When they divvy up the 8 mil that goes to the people who actually were harmed it will break down to a miniscule sum. Noone will be getting a check for a thousand dollars.
Then they have to claim that little bit on their taxes and Uncle Sam takes a bite. So really by the time you would have filled out the paperwork and payed postage to mail in a claim you would have been losing money.
Settlement 15.5 Million Amount to consumers - 8.7 million the rest goes to lawyers!
Almost half- goes to lawyers the rest get split up between everyone who claims. So fill out your claim form and sit by the mail box waiting on your check for $1.00. But don't lose the check stub! You've got to pay taxes on that money next April.
This kind of crap just burns me up. AOL throws 15 mil at a problem (I guess they skip sending free CD tins for like a day)- a few lawyers make a killing and everybody else gets jack.
Real victory for the consumer here. And did the lawyer balk at settling? Of course not- they just hit the powerball and won 7 million.
of more concern to me is this system give someone a motive to remove your finger. I like my fingers.
of course someone willing to cut fingers off will probably find that killing someone is the best way to shut them up so that you have time to go use the finger.
I do not like the idea of my digits being used for any kind of 'key'.
A ton of people are posting that this - combined w/a pin is super secure.
I've got one question.
How long do you think you will last when that guy cutting off your finger is yelling at you to tell him the pin?
I'm guessing for the average joe it will be measured in seconds. (Especially as the media and powers that be preach this constant message of 'just hand over whatever they want - don't fight back')
Women in particular appreciate SecureTouch, he said, because they don't have to bring in their purses
Yes - leave those purses out in the car so the guy stealing your stereo can get your credit cards too.
Kroger customer Mary Smith said she has a daughter in Katy who wants nothing to do with the finger image method of payment. She told her mother that it is "a way to get into your identity." It's funny, Smith said, "you'd think it would be the old fart who'd be afraid."
This is funny because she doesn't appear to realize that her daughters fear is based on having more knowledge about technology and is justified fear. She is thinking "I'm not old- I'm cool and cutting edge." and that vanity is letting her opt in to a system where one day her checking account will be cleaned out by a bunch of tweakers who got her fingerprints off her car door and bought all the sudafed they could carry. Smart enough to build a meth lab - smart enough to make gelatin fingers.
. If the ad rates drop and TV quality follow suit,
Yeah, that's not a long drop (t.v. quality). I know watching the most eligible bachelors in Alaska compete for a bride is riveting t.v. but I admit I am not too enamoured by what is offered up by the networks.
I wish they would go to a pay format because then I would stop watching altogether and have more productive time in my day. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Please help me by making television too expensive.
they will be able to push this thing through. Can you imagine the repercussions? Every time you think someone is using a product in a way that is illegal you require the manufacturer to track what people do w/that product.
Liquor companies should start tracking what happens w/their product.
Automotive manufacturers the same, and well anybody who pretty much makes anything. Yes, very smart.
Common sense is such a misnomer as it is really not common at all.
I'm a little puzzled as to why the article made the front page myself. Maybe to start up a big debate on whether or not security is important. There is a pretty large 'Security Sucks' lobby.
But look at some other posts in the thread and trust me when I tell you that to many this article will be a wake up call. To others it will be like a fried egg on teflon- it will just slide right on by.
This was an interesting read and I'm sure it is good info for tech managers- maybe if we keep hammering at them they will get it, but if you write code and you realize that we are connecting systems deeper and deeper - security becomes more and more of an issue. That seems to be a bit of a no brainer.
And all this talk of the computer is the network, and the future of tech and all this stuff - security is the linch pin to making it viable.
I think stability runs a very close second- especially as more critical systems become a part of this big electronic gestalt everyone dreams of- but if it is insecure, I know I wouldn't touch it w/a 10 ft. pole.
When will someone get a clue and put a stop to this type of digital extortion?
October 4th 2012. I saw it in a dream. Seems far away but actually it's not too bad.
The laws will finally be changed when all government building face the possibility of paying me license fees for my patent on buildings that take into account the effect of my patented "Gravity Effect"
Both Chambers and Tchuruk stressed that these networks must have carrier-class reliability, quality of service, and bulletproof security to succeed with enterprise customers and consumers. emphasis mine
Security will be the largest issue to everything that he is talking about. It is not a problem that can ever be 'solved.' But right now they are not even far enough along in the process to make this at all attractive to anyone w/concerns in regards to keeping data secure.
Yeah but will it be cheaper if it breaks every couple of days or every time you hit a decent sized pot hole?
