Although I hate their ui design, I've just been on an Oracle admin course ( learning tree, very good ) and I have to say the internal functionality is *rather* good. I've been writing software for 25 years yet I was still left thinking 'wow'.
IF you own a TV here, you have to pay a licence fee - about £120. If you dont pay, or if you move house and delay in getting your old licence changed (as I did), you will receive a visit from a licence inspector. At your doorstep, demanding to know why you dont have a licence. If you fail to let them in, they return shortly afterwards with a court order and a police man to get in. Waste of a police mans time, in my case, but i'll be dammed if I let some arrogant twit from the bbc in my door without giving him some agro.
s'pose I'd better go find those orginal Windows Disks then, for when MS come knocking at my door:o)
I feel like I'm in an elevator while reading a short, single column 'article' squashed between adverts, and even then the content contains such rubbish as
"The Walt Disney Co. (nyse: DIS - news - people ), where he now has a board seat via the acquisition of his Pixar (nasdaq: PIXR - news - people ) animation studio."
Come on people, lets stop linking to this rubbish.
"Industry sources have leaked that tomorrow, on the 30th Anniversary of Apple Computer, Steve Jobs will announce that the new intel-based Mac laptops will support dual-booting Windows XP and OS X 10.4."
I'm not a fan of physical violence as an entertainment sport (despite having done karate for 20 years) but this just has to be an exception. It's so Just it must be a lie:o)
Virus writers - not the script kiddies but the true originators - are *very* clever people. Dont under-estimate them. Their motives may be unclear but their intelligence, not.
Tied up in DRM, all this memory kicking around is going to cause problems.
"Where did I put that Elton John Album? On my IPod? No... On my mobile? No... On my works mobile? No... On my PC? No... On my IPAQ? No... oh bugger it, I'll just buy another electronic copy."
While developing a speed camera detector for a magazine article last year, I was caught out by the very camera I was trying to avoid, because I was watching the display, and my speed increased by 6mph while I was distracted.
Cost me almost as much as I made for the article:o)
>First, be aware that programmers probably don't have to study statistics and marketing studies in school like business majors do
Thats right. Thats sooo right. I mean, I needed higher level math to get into university, and then 3 years of advanced math to graduate in engineering.
I agree

>it might be a great place to work.
From the look of the user interface on several of their products, I'd day the designers hate working there.

Unix.
yep. I think I'll go back to bed until tomorrow.
Jeez,
What is it with Forbes?

Just tell them to f**k off. You only report to one person. Worry about what they think.

Nice story though, and thats all that counts.

That was the one!

laughed my socks of at it first time round
About someone who wrote a Zork styled system for configuring linux, here on slashdot many years ago. One of the comments that came back was this:
>Take SCSI
Cannot do that
>Take SCSI
SCSI did not budge
>Take SCSI
You got SCSI
screw.eu
god, the possibilities are endless.
Duh. Got a case of word blindness there :o(
All those french words end in eu.
Thats going to be a real Cadeau to some people.
Learn to program *what* exactly?
If it's writing pretty programs on the PC, then why not VB?
If it's to learn how to write software for embedded computers, then no, C would be better.
Personally, I'd say assembly language is the best. But thats probably just my age.
>He was talking about the merchant side of things
From his comment:
>>Maybe Google purchases will offer some protection without costing as much as paypal.
Don't think so mate.
>accept credit cards is because of the enormous amount of fraud that occurs
I wouldn't worry too much. You post on slashdot; you must be a little savvy. You just have to be careful which sites you use.
Buying porn from an xxx site? Yes, kiss your card details goodbye.
Buying some hardware from a new source? You'll check them out first.
It's the vast number of complete fools out there who have the problems.
I'm rather surprised too. I live in the uk and am making a fair statement about our 'EU Overlords' pathetic efficiency.
I wonder if South Korea will be as soft and in-effectual as the EU. Me thinks not.
>"In the garbage?" Yes.
:o)
Maybe Elton John was a bad example

Glad I stuck with LP's
