 is twice as fast...I've seen the octanes when they are working, and NO intel processor even comes close to what thoose Octanes can do... And then even claim it to be twice as fast...This can only be due to one thing... The fact that the oftware they use don't run on anything but Intel processors....
People seem to beleive that.net from MS is a new operatingsystem. It's not.
The new.NET framewrok has nothing to do with operatingsystems or anything else..NET is a development framework. This will result in new products such as Visual Studio.NET, which will feature C#, ASP+ etc. To build serverside applications and websites.
It's not a new windows. MS though has plans on offering Windows, Office and other apps, over the internet at some point, but this isn't going to happen in the next few years. And they will still be offering a bormal off the shelf version of Windows to install on your local machine. Anyway...They can't just send windows from the internet to you without you having installed an OS first, which has the capabillity of accessing the internet.
It's really anoying at times, how people on/. in their linux loving frenzy, just blurts out one comment after another without looking into the things they are talking about. I find this odd, since most of/. users are pretty knowledgeble people, who know a great deal about many things. But in their linux loving frenzy, they just don't look into the MS products before expressing themself which amounts to a bunch of unusable comments with little basis in facts.
.Net is NOT an OS, but a new development framework, which will bring a new version of ASP to the masses, called ASP+.
ASP+, has some VERY interesting new things, which (when released), will surpass ANY other webrelated langauge, being that PHP, Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk etc. It's actually a EXCELLENT product from MS.
Wrong.... Cube is a word from an english dictionary. You can not...I repeat.. NOT Trademark an normal used english word.... It's rather that Cobalts trademark is quite weak, as it looks VERY similar to a standardenglish word.
Normally 99% of/. complain about how lousy MS are etc.
But know people get all worked up over Evolution, like it's just the coolest new thing. And when it comes down to it, it is NOTHING more than a ripoff of MS Outlook... People come on.... It's DIRECT copy of Outlook and you just talk like it's soooo cool. Whats up with this?
And on top of that, it's even DAMN unstable... They are(in there own words) building it by using VERY unstable components, which again rely on very unstable components...If you ask me, and alot others...this is NOT the you normally develop an app.
Somebody...Please rank this up... It's very objective info... It really is a copy of an MS product which people constantly bash on. And on top of that it's poorly developed...
Wrong. Onlye fiels named.asp is parsed through the ASP engine. The thing MS improved is if you call your files.asp and only have plain html in them, they will run faster than before. But if they just call the files.htm then they will NOT go through the ASP engine.
first of all the thing you say about the UIN's are wrong. I got an UIN of 118xxx and i'm no developer at ICQ etc. And when thats said its a fake. The other day i recived a message from the same UIN which asked me to send them my password...comeon people think damnit..It's NOT against the law for a 13 year old to use ICQ.
I really think you should stop complaining about cable. You are fortunate to have 512KB+ cable access. Me and ALOT others only have access to a regular 33.6 or 64 Kbps line and don't even stand a chance of getting cable or similar. Any way..Cable IS considered a high-speed access, and well...it actually is pretty fast, so please stop complaining, when you don't have anything to complain about.
Don't remove any comments at all. First of all Microsoft, ain't gonna bully/. into doing censoring. Second, slashdot isn't responsible for what gets posted on this site, just like the phonecompany ain't responsible if people use the phone to talk about illegal things.
The only perons responsible are the people who posted the info in the first place. And thats the people who Microsoft should be going after, if they want to. But the fact is that htey don't know who it is, and know they try again to DAMEND that somebody does as Microsoft wants. But/......DONT DO IT.....
Keep the posts. As a sign of respect of/. users, the freedom og speech, and to show Microsoft, that they don't run the whole freakin world, and they have absoltely NO right to demand ANYTHING of/. or anybody else.

Why Not MySQL?

In this debate over which database is best, i find it shocking, that people don't got a clue, as to what this discussion is about.
People keep saying "xxx is better than yyy", and the hang on to that statement, more than they would hang on to there life, in the worst imaginable situation.
I have said it before, and i'll say it again. It's all about CHOICE. That we can CHOOSE to use xxx, or yyy or something else. It's about CHOOSING the right tool, for the job.
It's saying that MySQL is a good solution, to many of the jobs, but it's also saying that Oracle, will be betetr for SOME jobs, while Sybase, will be better for others, and again MySQL will be better for some problems etc.
In our world, i would have thought that people would have understodd, that xx is betetr than yy, dosn't exist. It's just a question about choosing the right tool for the job.
You wouldn't use a screwdriver, to dig a whole in you yard, would you? And, car x isn't better than car y. It's a matter of what needs the car is to cover. A Ferari isn't better than a Ford. Because it's 2 diferent cars, covering 2 different needs.
With that said, i belive the author of the "article" is far off, and dosn't quite know what he is talking about. He comes up, with some VERY far out examples, as to why different features are demanded. Also he talks, like it is the job of the RDBMS, to omplement security measures to prevent the whole serevr, form NOT going down, which just shows how little the author knows about the topic. It isn't the job of a RDBMS, to give DISK level security, thats what you would use RAID systems for. Also, he clearly dosn't understand what needs he have. As far as i have read, openACS, is a sort of messagebort, which in NO situations, would require Transactions, or high disk security. He could be using MySQL, just fine. He barks at MySQL, for not implementing different security measures, while those measures, are to be covered by other products hardware/software. I belive that anybody with just the smallest amount of knowledge in servers, will agree with me, when i say that a server, should in 99% of the cases, use some form of RAID. So if he's running a Dual 500 Mhz server, with Mirrored(or DUAL Mirror) RAID 1 disk system, then he can easily spill coffee in one of the harddrives, without causing the server to go down.
etc. I don't wanna waste more time, on this subject, because it's clear that the author, don't have the required knowledge, to justify he's barking at MySQL.
I very much belive that you should continue, maintaining a printed manual for your software. I'n todays hightech world, companies are constantly trying to lower productioncosts, but that rarely helps the consumers, since the company often maintains the same price. Just like i would suspect that the company mentioned here, will be charging the exact same thing for the software, whether or not a printed manual is included. When thats said i still belive that a manual should be included. Today a lot of things can fail, and what does it help to get some software and a manual on a CD, if you fore some reason can't read the CD or install the helpfiles, to read that you needed some special thing or whatever. And then again, people feel they get more for the meoney, when they get a nice fat printed manual(which is also the truth), and nothing beats the feeling of opening a box of software you just paid big $ for, and then pull out a great printed manual. Try to imagine, opening a box of software that you just paid $2000 for, to find out, that you paid this much money to get a cheesy CD-Rom? No wwho do you think, will be the happiest customer, and the one most likely to buy the next version of your software? So, include a printed manual.:)
While you're all talking about speed, accidents, gallons and stuff....think about this....
If it can go up in the air...people will NEVER wait in line to cross an "airrpad"...they'll just make it go highjer...and then you have thousands of people going up and down in the air....
Also...what about police??? What are they going to say when you are 200-500 feet above the ground?? "please step out of your car?"...i see somebody falling down here. And the police can't just go in front of a car to stop it if it's speeding.....it'll just turn quickly around, above or below??
But a great thing about theese vehicles could be to make them to an ambulance....just imagine the posibilities in that....if somebodu has a heart attack....an air ambulance could be there like in 1 minute instead of maybe 5-10-15 minutes....and the same for police vehicles and so on....
Alof of you guys just sit here and bitch to each others instead of remembering what Linux is all about... It's about choice... Like Redhat?? Use it...Like Debian ??? Use it... Like Hal911 ?? Use it.... Like all of them?? Use them all then...