I'm no ceramics expert so I would love to hear about what is going on regards to finding good ceramics applications and how they are getting around how brittle the stuff is. (I'm not sure if that's the right word but it breaks easily)
The space shuttle uses those ceramic tiles but they have to constantly be replaced.
And last but not least - current automobile engines are cooled by fluid and the fluid is cooled by the radiator. I have doubts as to whether ceramics are efficient enough that the cooling could be done w/out a fluid that moves around in the block, etc.
Mostly I'm just curious and these are some of the thoughts your post evoked in my mind.
tends to cook my legs very well now. If it were able to conduct heat any more efficiently I believe it would become too painful to use. On the other hand that kind of thing could lead to a lawsuit that would get me out of the daily grind and into the life of luxury I deserve.
Ceramics are cool - I love ceramic knives but they are so easy to break.
Water cooled laptops would make for 'funny' commercials with guys crawling over sand dunes gasping "water!, water!" and then pouring it into their computers. I could be a marketing genius.
I started this morning at 47 - made 2 posts to this thread and you should see it going up and down, up and down. It's been a couple hours and I'm at 46 right now. But that's only because all the points that would have pushed me over 50 are wasted.
Karma is kind of a game. It is not in any like respect or earned.
I've never been called a 'snot-nosed trust-fund Communist' before. Made for the best laugh of my day.
Since you don't know jack about the people who post on/. it is usually a good idea to refrain from attacking their person. Go after the ideas, the statements, but not the person.
Ooooo - the HP Way started silicon valley. Is that praise of them or a judgement of guilt?
Your arrogance keeps you from thinking rationally or being able to put together any kind of decent argument.
'Asswipe' - yep, I've been called that before. It's funny that you use it in the same sentence as the word 'respect'.
You prove my point - the company did something in the past and does nothing now. This is how it has been and will be. Has anyone died as a result of the merger? No? Does the merger and the end of the 'HP way' have any major impact on society, culture or history? Nope.
Then it is just not that big of a deal. Get over it.
I'm getting a lot of flack for my 2 posts - I really did expect to get modded down as you suggest and I'm kind of surprised I haven't been yet. But what is funny is that most people are flaming me as ACs and have very little of substance to say. This leads me to feel that I am correct in my opinion. Thanks for the confirmation whoever you are.
If you think a corporate merger and the death of a human being are of equal significance you are sadly mistaken as to the nature of the universe. Your sense of priorities is not just wrong it is bent.
BUT - when they do die, if I am still alive, I will be upset but I will also completely understand as it is a part of the reality that we live in. Sadly our culture does not handle death very well. But I refuse to view the 'death' of a corporate culture as being on par with the end of a human life.
All I'm saying is companies (good and bad) come and go.
Invest in things w/more longevity than a corporate enterprise - and don't act surprised when they end.
If he really thought HP would last 'forever' he is not too bright or has a serious lack of historical knowledge.
When people invest their lives in a company - they are investing it in the wrong place. Sure you need a job and you should provide honest work in return for honest pay. I do it everyday. But my job is not my identity and it is not my life. If my current employer tanks- I will move on.
or to sum it up in an even simpler way (but once most people read this they will pigeon hole me (somewhat ironic) and not listen to anything I have to say)
"The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word of the Lord stands forever"
Right. Just like Martin Luther - changing the course of history and having an immeasurable impact on the worl we live in today.
Oops. It's not like that at all. It's this rich kid who's bummed because his dad sold out but wanted to retain control. Look at what he says,
"The HP Way also touched many people's lives. Most of us expected that it would last forever -- that it would prove as timeless as a Frank Capra movie. But those entrusted with the duty to safeguard it have exercised their legal right to make another choice. Dura lex, sed lex. The law is harsh, but it is the law. "
The HP Way would last forever? What kind of delusional ego trip were these people on.
Just what kind of religion was this HP Way? Apparently one that worships in old movie theaters.
This whole thing reaks of much of what is wrong with this country.
while I don't shed a tear for the end of the "HP Way". What a bunch of rubbish.
Want to get sentimental or emotionally involved in something? Want to invest time, money and personal effort in something?
There are a ton of needs that are of much greater importance than any theater or corporate entity. I know - feel said for many multimillionares who don't see all their dreams realized as much as the next guy. But give me a break.
Comapanies, countries, societys come and go. Deal with it.
Don't worry you didn't lose anything.

the other reply isn't from me by the way. I don't post AC.
don't get so hyped up. I didn't expect to get modded up so much - I thought I was being funny and 1 or 2 of my mod points did come that way.
Well so that's all I have to say. I probably wouldn't have replied but I didn't want you thinking I posted the other thing.

Should have read this first. This article should be moderated -1 Flamebait.
