I've tried searching all kinds of likely options in the users to find the original account I first created. No joy. Switching would be a lot of work anyway - I'd want to bring all my journal entries over. I wonder if the winner of this option can just get their uid changed on their current account.

I'm not saying the bloggers will be in control. They may be able to motivate people to take control. I do think they can have a lot of influence. Sure there are varying opinions, but it seems to me this idea is about trying to get on the same general page.

It's easy to forget how young this medium is, and I think it has the potential to become huge. Mocking it now and saying there is no point is ignoring what may come down the road. It reminds me of the people who say we shouldn't recycle because it isn't cost effective. But it wont become cost effective unless we work on it now.

Blogs may not have a huge impact yet, but that's not to say they wont and this may be a part of what runs up to that.

most blogs are day journals and have very low readership - but there are a number of blogs that directly impact the thinking and actions of thousands of readers. in aggregate there are millions influenced - and if those millions act in a coordinated fashion, they become the ones in control.

There are plenty of self study guides that one can purchase.

Another option, if it fits into a persons schedule, would be to take classes through a community college. Costs are lower, classes are generally smaller than a university and schedules are often flexible for working adults.

Another thought I had is home schooling materials. I've never personally been involved in homeschooling, but as I understand it these kids can earn a highschool diploma at home. So why couldn't someone put themselves through such a program just to learn the information? I'm sure there are lots of resources out there for this, a quick google turned up this one.

There isn't a blog on the web that can't be picked apart. The site reflects a lot of who we are so I consider it to be effective. If people don't like who I am, there isn't a lot I can do about that. As I understand your list it says my site doesn't look 'cool' and is bad because I'm a Christian and an American.

I guess I could look for another theme and picture - might not be a bad idea anyway. But it will still be a wordpress theme and wont look like a site that somebody put a lot of time and money into it. As for where I live and what I believe - well I don't think I'll be switching those in search of 'nerd cred'.

Or maybe it is a good humored jab and I should be laughing along. Just not enough to go on. But I'll go the laugh along route because I like to assume the best rather than the worst from people.

I think so as well. Sure there is some crud, but there was real bad writing out there before the internet too. The volume of both has gone up and I guess the reader has some more work to do filtering it, but I don't mind. I'd rather be the one doing the filtering than a handful of big publishing houses.

And it's not like it's all bad for the pros. My favorite new author right now (new to me) is John Scalzi. I found about him because Amazon recommended Old Man's War to me. I've found a lot more about him and other authors that he thinks are good through his blogs.

the internet is just new technology that will help in some ways and hurt in other ways. me, i'm not concerned about this dinky little group. my concern is - how has it impacted the reader. there have always been many more of us than the writers. have we been benefited by the internet? i think so.
