  1. This camera is NOT meant for hobbyists! on Nikon D2H: Digital Camera + 802.11b Option · · Score: 1

This is meant to be a camera for serious PJs (Photojournalists). It will list for over $3000 and is meant to compete with the Canon 1D which also lists for over $3000. This camera shoots 9 fps at 4MP. Speed is the word with PJs.

Below is more on digital cameras in general...slightly off topic but I saw a lot of confusion and opinions on here by people that don't know what they're talking about when it comes to digital cameras...especially those beyond P&S digicams.

I have a Canon 10D which is 3fps at 6MP and it costs about $1300 (sans lens). Why is it so much less than the 1D or the D2H? Simple, it doesn't focus as fast as the 1D, it doesn't do 9fps and it is completely weatherproofed (all of the seals on the 1D are completely weather proofed against sand, water, etc.). In addition, the 1D has a built in vertical handle and is built like the proverbial tank.

I just don't need the features of the Canon 1D to justify its price.

Why go with a DSLR over a P&S digicam? Simple..available choices in lenses. There is NO way you can get control of your depth of field in a digicam with the puny lenses and sensors they ship with. Period. Add in chromatic aberrations and vignetting you'll see the shortcomings. That being said, if all you take pictures of is family, friends, and other subjects like that then a digicam is probably right for you. I have one of those too since my camera body and lens setup weighs in at about 10 lbs. + bag and extra batteries. I don't want to take it everywhere.

Nikon is behind the times in most cases and the WiFi is an add-on module that sucks power out of the camera's main body. I really don't see it converting Canon using PJ's over to Nikon because Canon has the lenses that PJ's lust over and the body is only a very small investment in their professional setup. A 600mm f4 lens costs $6000. That's right. 1 lens!

Olympus has gone in the 4/3 direction which I think most of you will like until you see the cost of their first 4/3 DSLR camera and their lenses. Ouch!!

I just built (like 3 weeks ago) a box with the following:

Soyo Dragon Ultra MB (10/100,Audio,IDE RAID)
    Athlon 2000 XP+
    512MB 2700 DDR (1 stick)
    2 - 80 GB Western Digital 7200 RPM 8MB cache
    (striped for sweet performance)
    128 MB MSI GeForce3 Ti200 w/128MB and DVI/TV Out
Antec black tower (sweet case) w/ 400 Watt PS
    Microsoft keyboard/mouse
    ADS Pyro 1394DV
    LiteOn 40X/12X/48X CDRW
    25 32x CDRW cakebox

All of this shipped including tax was right around $1300. Just amazing.

I got it all about 3 days after ordering (basically 'cause I live about 30 miles away..2 days to process everything, 1 day in transport)

  4. Try AOP (Aspect Oriented Programming) on Designing Multiplayer Game Engines? · · Score: 5, Interesting

AOP might be a great way to handle the problem of dealing with the update issue. You can program as though they are on the same box and code your aspects to deal with what to send and when. It's not an easy thing to learn (think when you went from procedural to OOP) but it can pay huge dividends.

I use AspectJ (www.aspectj.org) but that's for Java...I don't know of any AOP toolkits available for C# since it's such a new language.

    Good luck.

They get you either way. They either get their money from telemarketers for phone number lists or they get it from you to actually pay THEM so no one will call you.

    It's a great racket on PacBell's part.

I generally don't answer calls from "unavailable" unless I'm in a ripe mood.

DirecTV doesn't carry UPN at all! Luckily the cable feed coming into my house still works or I'd have to find another way to watch it.

Come on DirecTV get it in gear and negotiate to carry UPN!! I like 7 days as well so I'd like to see it for other reasons too.

  7. Re:Why shouldn't they? on Municipal Networks as Alternative to Commercial Broadband? · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Local muncipalities are different than the "US Gov't". The people directing the build out live in the area and hence have a much more vested interest in the venture succeeding and being on schedule (well, within reason of course).

Does your local government tell you what you can and can't do with your electricity? Or what you can talk about on your phone (okay, the phone isn't a local utility but same difference in my book)? If they just provide the network, and someone else provides your ISP services/bandwidth, etc. then they are the ones responsible for your content, not the local government.

And BTW, it's not just the "far Right" that would want content filtered. the "far Left" would want hate content filtered and other topics that didn't push tolerance of others. (Offtopic: Isn't it amazing how many of those touching tolerance of everything are generally intolerant of people that aren't intolerant themselves?)

Just think, if we didn't have all these viruses running around making sure we secure our systems then someday when we invade another planet of inferior beings, one of their cable system operators could write a computer virus that would infect our systems and shut down our shields and then where would we be?? Therefore, we need a lot of these viruses so that when we do go attack other planets we won't be defeated. It's pretty simple I think.
