Whilst I agree with the vast majority of this article, the planet finder project should be given a much higher budget, study of the earth should have a much higher priority, I think the author leaves the Near Earth Object study a little low on the list, I would think this should be at least number 2 on the list of priorities, first save the Earth from itself the study of moisture is important so this is fine, second save the Earth from a huge chunk of rock eliminating mankind, from there on down yes cool study other object in our solar system, study possible locations for other life out there.
Additionally I am not sure about the moonbase, until we get a definitive answer on the question of if water exists on the moon I don't see the point in building a base there, really we should be putting a lot more focus on studying the moon, what rare minerals can we find, is there any water anywhere that can be used to fuel spacecraft travelling further than the moon. These questions can all be answered with probes and possibly robotic landers we should be putting more effort into studying in this way before we even consider sending people back let alone building a base there.
I am interested in the study of the universe, I am curious about development of galaxies and black holes but I am more interested in protecting our species from an extinction level event either from us damaging the planet or from an asteroid wiping us out. It seems like NASA is really just trying to get popular support here. For the unknowing masses building a moonbase would seen really impressive, having mankind walk on the moon again would be a great advertisment for NASA, "hey look guys we still got it". Given the set backs they have experienced in recent years I can kinda understand their reasoning to feel like they need the public behind them again, but I think a report saying we have found a way to save the Earth would be a lot better for their publicity than a report saying we have some guys bringing more rocks back from the moon.
It seems like ask has come a long way, the binoculars feature is actually really smooth, I was expecting a slow loading feature when I read the article but I was suprised.
One thing I am not so keen on is the adverts displayed at the top of the page, something you see all over the place now, but also at the bottom of the page, meaning, I had to view them twice, I imagine for the advertisers this is a major benefit but to me the user it is an annoyance to have to scroll further to view the next page of results.
Another minor annoyance when you make a search you can go to settings but then to get back to your results you have to click the back button or make a change and save the settings there is no cancel and the top links to images, news, shopping and more options disappear from the top.
Minor annoyances aside though it looks like ask.com has taken a page from the google book of search engines and come up with a reasonably fast (feels a little slower than google), minimalist site with nice features, hopefully they will get the recognition they deserve for a job well done.
They seem to have a really nice set up there, I would be curious about how their 'hybrid' NAS/SAN benchmarks, and see some comparisions against some of the big boy equipment like IBM sharks.
I stopped using hotmail years back mostly because their spam situation was insane I could create I new hotmail account and without signing up for anything of giving the address out anywhere within a week the address would have started to recieve spam. Their filters were terrible.
Has this situation changed? Have they improved their filtering methods?
When I originally left hotmail I went to yahoo since their spam filters seemed a lot more powerful (you could teach it what you thought was spam) however then yahoo started to charge for their better filtering service and the spam situation there become unmanagable.
What is the opinion of my fellow/.er's which free mail service provides the best spam filtering? I am really only interested in the mainline providers, gmail, yahoo, hotmail.
My current email solution is to host my own mail server from my home, however, I would like to start using a freemail service since I can't access my home mail server from work due to an overly restrictive firewall/proxy policy.
Thanks for the offer but we really want to have our own child, additionally due to the fact I am not a US Citizen and my wife is there is some difficulties with us adopting (we fully investigated it). That said after I have my citizenship we have been planning on adopting a second child.
Because as with everything like this, the actual act may not seem important but it sets up a precedence which can be quite worrying, once there is a cost associated with email from one place what is to other people and eventually the government from implimenting a charge?
I keep seeing articles about Diebold and suspicious activities, and local goverments are still buying their equipment, it will be really interesting to see the results of the black box tests.
It is rather easy to set up servers to run on nonstandard ports. I could see many people doing this as a way to bypass a "tax firewall" if it ever got that far.
Of course it is, however, lets face it does your grandmother know how to do this? How about the other 99% of the internet users that do not know how to do this? Yes there would be ways to circumvent this tax, there is ways to circumvent the telephone tax but the vast majority of the population wouldn't know how.
Step 4 is to combine all of these effects and introduce a second party at this point the vague information is that the second party is called Candy is often found hanging out on street corners.
