I think the idea is that a person is more than the sum of his/her parts. If you took a human being, or a colony of bacteria of equal mass, which is the higher life form? They both are made of equal numbers of cells, but the human being is sentient, while bateria are not. Murder, as we usually thing of it, refers to destroying sentient life. A fetus is not sentient.
B) If everyone thought like you do, we would still have seperate-but-equal, India would still be under British control, and abortion would be illegal everywhere.
He doesn't seem to give any reason for the switch other than it would add "maturity" to the internet. What the hell is "maturity" and how is commercializing the internet going to make it so?
There isn't a single gene for intelligence, just like there is no single gene for your arm or your leg.
Gen-engineering for intelligence is a long, long, long way off. The best we can do now, or will be able to do anytime in the near future, is to find and (possibly) get rid of single gene defects.
In the movie Gattica, they explictely said it was illegal to descriminate, but that people did it anyway. They did it because once genetic testing because ubiqutious, it will be very easy to discretely get a sample and have it tested.
Remember this -- the Republicans are, first and foremost, the party of big buisness. Anything that helps out large cooperations, despite the cost to the little guy, is in line with their ideals. There's a very good reason the RIAA president is a republican.
Despite what Hollywood would have you believe, I really doubt that we could stop an asteroid large enough to do a lot of damage. Assuming that to be the case, wouldn't you want to it to be unexpected rather than knowing when it would happen. Would you really want to know the exact date and time of your death?
Consider all of the years that Bush I and II were in the White House. For each and every one of those years, you know how many net new jobs were created? None! After each year of them being president, fewer people were employed at the end of the year. Bush recovery my ass.
I was just writing a wikipedia page yesterday on Famous Experiments, and that's the one I added. I read that Galileo tried measuring the speed of light the same way they measured sound -- by having two people stand a large distance apart, and flash a latern (for light) or make a sound. Subtract out the handler delay (a known quantity dependant on the person), and divide by two to get the speed of the wave. This works rather well for sound, but never worked for light.
My local LUG invited a copyright lawyer from Widner last year to come in and talk about some tihng, and he covered this. He told us that copyright law protects not only the form but the basic plot as well. Were Shakespeare alive today, he would have a fairly good lawsuit against Disney for infringing on Hamlet.
...Taking an underpowered engine and put it on an oversized vehicle. You'd probably get there just as quickly if you walked, and it'd save a lot of the R&D cost.

That statement doesn't pass the laugh test.

Everyone I know is a derivative of at least two previously existing ones. So much for non-infringing source code.

You forget the overhead required to generate the payload - packing and unpacking all those DVDs would take a LONG time.
Smash Brothers Melee
If I could understand all the acronyms :)

...since when has Orrin Hatch been anything but extremist in *any* of his views?
That in addition to Rich Boucher in the house, there are some senators with a modicum of common sense.

Can you elaborate on those aspects? I'm genuinely interested in your informed opinion.
Are you sure you posted to the right site?
According to the Department of Labor, here were the unemployment rates for January of the following years:
...
1989: 5.4%
1990: 5.4%
1991: 6.4%
1992: 7.3%
1993: 7.3%
2001: 4.1%
2002: 5.6%
2003: 5.7%
Not a single year of decline. Period.

So I'm not the only person around here who knows what 120 days of Sodom are :)
Because not being able to chat with people you could chat with previously is a great sign of "continual enhancement"

I, for one, welcome our new Delaware overlords

Just read the article. "The RIAA's legal document does not even prevent RIAA members from suing."
If that doesn't flag their intentions clearly, I don't know what will.
But I *swear* I read that it said differently. Oh well, thanks for the info.
