    If I have a nosebleed and some of the blood cells get on my finger and I hold them up to look at, what am I looking at?

    Humans? They are human cells. But what does it mean to be a human life? Having living human cells? Having a human mind? I choose mind.

    In my opinion this is ethical as long as no human minds are destroyed. Then I become very opposed....

    Just because people in backward countries like Saudi Arabia have fewer rights than we do is no reason to stop demanding more rights.

    BTW, the Untouchables in India are given the same legal rights as everyone else. It's just that they're de facto untouchable.

    Or perhaps they assumed everyone already knows Perl....

    I think maybe the scope was a bit too big and they should have covered fewer subjects in greater detail.

    There are plenty of books and web sites that go into specific topics in as much detail as you could want, and often more. These books are good for giving a very broad overview of lots of things, and teaching you a little about everything and making it easy for you to get into more detail if you like from other sources.

    In other words, I like this series. :-)=-

    Right on all counts, but I still think that this would make some funny headlines, like "Scientists 'Are Paranoid Thrillseekers'"

    I was arguing about the degree of excitement. I think that most "Paranoid Thrillseekers" would probably get a little more excitement from a roller coaster.

    But really, things where there is a percieved element of risk are, for me, far more exciting than things that I know are perfectly safe. Sometimes they're too exciting for me...

    An excellent way to protest a stupid law is to disobey it. Take the US drug laws, for example. I think it's pretty safe to say that most drug users don't think that what they do should be illegal, and there are quite a few of them out there. Sooner or later, someone will notice that the War on Drugs is a war on ourselves, and stop it (hopefully).

    At least it will tell people that their law isn't working.

    I play chess, and I'm good at it, but I'm not a paranoid thrillseeker. I'll grant that chess does give me a feeling of being in a war of wits, and I enjoy seeing my opponent squirm when they fall into one of my traps, but it's not on a par of thrillingness with things like skiing, where you can get yourself hurt.

    This could make compression for a lot of things much better, when you don't mind the compression being lossy. Think of movie and picture files even more compressed than they are now. Then think of the reaction of the [MP,RI]AA!

    You are very right. If this becomes successful I predict some very imaginative games that will take advantage of the wireless architecture for some interesting ideas, like worldwide Pokemon, but cooler.

    And yes, I'd say that, for example, Galaga had a high fun to calculation ratio and that Zorklike and Roguelike games were really fun. They still are fun.

    A better algorithm will always beat out a bad algorithm written in a "faster" language on a faster computer.

    This is nitpicking, but have you tried comparing something written in fortran on an old PDP-something to something using a less efficient algorithm on an Athlon box in assembly?

    Point made, though.

    George Bush, quite prominantly, and probably Al Gore, less prominently, and a bunch of other politicians.

    But there some politicians who won't whore themselves to corporate interests, and usually they can be found in little third parties with little chance of becoming major parties. The Libertarian Party, for example (disclaimer: I'm a libertarian) probably has a vastly greater percentage of people who do the usual politician things.

    Remember: the world could and can be a lot better than it is. I hope it achieves that.

    I didn't say it was the real reason. Perhaps I just don't trust companies very much to risk angering the *AA just because they feel like being generous. It makes me wonder what they're up to. Typically big companies don't take financial risks because they feel morally justified.

    I'm not saying that the urge to do the right thing didn't come into their decision; it was probably a significant part. But now I feel more confidant in their willingness to go through with this.

    BTW, I've only read one book by Ayn Rand, and not one of those ~600-page whoppers like "The Fountainhead". And not recently, either.

    Thay need to play more tic-tac-toe. I programmed a version that is a particularly good example. You sometimes win, more often you lose because of some stupid oversight, and most of the time it's just a waste of time.

    A big problem is that many people never learn.

    I'm not a kernel coder, so I can't comment on the relative virtues of Linux vs. *BSD, but I can say this: I think Linux has more potential.

    What OS are coders flocking to? Linux. What OS is growing faster? Linux. What OS just got a new and better VM system? Linux. What OS has been around longer? *BSD, and that is their advantage: they are stable. But I'll be willing to bet that most of BSD sucked a long time ago.

    Linux is getting there. Happy kernel updating!

    If you'd like a great editor for programers that is cross-platform and still quite lightweight, try the Folding EDitor, FED.

    It has the Folding feature, making it great for coding. Trust me.

    I reckon that one use of BRICK on Jack Valenti would bring out the best in him, too!

    But I have an even better way of filtering out 100% of TV crap: Ethyl-Beryllium-Adenine-Y, better known as EBAY. One use of EBAY on you TV will even get you money!