If I send an email via some server in Poland over some random encrypted port, how are they to know
This is true but then there is always ways around this isn't there, if your ISP is required to tax you on all traffic on port 25 and they see traffic on this port they can automatically add the.5c email tax, they don't need to see the content of the mail they just need to know the communication took place.
Sounds to me like some scientist didn't feel like going into work one day and called in with "Hi boss I can't come in today I am researching the effects of staying in bed and comparing them to the effects of zero gravity", finally someone actually came up with a way to get a grant to just stay in bed......lucky bastard.
Why are aol worrying about spam we are living in a 'spam free world' now Bill Gates promised sheesh another example of AOL jumping on the bandwagon with to little to late.
Seriously though I really object to the idea of any system that requires any form of pay to use for email, it opens up a very worrying reality of email tax, lets face the US government started charging for the phone system to pay for WW1 whats next email tax to pay for the war in Iraq.
I for one would like to welcome our 2 year old audience, it is nice that children are taking an interesting in day to day events, even if they do have potty mouth!
Sadly there will always be governments looking to restrict the speech of its people, I wonder how long it will take for google to move in an support those efforts?
Dude, if you're in a company that uses Unix, you're the admin, and they don't let you use linux (or whatever else you deem appropriate) on your desktop you need to get out of that place like last week.
I am afraid it isn't as easy as that, we use AIX, HP-UX and Sun which are all (which the exception recently of Sun) propriatory systems, large companies like this take time to allow transition, additionally the company mail is based on Domino, which means Lotus notes and windows. As soon as IBM releases lotus notes for windows and I manage to find a reason to put linux on a P595 partition I should be able to finally convince them to allow linux on the desktop.
Seriously nice extension I am already enjoying the benefits. Now if you can just add a feature to ignore all comments by userX my life will be complete:p
That sounds pretty cool, I will go and download it right now, hmmm with all the extensions I am running my firefox is becoming bloatware:op time to remove a few I think.
Well I just did download it and this actually seems really useful for regular posters.

lol lol, hmmm $40,000 per processor / 2 for virtual processors $20,000 * 768 = $15,360,000 licence fee per chip, no wonder Larry isn't worried about the sales of oracle stagnating, as soon as people upgrade from their old duel core to these he beats billy boy in the billionaires list:op
Oh my God, 768 way processor!!! I almost had a fit when I saw suns http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2006-03/sunf lash.20060321.3.xml'>t1 processor I need to sit and catch my breath, this is a multithreader's wet dream. Hmmm I wonder how oracle will price running on this processor?
You didn't read my post correctly, I do not agree that they should be involved, they have their own agenda this much is obvious all I am saying is I will reserve judgement on their reasoning until I know what it is.
If they are joining to make themselves look like they are giving back to the community in the eyes of the EU cool, doesn't make them being their right but at least they are giving something, I still don't want them there but perhaps since they are there they can give something back.
If their reasoning is to throw spanners in the works at every turn then I still don't agree with them being there but at least I know they are just trying to fuck with things.
If their reasoning is to try and move M$ Office into the open standards a little more, well guess what I still don't want them there, but at least they are trying to move towards an open standard, for whatever agenda they have.
Regardless I don't agree with them being a part of this, but I can't critise their reason until I know what their reasons are. Unless you are one of those judgemental people that automatically makes assumptions about people and things without getting any real background.
Yes MS has a shitty background, can thay change? I doubt it but I will evaluate their reasons as they become clear to me.
Before you jump in and accuse me of being an MS lover, I don't use Microsoft products I am a Unix Sys Admin I only run linux and BSD in my home, they only time I ever use MS products is on my office desktop where I have no choice, and even there I have been trying to pursuade the powers that be to let me use linux.
So let me see I dont like MS I don't agree with them being a part of this organisation I don't use MS where I have a choice I actively advocate their competitors, I just can't critise their reasons until I know them. That kind of mindset is what holds back progress. You can make a judgement on something until you understand the reasons!

I have squirrelmail installed but our proxies block all dynamicdns websites, and my IP changes quit frequently.
