This drives me crazy. We have several mission-critical apps (via 3rd parties) that REQUIRE IE6 or, in some cases, IE7. It's frigging ridiculous, but there's not a lot we can do about it. (I work for a small company, 1 department uses a program that requires IE6 and IE6 alone. To change off it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's flat-out retarded, but we deal with it because we have to.
The problem is not that the "helpdesk" people are stupid, it's that in a lot of cases, the companies they do business with have "extremely important programs" that are used constantly that REQUIRE IE6 or IE7. I don't do helpdesk work, but I do help out from time to time in my small company. Everyone here just about uses FF for everything they can, and use IE when they absolutely have to.
User education is important. It's simple, just tell them "to be safe, do any non-work related surfing (let's be honest, there are times even the most dedicated employees will be going to a non-work related site) in FF and ONLY do work-related stuff in IE.
but also a waste of time in a lot of cases. Case in point, my in-laws, who go to the doctor if they stub their toes.
I'm only slightly exaggerating, any little thing and off they go. It's unreal. If they knew about this, I'm sure they'd have a lot more "afflictions" to get "treated" by these doctors.
John Wayne's not dead - he's frozen! And when we find a cure for cancer, we're gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off. You know why? You ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15 million times. That's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be.
Interesting, these comments. Either y'all are really jaded, or I've been really lucky. In my experience working at a few different companies, the "bad" employees made themselves known to mgmt and the other staff via their poor IT skills (and, in almost every single case, lack of desire to improve said skills) and usually, poor inter-personal skills.
They were lazy and looking to make a quick buck. When said buck got a lot harder to make, they moved on to the next "get rich quick" scheme. Of course, if they'd bothered to put any effort into their former job(s) at all, they would have been ok.
How many people went from paper millionaires to "LOL..wut?" during this time?
The only good thing about the.bomb was that it separated the wheat from the chaff, in that all the little monkeyboys who thought getting their MCSE meant $85k+/yr are no longer in the industry, for the most part.
Basically, after the.bomb, the only people left were the good ones.
to rephrase the mantra: if microsoft had these requirements on developing software for Windows operating systems, you'd be typing up a furious reply condemning "M$."
Actually, I wouldn't. See, I'm not a developer. I'm in the industry (security/networking) but in this instance, I'm considered a consumer. And the agreement that Apple has devs sign is good IMO, because of the "end user" protections that are in place.
People were expecting different? If so...sorry that your optimism was (once again) crushed like the dreams of a small child. Don't worry though, your salty little tears feed the vampiric politicians. So please...continue weeping.
I'm not sure what the uproar is about...if you agree to develop apps for Apple's devices, this is the agreement you sign. If you don't like it, don't make apps for Apple products.
Am I missing something? This has nothing at all to do with "My Rights Online"...IMNSHO.
Did you miss the part where I was indicating sarcasm?
And I have an iPhone, and I haven't tried to jail-break it. Once someone buys something, they're free (in my mind) to do whatever the hell they want to with it.
To sum up:
You're a good doggie, but you're barking up the wrong tree.
Neil Gaimon has some good stuff. I actually like most everything I've read by Jim Butcher. Most are light and easy reads, but he writes pretty well. Those are time-passers.
I am glad to see you posted what I was going to post, since I don't have mod points, I'll do the AOL thing.
I agree with this post.

For the most part, they get it.

Sad.
DAMN YOU! I had forgotten about tvtropes. Damnit damnit damnit damnit.
Also known as Tuesday.
to have added a third g to their name.
This will be a boon to the advertising "industry".
Those bastard spawn of ultimate evil.
It's not the thing, it's John Wayne:

Agreed. It's not the tv making them fat. It's the fat that makes them fat.

Go.com is home to things like ESPN.
Excellent rant...too bad it's misplaced. This device is for internet connectivity at the ISP level, not at the consumer level.

Yes, when I read stupid things like the summary, it makes me want to shit my pants. I love my Depends.

This is a far more difficult problem for a hacker to circumvent.
Well, if the asshole "hackers" weren't trying to circumvent it we wouldn't have this draconian crap would me? /tongue firmly planted in cheek.

Exactly. That's why I'm saying that. I dunno how many books I've started to read then just put down because they are just brutal.
Of course, one mans junk is another man's gem so whatever. :-)
Books. I am an avid reader of sci fi and fantasy, and man, most recommendations out there just BLOW.
But what about Bing?

Good to know that calling myself retarded is worthy of a troll mod. Good stuff, I feel a heightened sense of self-worth already. ;-P
Seriously, the language of the proposed bill was horrible. it isn't trolling to point that out, Mr Mod.
